The Famous and Best Chicken Wings in Kuala Lumpur

What a bold claim! Famous, yes for Restaurant Wong Ah Wah (WAW) at the corner of Jalan Alor, Bukit Bintang is a Kuala Lumpur institution, having been around for 30 years!

WAW started as a humble stall serving chicken wings grilled over charcoal to hungry party-goers. Today they impressively occupy 5 shop lots serving their signature chicken wings, grilled fish and other Chinese restaurant fares.

But the best? Yes yes yes and I standby my claim! I’ve been in Kuala Lumpur for a while now, I have eaten a lot of chicken wings, and I say that Wong Ah Wah’s chicken wings’ fame is well-deserved!

What makes good grilled/ BBQ/ roasted chicken wings? First the marination. WAW chicken wings are marinated overnight with soy sauce, honey, white pepper, garlic, ginger and spring onion.

Next, the grilling. To get the desired smoky flavour, let the charcoal smoke permeate the wings prior to flame grilling. During grilling, regularly baste the wings for that extra depth in flavour.

The result? Fragrant, smoky, tender, juicy chicken wings with a slight burnt crisp in the skin. Savoury not sweet, it’s BBQ wing-gasm in your mouth.

The folks at WAW got the recipe right – even after so many years, the taste and quality remain consistently satisfying. I feel that it’s as delicious as my first taste 10 years ago! Dip your chicken wings with a bit of the sweet spicy Hainanese chili sauce, mmmm… your evening just ended on a high note!

Of course the price for WAW chicken wings has increased, but so has everything else in life. The last I checked, it is RM2.70 per piece with a minimum order of 2 pieces. It gets very slightly cheaper with the more you order, but the pricing table is so complicated that no one bothers.

WAW Jalan Alor - grilled stingray

Another thing I like to eat at WAW is the grilled stingray. Crispy skin with a hint of turmeric, you eat the fish plain with the accompanying chilli sauce. They get their fish really fresh so the flesh is thick and juicy.

That’s pretty much what I eat at WAW, everything else contains too much MSG for my liking. If you want a less-MSG dinner, the Thai place opposite WAW is highly recommended.

You know what? You need some Wong Ah Wah chicken wings right now! How about tonight? Let’s go!!!
