Like you, I’m a sucker for festive commercials that pull on my heart strings. The late Yasmin Ahmad pioneered this trend of emotional stories with not-so-subtle messages of filial piety. Now, we’ve come to expect similar themes from the big guns (who have the budget), and it’s something I look forward to every festive season.
I decided to compile some of this year’s Chinese New Year commercials and video ads. Some are heartbreaking, some make you think, some make you laugh and some might make you go, “iyerrr why so pariah one…”
Everyone’s a critic.
1. PETRONAS “Young Hearts”
This year, Petronas reminds us to be young at hearts regardless of physical age. Cute.
2. Naga DDB “Agency comes up with solution to counter the evil, diabolical effects of 2014”
What a promise, and Naga DDB delivered. This will wipe out all memories of last year’s annoying orange.
3. KIA “Happy Chinese New Year 2014”
This year, KIA hired funnyman Douglas Lim to direct their feel-happy ads. It didn’t work out well.
4. YORK Malaysia “God of Prosperity”
I burst out laughing at the final parts. What to do, I’m easily amused.
5. Coca-Cola “Chinese New Year 2014”
This is just your usual 30-second spot.. BUT LOOK AT ALL THAT FOOD OMG!!!!
6. Eu Yan Sang Malaysia “CNY TVC 2014”
Touches on high cost of buying a house, filial piety and features that uncle from every sad commercial. What’s not to like?
7. Virtigo Studio & Adini Productions “The Promise Part 2”
Inspired by a true story, the sequel to their 2013 short film ‘The Promise’. But you can skip that one and just watch this Part 2, not miss anything and feel your heart start to break.
After this I’m going home and hug my mother.
Happy Chinese New Year, Gong Xi Fa Chai! Kangkung lai lai lai…
