hk june 08 - what little alcohol tales

The last time I had a beer in Hong Kong was at Delaney’s along Peking Road. Well, it was actually more like the basement of a building. Back then I was drinking alone. This time round I had a friend to drink with me!

I think it was the second evening when we had our first beer. After walking around Central, looking for Pottinger Street (as recommended by Su Ann), we went back to Lan Kwai Fong to freshen up, heheh. Only a couple of bars looked promising, and we ended up in a cosy little bar along D’Aguilar Street.

If you know the area well, you’ll surely know where we parked our arses

Some genius in a flashy car braked and a policeman (or traffic dude, don’t know which) hit him from behind. Provided lots of entertainment (for me).

The next day, the pub was closed so we went to a German pub up the street, Schnurrbart where I had a Warsteiner and a König Pilsener. We also had our dinner there but that belongs in the food post.

Since some clever peeps did not lock their router, we were able to leech off their Wi-Fi and so had a spanking good time catching up with e-mails and stuff. For me at least, because Erna bought herself a Wi-Fi access thingy.

At Stanley, I saw this poster on the wall and I just had to take a photo of it…

I don’t like San Miguel. It sucks.

Also spotted at Stanley Market, an advertisement for Baileys Haagen-Dazs!

Hello, come to Malaysia, can?

Unfortunately it was too early in the morning for Baileys, ice-cream or not. What, you think I’m Fireangel ar? :P

tuborg launch @ mardi gras, 1u

Last Friday I was invited to the launch of TUBORG at Mardi Gras @ 1U. Thought I’d blog about it now to take off some of the undue stress caused by the darn slow Maxis customer log-in site. Short story short, I’d opted not to receive printed billing, just thought I’d help save some trees. But the site is unbelievably slow that I feel like yanking off my hair.

Anyway.. Tuborg by Carlsberg has been launched in Malaysia. From what I tasted, it’s slightly less bitter than other readily-available beer. It should appeal to people like FA who doesn’t really enjoy beer (“Fuck this, beer is so bitter, how can ANYONE LIKE IT OMG OMG OMG 1111″) but is sometimes forced to consume it because people around her do.

Clicking on the photo above will take you to a slightly larger version, where you can really ogle

I guess the part I like best about this Tuborg is how they added a pull-off cap to each bottle. Eliminates the need for a bottle opener, and I wish every other canned or bottled food and drink would have this pull-off cap thing. I don’t like can or bottle openers. I’ve been forced to use them since I was little, especially if mom is busy in the kitchen and needs someone to help her open this or that. Can and bottle openers are the bane of my existence.

Tuborg Malaysia launch - GBC boys
Can’t remember who, and a GBC Boy dancing at the back

The performances were really awesome :D Basically the Carlsberg/ Tuborg people got some boys with six-packs to run around the stage revealing their perfectly-formed assets. All those hours working so hard at the gym… I appreciate them, I do! :D

There was this local group, Gila Battle Crew (GBC) doing all sorts of funky stuff with their hands, legs and head. Michael Yip has a much better shot of them at his blog. They were so rockin’!

There was this Australian dance group, The Next Step who just moved and danced around a lot, incorporating various styles in their performance. I managed to find only one article about them on the Net, here you go.

Also took a short video of their performance. If you want to watch it, I really recommend that you turn your speakers OFF, and just WATCH without sound. Sorry ar, boh lui to buy a more canggih camcorder, hence the seriously distorted sound.

Hehehe, we had fun. At least until the free beer ran out :P

Thanks to Kuan Mei for the invite. Hi to Michael Yip and Eddy Han, as well as this really gorgeous guy that I saw somewhere in the crowd. You be in my dreams.

heineken ‘life below zero’ - beer served exxxtra cold.. brrrrr!

A few of us were invited to the Heineken Life Below Zero launch last Monday at Velvet Underground @ Zouk KL. So off we went, and despite it being a week night (old bones, not so happening anymore) we had lots of fun! Well to be fair anything that involves free (good) alcohol is fun ;)

We were sent a ’survival kit’ that turned out to be a scarf…

Heineken Extra Cold - Something in the mail
… for the cold nights…

Me and Fireangel reached the venue on time(she drove, omg history was made) and we lepak outside waited around a bit for the other noobs to arrive. They were serving Heineken on tap for those waiting for the launch to commence. A short while later we were ushered into Velvet Underground where the event would take place.

Bottles of Heineken stuck in ice! Someone rescue my babies!!!

Joey G emceed (he’s everywhere, isn’t he?), got a few Heineken people to get on stage to say a few words. Up until then I had no idea what the launch was about. We were then shown a presentation that made all the sense in the world (to me).

If you are a solid beer drinker, piss warm beer be your kryptonite. Conventional coolers chill your beer from 4 to 6 degree Celsius, and sometimes they don’t stay cold for very long. I don’t think I really need to explain this bit, unless you are allergic to alcohol or you are under 18 years of age, then you shouldn’t really be learning about all these things until you grow up :D

My babies got rescued after all!

So Heineken got this really cool idea to obtain some sub-zero coolers, which will chill your beer at an impressive -2 degree Celsius. By now most of the major pubs and clubs in KL/PJ have the sub-zero coolers installed for Heineken on tap. So piss warm Heineken is a thing of the past, barring an electrical power meltdown.

No thorn among roses jokes, kthx

Before the presentation, I was thinking that maybe it would be something like an extra ingredient in Heineken to make it extra icy cold. Okay, so the story is that, I’ve bought ‘Nescafe Dingin’ a few times, and I highly suspect that the reason it kept ‘dingin’ or ‘cool’ for a longer time was NOT because of its refrigeration, but of its ingredients. There’s something in ‘Nescafe Dingin’ that tastes a little dry, and the sensation after a gulp was as if you’d swallowed dry ice. Not unpleasant mind you, but well, it’s an ingredient.

But happily for Heineken, the beer is not tampered, just the delivery :D Unfortunately it also means that you can’t get Heineken served extra cold at home, unless you have a mini Alaska going on in your kitchen. Oh well. All the more reason for going out and socialise, no?

So what does Heineken served extra cold tastes like? Erm… like Heineken beer… -_-” Heh, well it was almost frozen, the few degrees do make a hell of a difference. For the average Joe, it means that when you order beer on tap, leave it there for a bit while you chat with your friends, you don’t return to a mug of beer going the way of global warming.

It was like smooth golden nectar down my throat :D

in search of friends and booze (sg)

A few years ago, I got to know Pinky from an on-line chatroom. We got along rather famously, and she is one of the reasons why I gladly refrain from generalising Singaporeans to be similar to a certain other pink blogger, ahem.

Then came one Saturday morning when I was in the office and rather bored. Out of a whim I messaged Pinky and asked her if I could bunk at her place if I went to Singapore. She said yes. So I took the afternoon bus and arrived at Singapore at night. Pinky was a fabulous host, I had a most wonderful and memorable trip, we became good friends since.

(She did burn my toast, but that’s another story :D)

To cut a long story short, I did the same thing last weekend. Still don’t quite know why, probably a sub-conscious thing about my expensively renewed passport sitting alone in the corner feeling useless and rather blank.

We had simple food for lunch, but the company was great ;)

not another post on carnegies

… but there are some photos, so might as well :P

It was all David Tall’s fault. He told us here that they have some ladies night thing going on every Wednesdays, so off we went yesterday in search of barely-drinkable-but-wallet-friendly alcohol.

The ladies night thing starts at 9 p.m. Because we arrived early, we had a couple of Tiger and Hoegaarden. By bottle not tap because they were out of stock, WTF?!?!?!?!

Fireangel loves Hoegaarden

KY had a dinner of very healthy grilled prawns on a bed of tossed salad, which was a lot nicer than what we had the other day.

KY's prawns

One thing didn’t change though — the service was excruciatingly s-l-0-w. I suppose they are constantly understaffed… shouldn’t the management be doing something about this? At one point we waited 45 mins for our drinks to arrive, and any beer drinker can tell you that this is BAD.

It was so bad that the next round, Paul decided to order three whiskey coke at one go.

Paul's best friends

Then later Jaime arrived. She waited a bloody long time for her first drink as well, and half an hour later it was officially ladies night so every girl was handed 4 coupons to be redeemed at the bar for small portions of house cocktails and beer.

Carnegies KL - KY and Jaime

Oh yeah, Encik David Tall was there as well but he ignored us most of the time… hmphhhh :P

Anyway the ladies night serving of Long Island Tea, according to Fireangel tasted like mosquito repellent. I liked it.

Suanie not drunk

It was quite fun, except for the waiting. KY and Paul got bored with the girls dancing and went outside to chat… but we went home relatively early :D

As a parting shot, here’s a photo of Fireangel that is bound to increase my hits and comments, as always.

Fireangel is a lady

Though I just noticed that it’s a little scary, only the whites of her eyes are showing, OMG FIREGHOSTTTT!!!!!!!!11111oneoneone
