Batu Pahat fish ball noodles

Batu Pahat fishball noodles

This is fish ball noodles. There are many others like it, but this one is from Batu Pahat. I don’t know any other place that has a similar type of fish ball noodles. The noodles are handmade, homemade and has a light, slightly flourish texture. If I could accurately describe the airy sensation as I bite into the noodles, I’d be an accomplished food critic by now.

In case you are wondering, I’m not a food critic, accomplished or otherwise.

A typical serving consists of the noodles, a couple of fish balls, slices of various fish cake, bits of lean pork and a precious piece of lettuce. Two if you’re really lucky that the seller’s in a really good mood. As per Southern ways, we add ‘spiciness’ to our noodles if you want it hot instead of having a separate plate for chili and such. This is one thing that I really miss when I’m in Klang Valley, no one sells it like that here…!

Apparently it’s known as ‘Penggaram Mee’. Why ar? Just because Batu Pahat is Bandar Penggaram, is it? When I was younger, there used to be a fish ball noodle stall at the old Champion shoe shop near the pasar. You probably would have no idea what I just said, but it’s okay.

Now there are two places that sell this that I know of. One’s at the corner shop next to Courts Mammoth near to the bus station. The other is somewhere in Taman Bukit Pasir. I know exactly where it is but I can’t be arsed to describe it. Good lah, because it’s always sold out very early. I wouldn’t get to eat it if not for my dear father who makes sure that I get my fill of Batu Pahat favourites when I’m back home, even if I sleep till noon ‘cos I’m a pig like that.

Yay for daddies <3

  1. Is it a dry or curry soup? My mom always made the fish ball curry noodle, not handmade the noodles tho

It’s called Penggaram mee because their father (founder) used to sell it at Jalan Penggaram, the one u mentioned near to Champions shoe store.

There are actually 4 such stalls in BP. The one behind Courts Mammoth belongs to the eldest son, who mastered most of his father’s skills and is always the most crowded.

  3. dils: this one is the dry version. i don’t think soup version is as nice because with the dry version, the noodles can soak up all the awesome sauce and chilli 😀

tigersden: thanks for the information! i learned something new 🙂 so the father was the one who operated the stall near the Champion shoe shop… now I can vaguely remember a face ‘cos I used to accompany my mom when she went there to buy.

  4. Even his eldest son was selling at the stall near Champion shoe shop before bandaraya chasing them and they moved into the corner shop beside Courts Mammoth.

The nearest quality so far was his sister, operating the stall at the corner coffee shop near BP Old Pasar day time. It was just beside the famous cendol shop.

His brother, operating another stall beside old Cheng Siu primary school. Day time. Not that nice though. 🙂

That means there are 5 such stalls selling this, I forgot the one at Jalan Engan, beside the cendol shop.

There is another brother selling it at Glutton Square near to Ah Lam Ice Kacang at night and another sister selling it at Taman Maju during the morning and afternoons.

I prefer the Taman Maju version because its more noodles 😀

    Tigersden,

Which part of Taman Maju? I always go the the one near old Cheng Siu, cos I din know there are so many stalls selling at day time.

I had eaten a few times at the one behind Courts Mammoth. Really nice, but have to wait long time for a plate of noodle….. N the operating hour is short. 6+pm, it is not ready yet; after 9.30pm, bo liao~~ TT

  7. The one selling at the ENG KOK kopitiam at Taman Bukit Pasir is nice, as they still use fish sauce while some others use only soy sauce wh is cheaper. They open at 8.30am, and sold out before noon. Lady boss says they’d prepare the noodles nonstop till sold out, thus I suggest you try if you come to Batu Pahat.. The one at the hawker centre is this man’s brother. His not nice 🙂

  8. Yeap this one was bought from Eng Kok 😉 Thanks ma

  9. Hi guys, anyone can tell me exactly how to get there? I am plannning to try to hunt for it later for lunch. All I know is it’s behind Courts Mammoth? Knowing the shop’s name would help greatly I guess. Thanks
