If not for this invitation, I wouldn’t have known that the Boulevard at Paradigm Mall is alive and happening. Most welcoming for al fresco dining and drinks and that’s where Fa-Ying as one of the new tenants come in.
Sister to the award-winning Rama V, Fa-Ying seeks to tantalise your taste buds with a blend of Thai and Western cuisine, resulting in unique cocktails and dishes that you’d probably never tried outside of KL before.
The granddaddy of Fa-Ying cocktails is the Marquessa (RM100++), served in a huge fishbowl and some fiery flair from the bartender. The mixture of dragon fruit, cucumber, burnt orange peel, Absolut Blue, white wine, soda and 7-Up can be lethal unless shared amongst friends for a chilled, relaxing night out in accordance to the restaurant’s ambiance. Other exotic cocktails and mocktails are available, such as the Mango Thai Pandan, Thai Tom Yam (it’s a drink!), Lemongrass Basil and Mango Sparkler and a decent range of assorted mojito.
Ready for food? My favourites at the food tasting were:
Scallops done just right on a tiny bed of spinach. Try it with the sauce, divine!
Marinated minced beef with a slightly spicy kick, eaten with crunchy cool Japanese cucumber. Can’t go wrong with that!
Beautifully marinated, tender lamb meat grilled to make you swoon and crave for more.
Other starters we tried were:
Pomelo salad with prawns (RM16++), grilled seafood satay (forgot price), watermelon salad (RM12++) and fish satay (forgot price). Decent but the first three starters that I highlighted stood out more than the others.
I enjoyed the mains, though I’m not sure if I’d be able to finish the entire dish by myself, having changed my eating style (a bit of everything instead of one big same thing). Possibly just the fish as it’s lighter than the rest.
Served with side Thai salad and string fries. Generous portions of sliced roasted duck with slightly tangy vegetables in toasted ciabatta, it felt more than right to me. I returned a couple of days after and had this again, yeap still tasted delicious.
Slightly creamy, spicy, peanuty sauce. Rather different, pretty good. Do give this a go as I think it’ll be one of their signature dishes. In my later visit, I shared this with Joyce and she enjoyed it as well.
Decent, fragrant, would have been better with al dente pasta.
Good serving of fresh, flaky cod with crusty skin served with grilled vegetables. Basically cod done right.
Hearty serving of tenderloin with green curry sauce. Happily they separated the two as the sauce, though delicious can taste too heavy especially when you’d like to first know how your meat tastes like. I presume that the tenderloin was served to us medium, perhaps medium rare would do more justice to the meat.
For desserts, creme brulee with lemongrass, banana fritters with ice-cream, fried sticky mango rice with ice cream and the perennial favourite, fresh mango with sticky rice. KY really enjoyed the banana fritters with ice-cream; in his own words, “it’s fried bananas with cold ice-cream, what can possibly go wrong with that??”
True, very true.
I highly recommend that you check out Fa-Ying and try out their twist on Thai food. Bear in mind that it’s newly opened and staff though attentive, may not fully understand what you require. As per all new establishments, some time, patience and training would gradually fix this common problem.
