round and round the mulberry bush

Rather than being angry about the recent fuel price hike, I decided to channel my feelings and energy to scanning some stuff instead. Turns out, I only managed to scan about 4 items before I got massively bored of having to wait for the scanner to scan, then photoshop to edit and enhance. So maybe I wasn’t so angry after all.

First up — my colleague’s girlfriend bought a copy of Majalah Remaja (May edition) and told my colleague that I was in it. As this was the same couple who claimed they spotted me and ShaolinTiger on a food/ eating programme on 8TV giving our recommendations (or something, which I have no recollection of so it most likely was not us), I was not so inclined to believe him. But he passed me the magazine the next day, and true enough…

Sure, it only occupied 1/4 of the page. But it’s the first time I am on a Malay-language zine! Tra la la la la la.

(For those not in the know, click here to read about the Nokia Wireless Adventure II, then be ashamed of yourselves for not reading my blog every single day, even if I don’t update. I mean, what other counter-productive things could you be doing?!?)

A cat got itself stuck between a tree and a fence at my home then proceeded to die.

A friend’s uncle, Adnan Osman who is 65 years old is on a 9,000 km cycling trip from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing (hopefully in time to make it to the Olympics and support the Malaysian contingent there!). I am in extreme awe, shame and embarrassment because the last time I was on a bicycle, I managed to make it to the nearest pasar malam, bought tonnes of delicious food home and had a massive pig out after which I fell asleep because I was too full and fat. And that was 8 years ago, so I imagine I wouldn’t be able to cycle past my front gate now.

In any case, the most admirable Adnan Osman’s blog is here: oadnanxtreme.blogspot.com so you might want to head over there and show some love.

Eyeris has a new blog for music that he likes, which means it’s a pretty good blog and one that I’ve added to my blogroll. Already I’ve listened to Coldplay’s Viva La Vida, which I would never have heard otherwise because: 1) I don’t listen to radio stations where they play new songs (then have them on rotation till death), and 2) I get less inclined to try new things as I age. It’s a pretty nice song so I’m happy to hear it and I might get the album.

Here are the other 3 items that I scanned from my grandfather’s personal stash:

Grandfather - Sri Gading Electric Company
Click on the photo above for a larger version

A receipt from payment to the Sri Gading Electric Company in 1963. I think another one stated ‘2 lamps’ or something, so I am not sure how it was calculated. Need to ask my mom more on this. I think the Sri Gading Electric Company was bought over by TNB (or what TNB was called back then). But I would so love to know how they operated… All my life I’ve known only one IPP, so it would be interesting to know how it all worked.

Grandfather - bicycle registration card

A bicycle registration card! If you’d see the larger version, does it say registered in 1985 or 1937? Can’t be the latter… right?? Anyway I don’t know which bicycle was this. I know that my grandfather has a big black bicycle though (will include the brand here when I find it out). Growing up, I was both scared and fascinated by the bicycle. Then at the age of 11 or 12, I finally mustered up enough courage to ride it. And fell in love with it, and always tried to take it out, risking my grandfather’s (gentle) wrath because he wanted to go out and couldn’t because I stole his bicycle hahahahah!

Grandfather - aliens ordinance?

Aliens Ordinance, Certificate of Admission in 1951. My grandfather was 28 at the time of this certificate, and I’m not sure why they put his country of birth as ‘undetermined’ padahal he was born in this country. Oh well, no evidence, kan? Well, times have changed. If anyone would call me an alien in my own country now, I’d sue them.

There are a lot of other interesting stuff in his stash — marriage certificate (which is a red colour rolled-up piece of paper like what you see in Chinese period dramas), good citizenship cert, letters from China (which I think I have permission to have it translated — obviously I can’t read Chinese), assorted this and that. There’s also his life story that I think I want to document, but it’s a bit hard because I am not in Batu Pahat and I don’t go back often these days. Will need my mom for this project, need to think of a way to entice her and make her very interested to spend hours interviewing her dad on tape 😉

Mom, are you reading this? 😀

See how lah. By the way this is the same grandfather who has a road named after him 😉

  1. i think that bicycle registration’s from ’37.. not ’85..

I mean, if it was ’85, that thing would’ve been in BM and well, i don’t think cycling was the major form of transportation then… was it? LOL.. I have my bets on ’37 though solely based on the fact that it’s in English and not malay.

Well, how old’s ur granddad? it might make more sense that way.

  2. wah i’m so proud of my first wife and her granddada 🙂

  3. TNB was LLN (Lembaga Letrik Negara) then I think. And I don’t remember ever having to register any of my bicycles in the 80’s.

  4. I’m so proud to know chris tock who is proud of his first wife and her granddada

of course I’m also proud that my name is included in the paper as well!

  5. The bike was registered to a malay gentleman, Harmain in 1937 when grandpa was 13. He must have bought it later before he married grandma. The bike was a big deal in Sri Gading because it was a Raleigh, the most femes bike then.

Grandpa’s brother even better – he bought a big bike and was quite the playboy in the kampung then….

  6. I’m sure you could cycle to Beijing as well. Just take you a lot longer than your friends Uncle. 🙂

  7. femesness runs in ur family i thinks. :p
