The Best Mobile Phone in the Market Now

… is the Samsung Galaxy SII. True story.

Samsung Galaxy SII

Look at how sleek it is, doesn’t it make you want one already? In the interest of boring but important disclosure, I do not have a Samsung Galaxy SII… yet. This situation will be rectified once a certain telco contract ends in January next year, and I’ll be ready for the phone that I’ve been pimping to friends and relatives alike.

In the meantime, I’ve been pretty good at ignoring people like Kimberlycun, YukiSQ and my cousin when they proudly brandish their brand new Samsung Galaxy SII in front of me. Yes it’s the jealousy, look the other way, look the other way…!

This Android device is slim, fast and powerful (as are the basic requirements of a smart phone these days) and as the crash test video below shows, durable. Very important point for someone with butter fingers like me!

I’ve played around with the phone for a bit and am quite taken by the camera, an important feature for me as I like taking a lot of photos but do not like lugging my digital camera around. The Samsung Galaxy SII’s camera is 8MP with a single LED flash, here are a couple of photos that I found on Flickr taken using the Samsung Galaxy SII.

Sushi to Go, Narita Airport

The End Of The Earth?

Awesome, right? The SII also records and playbacks HD videos. Other features that I tested was reading books on the SII, good experience thanks to the super bright big screen. Loads websites quickly, even flash ones.

There’s an on-going video submission microsite for SII appreciative owners and fans, this one got me laughing heheh:

I like Yap Thomas‘ video on how he uses the SII for work on the go. He’s in a travel agency so I bet it’s pretty nifty to be able to respond quickly to his clients while not having to bring a heavy laptop around.

And not forgetting Kim’s:

Has she told the story of when her SII got stolen for a few hours and how it was finally retrieved? Well you should ask her, in fact it’s so intriguing that they should make a short movie out of it :)

So when are you getting your own? ;)

The Best Som Tam in Klang Valley!

Thanks to Grill Sergeant Lance, I’ve found the best tasting, most delicious som tam in Klang Valley!

… which could possibly be an exaggeration as I don’t eat a lot of som tam in Klang Valley. But the ones that I did eat in Klang Valley (even the few in Bangkok) pale in comparison to this one!

So here I say to you: the Best Som Tam in Klang Valley according to Suanie (which is the only opinion that matters according to me) is at the Thai market in front of the Thai temple Wat Chetawan, Off Jalan Gasing!

Actually the market bit consists of several Thai vendors peddling their food and assorted goods out of the back of their cars. They are only around every Sunday from noon onwards. The best som tam I’m talking about is from this vendor:

Thai market Jalan Gasing - Som tam seller

The husband is Malaysian and the wife is from Northern Thailand. She’s been here for nearly 20 years, their oldest son is already 18 years old and she took the initiative to learn Mandarin. She also makes a mean som tam!

Thai market Jalan Gasing - making the som tam

On weekdays the couple operate a food stall in Sg Long selling Thai food other than som tam. On Sundays they’re at Wat Chetawan till about 4 or 5pm.

I was chatting so much with them about other things that I forgot to ask for their names. Well they’re the only green car there and she’s almost always in the same outfit, can’t miss them!

Thai market Jalan Gasing - with the som tam

One serving is RM5 and you can choose the level of spiciness. The normal level is very shiok but the more I ate, the more it burned. It’s also because I like to let it soak for a bit, let the marinade seep into the papaya to make it more flavourful.

Young papayas + long beans + tomatoes + dried crunchy shrimps + chilli + fish sauce + lime juice + sugar + peanuts… so yum that you need to try it now!

… or every Sunday at the Thai market, Wat Chetawan, Off Jalan Gasing.

Yanni Live on Tour

:D :D :D

We only appreciated his genius after watching his Yanni! Live in Concert DVD which was different from his older, more sombre types of concerts. Until today I can’t go through some songs without feeling those goosebumps!

Thrilled as he doesn’t come to our neck of the woods often. Have much faith in the non-flooding in Bangkok, which if my faith was misplaced, my blog goes to ShaolinTiger who’s probably the only one who knows what to do with it…!

You have a good start to the week too! :)

Kronenbourg Blanc is my new Hoegaarden!

I had my first Hoegaarden in Singapore many (many many many) years ago. Boy was it different from anything I’ve had! So refreshing and delicious, so out of this world! It remained my favourite beer for a long time. These days Hoegaarden is not a rare commodity but back then the only place that served it in draught form was Carnegies at Central Plaza, now the Qatar Airways KL office. Needless to say, I spent a lot of time there. Those were the days…

Then I grew older (who would have guessed?) and my palate changed. I outgrew Hoegaarden, explored and moved on to other things. Went back a couple of times but could never get the same taste and feel of how it used to be. Says a lot about a lot of things :)

Anyway I had a taste of Kronenbourg Blanc recently and I think I found my Hoegaarden replacement!

Dinner at Samplings, Fourteen with Kronenbourg Blanc

Kronenbourg Blanc only came to Malaysia a few months ago, brought in by the Carlsberg/Luen Heng guys. It comes in bottle form, only available in selected pubs for now but the distributor have big plans for it. I was told that they’re making it available in draught here as early as next year.

If you had Hoegaarden before, you’d have a basic idea of what the Kronenbourg Blanc is like. Just imagine it to be a crispier, more citrusy (but not overpoweringly so) and more fragrant version. This is a very easy beer to drink, tastes of fruits and summer. You should try it out if you can. Not yet available in supermarkets so you’ve to get it at Carlsberg-associated pubs, e.g. Library and Movida.

I have 2 bottles chilling in my fridge. Don’t jealous :D

Marketing = Perspective

Ohai I’m back from blog hibernation. Well it’s the Internet, one day is like 7 years or something.

So I was at KFC buying food for the family (we love our KFC) and I saw the promotion poster for World Hunger Meal:

KFC World Hunger meal

Basically you purchase a World Hunger Meal that consists of 2 pieces of chicken, 1 regular whipped potato, 1 regular coleslaw, 1 bun and 1 regular carbonated drink for RM10.60 and 50 sen from that amount will be forwarded to the World Food Programme. Very noble yo, makes me want to do good and not lift my fingers from enjoying my very delicious KFC original recipe.

Then I reminded myself that I qualify to be a kiamsiap housewife so I looked at the regular KFC menu for comparison.

KFC Snack Plate Sept 2011

Snack plate: 2 pieces of chicken, 1 regular whipped potato, 1 regular coleslaw and 1 bun for RM8.30, add on a regular carbonated drink OR dessert cup for RM1.80 which comes out to… RM10.10! Add another RM0.50 to that and guess how much that comes up to?

So yes, the 50 sen for the World Food Programme doesn’t come out from KFC’s own pockets though it may give such an impression. I have to say that its success rate will be a lot higher than putting a tabung at the cashier soliciting donations.

Ok that’s all.
