tgif for food and fun

TGIF food
Clockwise: Chicken wings in garlic and chilli lemon-ish sauce, Jack Daniels chicken, chocolate fudge cake, ultimate long island.

TGIF fun
Clockwise: Carol the joker, Fireangel the joker, Carol and Fireangel the jokers, KY the joker.

TGIF at Seksyen 14 has great customer service. The floor manager albeit a bit Chef Wan-like, was friendly and helpful. A far cry from the manager at Bangsar’s Chili’s. The customer may not be always right, but as a manager you could do much much better instead of indignantly insisting that Chili’s policies have always been such and every other Chili’s branch in KL/PJ is wrong.

We are not unreasonable people. But if it is true that Chili’s policy is that a vodka orange and a screwdriver are different entities, then I have to say that they definitely know a lot more than the rest of us minions.

I still have the bill to remind me of the most ridiculously hillarious incident that happened to me this year (not in a good way), maybe I should frame it.

the best part of ramadhan

From BBC’s An Idiot’s Guide to Ramadhan:

The reason Muslims fast is to discipline their body and mind. The absence of food and drink and other pleasures provides a perfect opportunity to concentrate on prayer and worship. Not having the luxuries of life to hand makes it easier to reflect on life and be grateful for what we do have. Muslims use this month to start afresh and give their life a new direction.

For a symbolic gesture, it sure is sort of ironic with the many choices of food readily available, probably more in quantity and a lot more different than one would normally consume.

I am of course talking about the Ramadhan bazaars selling all sorts of yummy food and drinks from late afternoons to evenings, found almost everywhere in Malaysia during the holy month of Ramadhan, only once a year and you can’t get this sort of activity/community feel at any other time, your neighbourhood night market doesn’t even come close to it.

But who’s complaining? Not me; I’m not crazy.

Why do some people stuff themselves when the fast is over?

Those who are fasting should deprive themselves of the meals they would normally have during the times of fast but they shouldn’t really eat all they missed once the fast is over as this defeats the whole objective of the fast. When breaking the fast (of having breakfast, I guess), they should simply have the meal they would on any other day. It is permissible to have a more elaborate feast if one if hosting a ‘Iftar’ meal for guests as this is considered a good and noble act, in which there is divine reward.

Since I am not Muslim and I do not fast, that doesn’t really concern me and so I can gorge myself BECAUSE I CAN AND I DON’T CARE!!!

Yesterday I went to the Ramadhan bazaar at Sri Damansara. I came back a happier, fuller and heavier person.

ramadan bazaar 1
Clockwise: assorted kuih (cakes), assorted dishes, kuih tepung pelita and I have NO idea what it is in English, keropok lekor which is a deep-fried combination of fish and starch or something like that. It’s teh good.

ramadan bazaar 2
Clockwise: ayam madu (honey glazed chicken), delish dishes in a row, murtabak, assorted kuih (cakes)

Tunisia dates
Naturally sweet dates (kurma), normally eaten as pembuka selera. This is my private stash neh neh neh neh neh.

Suanie's dinner
This was my dinner - white rice with ayam masak santan, stir-fried kacang buncis and sotong sambal. There were a few other stuff as well but I ate them all before I could photograph them.

Boo_licious of my favourite food blog Masak-masak went to the Ramadan bazaar at Section 14 in Petaling Jaya. Damien recommended it to me before and told me that it is quite famous for the number and variety of stalls. You can read about Boo_licious’s visit here.

jack’s place fat steaks

I was feeling kind of down, what with the haze and some recent personal events that I decided I should have something nice to eat today. Jaime asked me to join her in KL but I wasn’t feeling up to painting the town red, so I grabbed KY and Carol and we had dinner at Jack’s Place in 1U.

Starbucks Coffee Jelly Frap Starbucks was nearby, so I just popped in and grabbed a Coffee Jelly Frappucino.

It’s all Jaime’s fault - she introduced it to me and now I’m hooked! But you know the thing about Starbucks coffee is that it makes your pee smell of coffee as well. It’s not like seriously unpleasant, it just smells of coffee. Not like I intentionally go smell my pee, but I can’t help it lah since I’m in the same toilet, aren’t I? And I don’t get this smell with any other coffee, just Starbucks coffee. Weird, right?

Ermm.. since this is about food, I will try not to gross you out. But think about it and if you have similar experiences, let me know!

Anyway our food arrived…

button mushrooms with lobster and crab meat This is button mushrooms stuffed with lobster and crab meat, covered in a light layer of cheese, all baked together-gether (RM18). Yummy!

The garlic bread on the side came with our soup. Definitely one of the better garlic breads I’ve had - a generous mix of butter and garlic, just nice. I had soup of the day (RM5) which was leek and potato, quite nice though the leek wasn’t very noticable. KY and Carol had cream of shitake mushroom soup or something like that; B-O-R-I-N-G! But not bad.

But you can see that Carol and KY were very excited like small kids like that. Sometimes you just can’t bring them out anywhere…. *sigh*

carol and ky

KY and I had the filet mignon (RM38.90 or something like that), it’s a reasonable sized slab of meat with a piece of beef bacon, a fat baked potato and some vege - one broccoli stem, 5 carrot slices and a couple slices of onion.

filet_mignon

Both of us had it medium rare. Tender and juicy!

good hearty steak

Carol had the Jack’s special steak, medium. No photos ‘coz it looked rather the same, just less bloody.

Of course I ate EVERYTHING!

Nothing better than food therapy.
