ryan and the rose apples

We have a blossoming rose apple (aka jambu air) tree back home in Batu Pahat. My mom ‘feeds’ it with organic fertiliser (skins of papaya, carrots, whatever she’d saved while preparing meals) and my dad ties a lot of plastic bags around the growing fruits. I have no idea what that does; probably to stop random strays from attacking the lovely red babies.

Anyway I love the tree, as the fruits are always bountiful, crunchy and sweetly delicious. When we got home last Saturday, my dad went out to the small garden out front and harvested a whole basketful of ripe rose apples for us. I love my parents too 😀

Of course when Ryan wanted to eat one, I made him work for it.

Ryan itching to bite into a rose apple
Me: “Open your mouth big big, then go near the fruits ar boy…”

Ryan eating a rose apple
Ryan: “Why my auntie asks me to do all these stupid things one…”

  1. Ryan so cuteeeeeeee

And those jambus are the awesome. Except at my house, always have to douse the fruits with water first because the ants love the fruits as much as we do…

  2. wooo i never knew it’s called rose apples!

    HELLO RYAN!

  3. Those goes well with the “cicah” or as the East Coast folks say “collek” (do not confuse it with coli ok?). You can buy ready made collek or prepare it yourself using belacan, gula melaka, salt and water.
BTW, I heard that Andre the Giant is going to do some bodily harm to your Toro lover.

  4. I know with bananas the reason for putting plastic bags around the fruit is to help ripen them. Maybe the bags are to keep pests off them.
Have you tried ASKING your dad why he puts plastic bags around the fruit?

  5. ShaolinTiger says

    Jambu air ftw!

BTW I thought the English name was ‘Wax Apple’?

  6. How about “Water Apple” or “Juicy Apple” ?
    😛

  7. I agree with Sotong. When I was on the Fruit Farm tour in Penang they told me they are called Water Apples.

  8. lol You wont believe this. I decided to go looking for a nursery which sells rambutan trees in Australia and the first page I got was this:

    • Dear Suanie,

Can u ask ur dad for the advise? My jambu air fruit all drop after the small fruit just developed. What could be the reason? I did water the plant everyday. Pls help. Thks very much.

  10. haha yes the jambu air from your mom is soooooo good. when i was home, my mom told me “i have a treat for you today…” before taking it out. then when i was ooh-ahhing over it, she said, “but sorry not much left. we finished most of it yesterday.” 🙁

  11. I know them as bell fruit. They’re nice, but no good for making smoothies.

  12. Cos this auntie like to pimp the nephew on her blog. Haha… My favourite. I always stop by the rest stop at Tapah to buy the Jambu air.

  13. wan2: hehe we had some during cny also right 😀

julian: some fruits are meant to be consumed in their natural form!!

eiling: haha and he’s ever so willing 😉 i don’t buy jambu air outside … i’d buy manggis at the pagoh rest stop

  14. those rose apples look sooo good. the last time we ever had this fresh from the tree was the cheaper pale pink version. not so sweet. these are AWESOME.

the plastic bags are there to prevent those insects from injecting their eggs into the fruits. We used to wrap guava/starfruit and various other fruits in the garden just for this purpose.

  15. Now only I know that jambu air is called rose apple in English.

  16. HELLO RYAN! GIVE AUNTIE FA A HUG!

  17. ahseng: oh i know about the pale version. if not naturally sweet, then waste of stomach space. Re: plastic bag… as, soo desu ka…

    simon: many names for it

FA: he kissed you too 😛

  18. Big Boys Oven says
