Maison Francaise; the French House, Kuala Lumpur

If you’re looking to impress and be impressed, Maison Francaise aka the French House is one of your best bets in town.

A classy, elegant three-storey bungalow converted into a restaurant tucked away in the heart of KL, the place comes with a swimming pool and an inviting view of the Twin Towers.

With tastefully selected artworks on display all around, it felt more like a diplomat’s home rather than a fine-dining restaurant. A fitting complement to Executive Chef Franck Lamache who is an excellent ambassador to French cuisine, especially the dishes he creates in the Maison Francaise kitchen.

Chef Franck worked in multiple Michelin-starred restaurants including Taillevent, Alain Ducasse and Les Ambassadeurs. He was also a private chef to the President of Kazakhstan!

And he made us lunch! What a treat!

Salade Landaise with foie gras from south of France and home-made smoked duck breast. Very French.

Maison Francaise Kuala Lumpur - landaise salad

Served on a textured black slate, it was almost too pretty to eat. Tender mixed greens, patterned potatoes, cheese, slices of tender smoked duck breast in a tangy vinaigrette, topped with a generous serving of foie gras.

Creamy and buttery, perfect with baguette. You can definitely appreciate the rich quality of the foie gras. An appetising start to the meal!

Hearty green asparagus soup made from scratch, served with cream and crouton. Fresh, green and glorious!

Seared black sea bass topped with garlic butter and green olives.

Maison Francaise Kuala Lumpur - seared black sea bass

(Proper) Sea bass is one of my favourite fish along with cod. Where I’d expect my cod to almost melt in my mouth, I have different expectations of the sea bass. It should be firm yet tender, with sweet flakey meat.

I think it’s such a great fish by itself that it doesn’t need too much accompanying sauces. And by jolly, the chef cooked it perfectly, loved the crispy skin!

Roasted Black Angus beef tenderloin with pumpkin puree and green peppercorn sauce.

When I saw this, I almost wept for joy. I know delicious beef when I see it; you can imagine how torturous it was to snap photos before we could attack it. Manners and restraint? What?

The tenderloin being the softest part is my favourite cut of meat. Chef Franck serves it medium rare, this time accompanied by roast garlic, carrots and fava beans. I read that to keep things interesting, he doesn’t often plate the same way, so you could be eating different accompaniments each time.

The taste? More exquisite than it looked. I have no words.

A gourmand platter selection of chocolate ganache and passion fruit mousse, vanilla ice-cream and entremet of red berry. A sweet ending to a most enjoyable refined lunch, surrounded by lush greenery and quietness.

Glancing through the wine menu, we came across a Chateaue Latour year 2009 priced at nearly RM16K. Robert M. Parker, Jr. gave it a perfect 100 RP points, describing it as ‘…an elixir of momentous proportions…” Epic copywriting, now I want a glass…
