What can be so good about fried eggs that one has to venture all the way from PJ to KL for it?
Apparently very, very good. That was the main selling point of Restoran Muar, at least sold to me by Horng.
A restaurant selling Muar/Johorean-style food? Forgive me if I sound doubtful but I’ve lived in both Muar and Batu Pahat, naturally I’d have expectations.
Restoran Muar is located along the street behind Jalan Alor. It’s a couple of shops next to the famous beef noodle stall, and surrounded by assorted inexpensive guesthouses. The backpacker type, not so much the rent-by-hour type.
For the 6 of us, we had these dishes with white rice:
I was wondering how good can fried eggs be, right? Well this is possibly the best fried eggs in town! Like normal fried eggs but almost industrial-like heat allowed for egg whites to blend with hot oil resulting in a mash of crispy, mostly crunchy egg white fluff. All this without overcooking the yolk! Amazing skills indeed..!
The black part on top is just soy sauce. That’s additional information for non-Asians who may not understand why we eat our eggs with soy sauce. Because it’s damn delicious, that’s why.
Why are you still reading this? Why are you not out to get the most fabulous fried eggs in town??
Maybe it’s because you need more convincing. Hah, see the assam fish! It’s Chinese Muar-style, which means soupy (or slightly watery, however you like to define it), spicy and rather sourish. Very appetizing! I loveeee drowning my rice with the gravy, but then that’s how I eat my rice.
Some people may not be used to this version of assam fish. But really, this is just one of the many Johorean styles of cooking assam pedas so give it a try! If you are ever along the old Muar roads, stop by Parit Jawa in a Chinese fishing village. There’s a stall under a tree that serves the most delicious assam pedas I’ve ever had. Same style like this one, of course.
We also had: Butter Kailan (RM12). It’s the same way they cook those 2-types kailan, only that this version has butter and some sugar. Crunchy and different but not something I’d order as I prefer real non-deep fried greens. The rest enjoyed it though.
Otak-otak (RM12): fresh, steamed, soft, filled with lots of seafood. Slightly spicy even without the sambal on top.
Deep-fried salted squid & prawn (RM16): good mix of salty and spicy. Pretty tasty, actually. Not that we were expecting it to suck, but was pleasantly surprised when it came out better than we thought.
And as you can see in the last photo in the collage above, we devoured everything. EVERYTHING! But still had room for…
A small serving of cendol, red beans and crazily fragrant gula melaka for RM1… how can you resist??
I’ll be back indeed…!
