Prince of Wales Backpacker Hostel in Little India

As mentioned earlier, we stayed at the Prince of Wales Backpacker Hostel in Little India. I’d seen it before — when FA and I were in Singapore last year, we stayed at the Perak Hotel, also in Little India. There were lots of people drinking and generally having a good time at the POW when we passed by the place, so that kind of stuck in my mind.

Hostel guests get S$2/3 off selected booze, so it was S$5 for a bottle of San Miguel. I know, I know… normally I’d rather drink my own urine than to consume San Miguel, but… I have no excuses.

Would I recommend the place? Sure, if you don’t mind the surrounding noises by the pubs and clubs around Little India.

Nasi Beryani Ayam @ Singapore Zam Zam, Bugis

Bob suggested that we check out this restaurant in Bugis that apparently serves good nasi beryani and murtabak. Luckily he knew the way (I’m not familiar with Bugis) — it’s right opposite the Sultan Mosque. The place seemed popular and we had to wait a while to get a table.

Doesn’t the photo above makes you want to attack the plate of food? Well, I randomly take okay photos sometimes, so lesson #1: photos can be deceiving. I was unable to finish my dinner, and Bob had a hard time with it too. It was edible lah, just terribly bland and tak sedap. Oh well.

Esplanade - Theaters on the Bay

The next day we headed over to Esplanade for the reason we were in Singapore — Avenue Q. There was a massive jumbled-up hula hoops thing on display.

Singapore Nov 2008 - Art at the Esplanade
Obviously someone else appreciates this more than me

Art is perspective indeed. I don’t remember the description, but it had a very canggih and artsy-fartsy one. Looks like MS Paint to me.

Avenue Q The Musical

OMAIGOD the show was more than brilliant! We had the best cheap tickets (’cos we bought them in July) and everything was more than fantastic! The set, the songs, the costumes, the puppets, the actors/ actresses… I loved loved LOVED it!

Singapore Nov 2008 - Suanie posing in front of an AvenueQ poster
I heart Avenue Q!

It was a mostly Filipino cast, which was why the songs didn’t sound the same on the soundtrack. Still bloody awesome! We laughed so hard, we clapped after every song, and we laughed again. It’s on-going till Nov 16th, so go catch it if you can! Go alone, doesn’t matter, just go!

Subway in Singapore

… has bacon as in BACON, and ham as in HAM. And honey mustard! Absolutely fabulous!

Tidak ditanggung halal

I don’t think I’ll be able to eat a Malaysian Subway sandwich for a long time after having the Singaporean ones.

Brewerkz at Riverside Point, Clarke Quay

My only must-go place in Singapore is Brewerkz after Edwin introduced it to me years ago. If you’d notice my blog banner, it’s a photo of me drinking a Brewerkz Golden Ale. It just makes me happy :D

I think we were the loudest table there, heh. Sorry, but we had a most amazing time!

Ramen @ Ken, Orchard Plaza

After our pints and a whole beer tower, we decided to have ramen for supper at Ken in Orchard Plaza. Edwin and Pinky insisted that the ramen there is absolutely delicious, and the fact that they close at 2 a.m. (while stocks last) is a major plus.

It was delicious :D Patrick stopped by for a couple of Asahi, more talking and yapping and gossping — I had an absolutely fantastic time! Thanks! :D

smirnoff launches 2 new flavours… let’s partyyyyy!!!

A couple days ago, we were at The Sanctuary at The Curve to celebrate Smirnoff’s launch of two new flavours — green apple and vanilla. It was happening, it was FUN, here are some photos and bits and bobs.

Smirnoff party - Showcase of Smirnoff's 2 new vodka flavours in the Ice Bar in Sanctuary
Green apple, vanilla, green apple, vanilla and green apple Smirnoff…

(There will be regurgitated photos because… well only a few people I know were there mah…)

I reached The Sanctuary about 8.20 pm, and there was a line of invited guests waiting to go in. Then one of the organisers saw me, and I was whisked to the Media/Bloggers registration counter. Heheh, what perks ;)

I went straight to the table where Kelvin was already seated. He was accompanied with a guy who won the contest by Coconuts. Sorry can’t remember your name dude, but he was friendly and nice, a bit quiet because apparently this was his first time going to ’something like this’. Har, no clubbing before? Not really.. heh good luck in Netherlands dude!

Later ShaolinTiger arrived, and JoeyG took the stage and said some stuff, then there was really good music spinning…

We had different cocktails mixed with Smirnoff vodka!

After a while, we were whisked into the Ice Bar (where the temperature was -15 degree celcius but no wind, thank goodness) to sample the different Smirnoff flavours…

Smirnoff party - Suanie freezing in the Ice Bar in Sanctuary
It was cold….

Hot Kim (better known as kimfluttersby) was there… I think she looks a bit like Uma Thurman…

Kim wore the same colour as the bottle…

Kim is also one of the contestants of StarCeleb, a reality TV show on the search for 2 multi-talented individuals ready for stardom and more. StarCeleb will air on NTV7 every Sunday at 6 p.m., beginning this September. Go visit the StarCeleb website to find out how you can be part of the Live Recordings… Go Kim!!!!!

In comparison, here’s me posing with a Smirnoff Green Apple bottle…

Cannot make it lah :P But the new flavours were nice lor. We had lots and lots of Smirnoff Green Apple… :P

My hangover lasted 24 hours. But it was really fun, and I haven’t had this kind of fun for the longest time! I also helped a girl crying in the toilet back to her car, but that’s another story.

Thanks for having me!!!!!!!!!!

Others blogged about it too! :: kimfluttersby, Xes, ShaolinTiger, kinkybluefairy

not another post on carnegies

… but there are some photos, so might as well :P

It was all David Tall’s fault. He told us here that they have some ladies night thing going on every Wednesdays, so off we went yesterday in search of barely-drinkable-but-wallet-friendly alcohol.

The ladies night thing starts at 9 p.m. Because we arrived early, we had a couple of Tiger and Hoegaarden. By bottle not tap because they were out of stock, WTF?!?!?!?!

Fireangel loves Hoegaarden

KY had a dinner of very healthy grilled prawns on a bed of tossed salad, which was a lot nicer than what we had the other day.

KY's prawns

One thing didn’t change though — the service was excruciatingly s-l-0-w. I suppose they are constantly understaffed… shouldn’t the management be doing something about this? At one point we waited 45 mins for our drinks to arrive, and any beer drinker can tell you that this is BAD.

It was so bad that the next round, Paul decided to order three whiskey coke at one go.

Paul's best friends

Then later Jaime arrived. She waited a bloody long time for her first drink as well, and half an hour later it was officially ladies night so every girl was handed 4 coupons to be redeemed at the bar for small portions of house cocktails and beer.

Carnegies KL - KY and Jaime

Oh yeah, Encik David Tall was there as well but he ignored us most of the time… hmphhhh :P

Anyway the ladies night serving of Long Island Tea, according to Fireangel tasted like mosquito repellent. I liked it.

Suanie not drunk

It was quite fun, except for the waiting. KY and Paul got bored with the girls dancing and went outside to chat… but we went home relatively early :D

As a parting shot, here’s a photo of Fireangel that is bound to increase my hits and comments, as always.

Fireangel is a lady

Though I just noticed that it’s a little scary, only the whites of her eyes are showing, OMG FIREGHOSTTTT!!!!!!!!11111oneoneone

hoegaarden pints @ carnegies, kl

My colleague Jess promised to hunt down Hoegaarden on tap in KL for me and boy, did she come through.

Janice with a Hoegaarden pint
Janice couldn’t believe her luck at one so big

The heaven on earth is Carnegies KL at Central Plaza along Jln. Sultan Ismail, a proper pub where they serve proper beer and cocktails.

RM24 a pint, how wonderful
How orgasmic is that?

They cater to mostly after-work hours revellers and random beer drinkers like me and friends. It is a pretty okay place, the music is rock-ish pleasant, they have quiz nights etc.

Carnegies KL - Interior
Inside Carnegies

Beware of the stairs going down to the toilets though, especially if you are in heels and not quite sober. I still have the bruises.

It was V-day eve and we decided to have a little celebration there. The food is nothing to shout about, and Paul would not recommend the steak.

Carnegies KL - food
Which of the above caused Paul to have a toothache for days?

But the beer… oh the beer…

Suanie's precious hoegaarden
My precious…

I think that the Hoegaarden on tap in Singapore is somehow better, but Carnegies KL is the only place in KL that I know is serving it on tap, and beggars cannot be choosers.

Drunk posers

when Paul goes wtf

We had a couple of Bellinis — champagne and peach thingy. According to J&J, Telawi Street Bistro @ Bangsar serves better cocktails.

Janice has a new Sony Cyber-shot DSC-N1, the touch screen thing where you can add words and images and stuff.

Ah well. Beer, anyone?

oktoberfest @ 1u, malaysian style

So there was this event advertising cheap beer, food and lotsa fun. Takkan I don’t go, right?

Where: Rainforest Ground Floor, New Wing, 1 Utama
When: 21-23 Oct 2005, 5 pm onwards
What: Main attraction is the RM1 coin for a bottle of Warsteiner, exchangeable for a new bottle with your empty one
Why: ‘Coz Malaysians are suckers for unbelievable deals

FA and I reached 1U at around 3 plus, hung out a bit at Starbucks then went to plonk our asses at the venue (next to Cravings which is next to Dome) at around 4. Kiasu mah. The other fella who was supposed to be there at around 3+ was stuck in a jam bwahahahaha!

Oktoberfest in Malaysia 01
Got magician, got band, got people, so nice.

Then other people start arriving, very difficult to get a table so the management had to source for other tables which took some time, and then the queue for the RM1 coin Warsteiner began to get ridiculous; stretching all the way to Dome ok.

At 5 p.m. the RM1 coin Warsteiner booth was opened for business! Yay!

Oktoberfest in Malaysia 02

Of course got people who after getting their first bottle, rejoined the queue, finished their bottle in hand while in the queue just in time for a new bottle when it was their turn again. Ingenious, ingenious, but too bad the very first people at the line could get at most 3 rounds for the 500 Warsteiner bottles were gone in 20 minutes.

While stocks last mah.

The ‘other fella’ joined the queue and redeemed a bottle. Warsteiner not nice also, Hoegaarden better bleh.

There was also assorted brands like Hoegaarden, Budweiser, Lette, Stella Artois and this and that which goes for RM15 per bottle and RM50 for 4 bottles, which you can mix and match. There was one other brand that I don’t remember that goes for RM20 per bottle and RM70 for four, obviously we didn’t get that.

There was also food by Cravings and EuroDeli. Basically Cravings provided RM8 per dish of fried chicken wings (2 per serving so it’s RM4 per wing, SIEN!), fried wan tan, deep fried spare ribs (damn cun, tidak ditanggung halal) and two other stuff that I took no notice. EuroDeli served all the fat sausages and meatloaf and stuff for; get this, RM9 per MEAT! No potato, no this-that, got one bun and mustard and ketchup and stuff, but RM9 per sausage, RM9 per slice of meatloaf, it’s a bit rip-off right?

Sigh, whatever lah, we were hungry.

Oktoberfest in Malaysia 03
Got (expensive) food, got beer, so fun.

At around 7p.m. Tv Smith came by and four makes a nice KY-copyrighted collage.

Oktoberfest in Malaysia 04

Despite all the not so Germany Oktoberfest Oktoberfest, not-so-cold beer, out of ice fiasco, nothing else but Victoria Bitter, damn long queue for overpriced sausages, 500 RM1 Warsteiner gone in 20 mins, the band playing funeral procession tunes… the company was great so yeah it was fun.

Oktoberfest in Malaysia 05

But one time is enough lah. Not going again today nor tomorrow. If you are, good luck, have fun, bring lots of cash, enjoy.

And of course I didn’t forget about the FireAngel Fan Club.
