Fried porridge and crab mihun @ Restoran Bubur Goreng, Klang

Fried porridge? Seriously, what is the world coming to? Doesn’t it worry you that reinvention of food has reached saturation when someone in the R&D of the Klang DaiChou Association stood up during its AGM and said, “Ok look here, why don’t we just FRY some porridge and sell it in a restaurant that shall be named… Restoran Bubur Goreng…?”

The floor was quiet for a few seconds though it seemed like an eternity. Finally a voice at the back said, “Dude, whatever you’re smoking, I want some too.”

Of course I made that up. No, I don’t know how they came up with the idea of frying porridge.

Restoran Bubur Goreng, Fried Porridge in Klang - corner shop

Restoran Bubur Goreng (translated: Fried Porridge Restaurant) is located in Taman Berkeley in Klang. It takes up a corner lot at a row nearby the Harvest Christian Assembly building. Parking is anywhere that you can slot your vehicle in, cowboy-style. But don’t go and scratch other people’s cars lah, accidentally or otherwise. You really don’t want to be offending anyone in Klang, just saying.

We were a group of 5, my colleagues did the ordering.

Restoran Bubur Goreng, Fried Porridge in Klang - food

Fried Porridge (RM12): Cooked with yam, tofu, dried cuttlefish, dried shrimps and topped with deep-fried pork lard. I mean, if you’re going to take a traditionally healthy dish and turn it into something that would bring you one step closer to the grave, then might as well go all the way, right?

Well, I liked it. A lot. It’s flavourful, satisfying and very fragrant with a strong seafood smell. Might not be everyone’s cup of tea (or bowl of porridge, har har) but I daresay you’ll have to try it before you judge it. The green chilli gives a good kick to the fried porridge but becareful, too much may give you a sore throat.

We also had siong thong lala (RM18), steamed clams with minced garlic, ginger and chilli in a subtle Chinese rice wine soup. The clams were fresh though I thought the soup could do with a bit more of everything; it was too tame for me.

Fresh mantis prawns (RM34) that only come in a mininum order of 10 prawns. You could have it cooked any style you like. Ours was fried with salted egg, it was rather delicious and the flesh was very sweet. The table next to us had it steamed and another table had it cooked with marmite.

Crab mihun (RM60) is a must-order. The two are fried together which means that the mihun absorbs the crabs’ essence; fanfriggintastic! The crabs were very fresh too. It was the last dish to arrive, the mihun goes well with the green chilli.

Enough talk. You need to go and try this… pleasant abnormality. So what they stir-fried porridge? Stranger things have happened and possibly to great outcomes too. Like this one.
