pimpage: big apple donuts & coffee/ satellite party

One day my sister came home with a big box of doughnuts. Very enthusiastically, she told me to try them. But I looked at box of doughnuts with disdain because:

1) I am not a doughnut person
2) I am not a doughnut person
3) Repeat 1 and 2

Then dinner was late that day, and I had no choice but to consume a doughnut to tahan lapar.

Then yesterday, I had this inane craving for doughnuts, no thanks to Kim and Nick. So during lunchtime, I drove to The Curve to get myself some lovely doughnuts from Big Apple Donuts & Coffee.

Big Apple Doughnuts

It’s a little shop between a shop being renovated called ‘The Apartment’ and ‘Eden’. They have ample of varieties to choose from — mango cream, bananarama, green tea, this and that icing, berry, glazed and semi-glazed, and so on. RM 2 for one doughnut, and RM 17 for a dozen. Can’t remember the price for half a dozen. Who wants only half a dozen anyway?

The owner of the shop, Mike was there. Friendly, amiable chap and we chatted for a bit. Mike had spent several years in the US and wanted Malaysians to savour the same doughnuts he had there. I mean, if you are in Malaysia and never been out of the country, you’d think Dunkin Donuts to be the heaven of donuts. I thought so too, then… :D

Mike’s face literally lit up when he talked about his doughnuts. He said that he bought his machineries and ingredients from US, so I was thinking that his everyday cost must not be cheap lah. The outlet in The Curve is the first and they will soon expand to Sunway Pyramid and maybe other places. Even customers from Singapore are begging for him to open an outlet in the Lion City! Just a matter of time before world domination ;)

It has been a while since I was so excited about a new band/ album. Even my late discovery of John Mayer was not this big, and I was pretty big on John Mayer. So excited I was about the following band and their debut album that I could hardly contain myself when I told Serena about them.

Satellite Party - Ultra Payloaded Introducing SATELLITE PARTY!!!!!!!!!!!!! Granted some of you may have already heard of them, may like or dislike them, but it’s my blog and hence it’s my discovery!! Satellite Party is fronted by Perry Farrell who used to be in bands that I couldn’t care less about.

The lead guitarist is Nuno Bettencourt whose legendary skills can be heard in the song ‘More Than Words’ which is the sappiest song I’ve ever heard ( in a bad way ) and I cringe every time I have to listen to it. So I am glad he grew out of that.

The debut album is ‘Ultra Payloaded‘, released late last month, and it embodies fun, funk, Britpop, weirdness, happiness, a bit of metal, Jamiroquai’s spacey-ness, and I think it contains elements of warm, familiar tunes. Can’t name those tunes to save my life, but there you go.

With song titles like ‘Wish Upon A Dog Star’ ( first single ), ‘Kinky’, ‘The Solutionists’, ‘Awesome’ and ‘Insanity Rains’… I’ve been listening to them for a few days now and I grow more in love with their songs and music. My current favourite tracks are ‘Awesome’ and ‘Woman in the Window’. The latter has a couple lines that go, “Just try and stop us, we’re going to love.”

Yes I’m emo. Whatever.

churrascaria: brazilian bbq @ carnaval, damansara jaya

What is a churrascaria?

A churrascaria is a Brazilian or Portuguese steakhouse. Churrasco is the cooking style, which translates roughly from the Portuguese for ‘barbecue’. However, in order to avoid confusion, it is important to state that in the rest of South America other than Brazil, the ‘barbecue’ method of cooking meat is known as asado.

Distinctly a South American style rotisserie, it owes its origins to the fireside roasts of the gaúchos of southern Brazil traditionally from the Pampa region, centuries ago. In modern restaurants, rodizio service is typically offered. Servers come to your table with knives and a skewer, on which are speared various kinds of meat, be it beef, pork, filet mignon, lamb, chicken, duck, ham (and pineapple), sausage, fish, or any other sort of local cut of meat.

I thought we should get that explained and be done with :D

Many many days ago, The Paul, The Spongefox and I zoomed around for a bit to look for a place to have dinner. They decided on a place I’d never been to before; even though it was a bit out of my budget, I agreed because they said it was one of the things I’d have to do before I die. Or something to that effect. Or I just totally made that up, but who cares :D IT’S MY BLOG AND I’M A LIAR OMG :P

Once we were seated, the manager (I think) came over and explained how the whole thing works. For the half buffet, you get to clear the entire salad bar. For the full buffet, you get to clear the entire salad bar, AND their storage of meat barbecued Brazilian style.

We opted for the full buffet, and so we helped ourselves to the salad bar while waiting for the chefs to come round our table with meats. I took note of the following dishes offered at the salad bar:

Coleslaw, green salad, macaroni, rice, potato salad, fried aubergines, kidney beans, mango kerabu, diced tomatoes in garlic and basil, wedges, deep-fried lady’s fingers with sambal, some meat and other stuff. There were altogether 18 dishes, I didn’t take any photographs because I couldn’t really be bothered :D

Then came the meat ……

The chefs, some Brazilian and some not, came around the tables with a long skewer, and if you want ‘em, they’d carve you a slice there and then. Actually it was a bit scary — I kept thinking the guy was going to cut me or something — the carving knives looked bloody murderous. But they were real professional (and tolerant of my lame jokes).

I took note of the meats offered: Chicken, chicken gizzard, chicken liver, chicken sausage, smoked chicken ham, grilled prawns, fish fillet, lamb shoulder, lamb cutlets, roast beef, garlic beef, beef tri-tip, beef topside, and another cut of the cow that I forgot which.

The non-meat type also served on a skewer were: bread with sour cream (warm, crispy) and grilled pineapple (very sweet).

Carnaval Churrascaria - Fresh grilled prawns

They were all AWESOMEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! To quote The Spongefox,

This Brazilian meat is like orgasm in my mouth…

My favourites in order of preference: beef topside (tasted like the best ’siu yok’ in town, grilled prawns (damn fresh!), garlic beef and lamb cutlets (extremely tender). The photo below shows the beef topside that I still yearn for at this very minute….

Carnaval Churrascaria - Excellent topside beef

For dessert we had Caramelised Banana — oven-grilled banana served with vanilla ice cream and caramel sauce.

I thought it was okay only.

But the beef… the prawns… the lamb………. *slurpssssssssssss*

Not a cheap affair though. The full buffet costs RM48++ per person, and the half buffet costs RM30++. Dessert was RM9++, a glass of Coke was RM5++, and a glass of water was RM1 ++. Not sure if they charge every time they refilled the water — we had one glass each.

But if ever you feel generous and would like to ’spend’ me some Brazilian bbq, this is where we’d go yeah ;)

pork chop @ wendy’s bistro

I’ve been waiting for KY to blog about Wendy’s Bistro since forever (at least since we went there), but it doesn’t look as if it’s happening anytime soon. So I blog lor…

Btw good English and grammar tonight tak main.

I was flipping through some magazines when I saw an advertisement of succulent pork chops. Mmmm…. sounds irresistible, so I made a mental note of the restaurant.

Wendy’s Bistro was not difficult to find, it’s in Sunway Mentari, just opposide the famous steamboat or the other. (Will get a link from KY’s blog when I am not so lazy to search)

The first time I was there, it was a wonderful experience. I ordered a starter of portobello with bacon and melted cheese. Honestly I prefer William’s version — Wendy’s was all too mashed up together.

Then there was the pork chop, which I ate 1/3 of before remembering to take photos…

Wendy's Bistro Pork Chop

House specialty — pork chop rubbed with salt ‘n pepper, served with black pepper sauce and apple sauce. The sides were mashed potato and side salad.

Wendy's Bistro Pork Chop-close

A few days later 5 of us went back to the restaurant. It was really disappointing, mostly due to the service or lack thereof, KY was mighty pissed about it, FA had gastritis, no one was really happy lah.

Speaking of pork, William said that Anthony Bourdain introduced bak kut teh as a Malay specialty. Noob.

cakes are great

Suddenly I feel like eating cake.

No thanks to Mama Min’s fantastic photos of the cakes she made for her customers. Browsing through her website, I feel as if my place in the world shrunk. I mean, I have NEVER seen cakes like the ones she made, let alone possessing the imagination to create the kind of cakes that are too pretty to be eaten.

Not to say my previous cake-baking attempts were anywhere near successful. The last time I tried my hands at mixing flour and sugar, I was wearing sky blue pinafores. The result was not pretty either. I was so let down by myself that I sulked and developed the grumpy face that I constantly wear today. My dad loved his daughter so much that he bravely gobbled down a couple slices. He’s my hero, I love him to bits. But that didn’t really help so I stopped doing what I suck at.

But back to Mama Min (who is Patrick Teoh’s wife and one of the stars of the latest OGAWA advertisement), I mean seriously, can you believe these cakes?!?!?

You so evil, Mama Min. You make me hungry.
