Authentic nasi beriani Johor at Pak Anjang, Seksyen 13 (Shah Alam)

Beriani, bariani, baryani, biryani, biriani, briyani … Spell it however you want but do not claim that it’s the famous Johor beriani if it tastes nothing like it.

I should know; I hail from Johor and we know our beriani.

So it is with great pleasure that I share with you my favouritest discovery of 2012: authentic Johor beriani in… Shah Alam!

Thank you thank you thank you Pak Anjang for satisfying my thirst for good Malay beriani

My colleague took us here for their rempeyek and mentioned that they serve good nasi beriani. When we finally had the chance to try it out, oh boy I almost wanted to hug and kiss him for this discovery!

So good, so fragrant, so tasty, so delicious, so authentic Johorean! Behold the Nasi Beriani Gam Ayam (RM12), served with dhal curry, pickled cucumber and chilli.

In true Johorean beriani-style, the colourful long-grained rice is immersed and cooked with assorted spices; not overly powering but the fragrance of the rice definitely whets the appetite. Nasi beriani gam means that the meats are cooked with the rice, whereas for normal nasi beriani the rice and meats are cooked separately. Like this:

Besides ayam (chicken), they have nasi beryani daging (beef) and kambing (mutton), naturally priced a couple ringgit higher than the chicken version.

They serve tauhu bakar (crispy fried tofu stuffed with cucumber and beansprouts, served with crushed peanuts and sweet spicy sauce) for RM4.50. Delicious!

If you want to know what real Johorean beriani tastes like, do check them out before (if ever) they’re overly franchised and lose that magic authentic touch 😉
