Lala Chong Seafood Restaurant - Entrance I’ve heard of the famous Lala Chong near the Subang Airport but never had the chance to dine there. They’ve since moved to Kayu Ara Damansara, near to another famous seafood restaurant, Pantai Seafood Kayu Ara whose signboard you can see loud and clear before reaching Lala Chong.

You know how some restaurants serve you appetisers while you wait for your table to fill up? Then you don’t eat it because you don’t like stale peanuts and they charge you for it anyway but you don’t dispute the charge because you’re one of the suckers who never checks the bill?

Or not. In any case, you SHOULD try the mango pickle appetiser at Lala Chong: sweet, sour and spicy. Wonder explosion in your mouth for RM3.

Lala Chong’s signature dish is the “Siong Thong Lala” (RM25 for a large portion): fresh clams in Chinese rice wine, garlic, ginger and cili padi. It was above average, the taste was rather flavourful. However siong thong lala is rather common these days and I dare say that some other places do it better. Like Damansara Village‘s down the road :D Packs more punch.

Crabs go for RM45 per KG. Their most popular style is the Salted Egg Yolk Crabs because cholesterol-laden crustaceans are always yum. I mean, go all the way, right?

Another recommendation is the buttery, cheese, creamy crabs in claypot. They are generous with the sauce which you eat with deep-fried buns (RM1.50 each). The Marmite crabs = not bad. I’m not a fan of anything cooked in Marmite in general but my friends enjoyed it.

For greens, I recommend that you go for the stir-fried kailan and beancurd with angled luffa, aka petola, both RM18 for a large portion.

The deep-fried honey baby squid (RM20) looks and sounds almost cruel; seriously you’re eating BABIES! As in, potential grown-ups. Doesn’t really matter if it’s human or squid or teenage mutant ninja turtles, does it? Well look, if your conscience pricks you at the most inconvenient time (as in after ordering the dish then realising that you are aiding ocean murderers), call me and I’ll take care of business for you. I mean it, because it’s bloody delicious.

Another Lala Chong speciality is the salt-grilled tilapia (RM44). I suppose it takes a while to cook this because it was the last item to be served. Fresh fish from the restaurant tank (don’t think about it), stuffed with garlic and cili padi (perhaps to remove any fishy smell?), generously coated with salt then grilled over a charcoal fire and served with a sauce made of chilli and garlic. It’s a bit sweet and sour too, really good!

For tummy fillers, try the lala mai fun and lala hor fun. I much prefer the latter but if you have loads of people, get both for variety! RM15 for medium portions, I think.

On a previous visit, we had prawns and 3-cup chicken. Not bad but didn’t really stand out. Here are the photos anyway because I took them already.

So is Lala Chong worth a visit or three? Definitely! If you can find it, that is. If Pantai Seafood is on your right hand side, it means you’re on the right road. Drive straight on for… uh, I don’t know, 200 or 300 metres ahead till you see a big yellow Lala Chong signboard on your right. Plenty of parking available, they have both air-conditioned and open areas. Prices are exclusive of 5% government tax and 5% service charge, major credit cards accepted.

  2. ever since they closed the one at the airport, i just go to the one near the church in PJU 1a/5a, Ara Damansara (not far from the Subang airport).

    the fried mantous (sp?) + sweet sour crab = yum. also love their deep fried brinjal with dried shrimp.

    damn. hungry now. thx a lot.

  5. I didn’t find lala chong that great. I went to the Kayu Ara one for lunch and there were so many flies even in the covered air conditioned area.

  8. Carolyn: Ah I know where Siu Siu is! Perhaps it’s a personal thing or they were having a bad day, but I didn’t like the majority of the food we had there. The crabs we got weren’t very fresh. The char siew was good though.

  12. There are two branches. One is the one you went to – Kampung Kayu Ara. The other one is at a quiet shoplot at Damansara Ara, the neighbourhood you access through the junction with the huge Sime Darby Properties sales gallery along the Subang Airport road. Blame the confusion on the fact that people like to name townships Damansara, and now it seems Ara as well…

    I like the Lala Hor Fun. Was like starving, and it was a mother’s day full house i think. The seafood came much, much later. So, naturally the hor fun tasted like magic. When we had it again at the Kayu Ara branch it tasted a bit meh..

    This La La Chong serves absolutely horrible food and expensive too. The kong po mantis prawn was too sweet and soggy. The tilapia is among the worst I ever had. The salted egg crab is tasteless.     Lala Chong used to serve good and reasonably priced food. But now the quality sucks.

    Yes, there are flies. All my family members can vouch for it. Fortunately not in my food.

  21. Wow! seems like the comments after the review is pretty bad. Not sure if i’ll actually enjoy the food there. But hey, got now choice coz my friends picked the restaurant. Should make a deal with them, that if the food sucks, then they’ll pay for my share. Muakakakaka! But honestly, am bracing myself for a sucky meal. Better to have low expectations that high ones. :P

  25. Off the top of my head, I can give 3 reasons:

    1) the chef was having a good day when I ate there at that day

    2) preference of food is subjective

    3) maybe if i go back now, i’d have diff thoughts as my taste buds change.

    DON’T GO TO LALA CHONG! This was the most awful rip-off that we’ve experienced in many years! I went there for a Father’s Day celebration yesterday,and the service was horrendously slow, rude & terrible. Waiters kept ignoring us, we had to remind them to bring the food and drinks many times, and in the end we had to refill our own tea, and get our own drinks, glasses, and cutlery from the service areas. The utensils were icky and dirty. We even cleared our own table!

    The food was bad too. They got a few dishes in our order wrong, and served it so late, that we had finished our meal and were ready to leave by the time they served us the crabs. Oh, and the food was cold.

    All in all, a bad experience, and one that we had to pay through the nose for. I’m not a competitor, just a truly unsatisfied customer. Don’t patronize this lousy place!
