There is an instant noodle revolution in Penang.
I know it because I live with a true blue Penangite. When she moves heaven and earth looking to buy a crate of instant noodles that she claims tastes like Penang curry noodles, you’d better believe it.
The MyKuali Penang White Curry Noodle is a recent product, yet has taken the entire Penang by storm. Apparently stock is so precious that people buy them in boxes for personal consumption.
On that note, I find it slightly strange because these people actually live in Penang, where a bowl of good, authentic Penang curry mee is just a short walk or drive away. Maybe they’re stocking up for their loved ones who don’t live there anymore, but miss the taste of home.
The instant noodles come with three mini flavouring packets: the seasoning powder (which contains MSG), the chilli paste that makes all the difference (contains shrimp paste) and the non-dairy creamer to give it the ‘white curry’ touch.
My housemate gave me one to try so I had it for dinner earlier. The verdict?
Fuwah, quite good! Spicy and flavourful, it made me forget for a moment that I was eating instant noodles.
Never mind that it didn’t have the usual Penang curry mee ingredients – pig’s blood (not that I eat it but for flavouring), cockles (same deal), cuttlefish, shrimps, beancurd puffs and beansprouts. It is after all, instant noodles and the flavours are all in the chilli paste. But feel free to add your own additional ingredients to make it a complete meal.
I think it is selling for RM6 for a pack of 4. Could be more expensive as currently the demand outweighs supply. I recommend that you give the MyKuali Penang White Curry Noodle a try. But if you’re in Penang, seriously lah skip all this nonsense and go out to eat the real thing.
