It’s gone Greek @ Eccucino with Chef George Diakomichalis

True conversation:
“I’m eating Greek tonight.”
“Who’s the lucky Greek?”

From now till 19th May, Chef George Diakomichalis brings a slice of Greece cuisine heaven to Eccucino at Prince Hotel & Residence Kuala Lumpur. It’s his second time here, having had a similar successful run last year also at Prince Hotel. Chef George is the 4th generation of chefs in his family from Adelaide where he owns the award-winning Kalymnos Patisserie.

He also bootcamps (and will take up the Viper Challenge) but that’s another story =D

We were at the opening night to find out what the Greek the food’s about. It was a cosy affair as Chef George decided to fly his whole family down to KL. Wife, 2 beautiful girls, parents, parents-in-law… It almost felt like we were intruding in a family party, heh.

The spread was fabulous, an inviting introduction to Greek cuisine. It helps that Eccucino was decked out in matching decor: Greek flags everywhere including one stuck inside an ice sculpture.

Besides the Greek feast, there were non-Greek food available on the buffet line for those not accustomed to the Mediterranean taste. But we’re not talking about them today =D

So, what do Greeks eat?

Spanakopita: baked spinach and filo pie. Grilled meats (choose lamb, beef and chicken). Yiros: Greek kebab with yoghurt, mmmm. Vine leaves stuffed with rice.

Greek Cuisine with Chef George Diakomichalis, Prince Hotel Kuala Lumpur - dessert

Dessert is something to look forward to as it’s Chef George’s specialty. Rizogalo: creamy rice pudding which was insanely delicious! Loukoumathes: fried honey puffs, a bit like fried doughnuts. Baklava, a rich sticky pastry of filo, chopped nuts and honey; one of my favourite things to eat! Koq: custard-filled shells with chocolate ganache spells decadence.

Other Greek desserts avalable: crunchy almonds coated in chocolate. I could use some of that right now. Cream kataifi which is custard cake with filo pastry, and a couple others that were gone before I had a chance to get to them :(

Greek Cuisine with Chef George Diakomichalis, Prince Hotel Kuala Lumpur - demo

Chef George had a baklava-making demo which I wasn’t paying much attention to because I was enthralled by his adorable daughter trying to see what her Dad was doing.

Greek Cuisine with Chef George Diakomichalis, Prince Hotel Kuala Lumpur - family

It was also Papa Diakomichalis’ birthday and they brought out a cake to celebrate. Told you it was a family affair :P Very Greek-ish, if what the movies tell me are true.

Chef George will be here until this Sunday for the Greek buffet spread at Eccucino. Catch him while you can! Stin iyia sou!

The story about the incident at the coffee shop

I was at Whisk 1U with Mom. She sat down, I went to the counter and ordered ice latte. It was a hot day, ice was in order. The guy asked if I wanted double shots (of espresso). Apparently their ice latte is better with double shots. I … [Continue reading]

The sandwich the morning after

This is a photo of a sandwich. Not just any sandwich, I call it the sandwich of recovery. It was the only thing I was able to stomach after a long (but fun) night out with 3 Scandinavian guys. A friend asked for recommendations on where to bring … [Continue reading]
