tooth tales

Note: A collage below may be gross to some. You have been warned.

A few moons ago, I was advised to crown one of my molars. To cut the story short, the nerves of the molar where it was crowned got infected recently. Unfortunately the infection was not able to come out by itself (so to speak) because of the crown.

An x-ray of the molar was taken and it was decided by Dentist A that a root canal must be performed. As my molar was crowned by Dentist B, I had to make an appointment with Dentist B for the root canal.

So I did. When I met Dentist B this morning, she told me that she’d looked at my x-ray and thought that a root canal would only have a 50/50 chance of success rate. Something about this molar having 3 roots which makes it difficult etc etc, the problem was somewhere else etc etc. I understand what the problem is, I just don’t feel like elaborating here. I’m sure some of you will appreciate that 😉

My dentist suggested that I have a bridge performed instead. Basically she would extract my molar, then wait for 2 months for the gums to heal then place a crown where the missing tooth will be. I asked damn a lot of questions and told her I’d think about it and get back to her.

I got into my car, drove around the area for 5 minutes and went back to my dentist for her to extract my molar.

She jabbed me 4 times with local anesthetic and wanked out my molar. It was done in less than 5 minutes. This photos was taken right after my molar came out.

Suanie after tooth extraction

See, so happy, thinking it was a piece of cake… obviously still under the effect of the anesthetic lah.

Then the anesthetic started to wear off…

So yeah, I pretty much want to kill the world right now. But thought I’d channel my pain to blogging instead, seeing how I’ve somewhat neglected my blog 😛

Here are some pretty photos of my molar! You see the bitch has a third leg that curves one side and is extra pointy? That motherfucker is the reason why a root canal would only have a 50/50 chance of success. The red bits sticking to the molar are bits of my gums, I think. Sorry, I tried cleaning it as much as I could. The whiter part on top is the RM500 crown, the silver lining is the cement that… uh, cements. Heh.

Suanie's extracted tooth

Feels pretty weird to have a missing tooth. It stopped bleeding lots but I can still taste blood. It’s okay, I’m not squirmish. Gums are painful though but I reckon it’s pretty normal, considering that my molar was so unceremoniously yanked out. Got a ringing in my right ear. Got a massive headache. Got lots of ibuprofen which will probably work better tomorrow. Quite hungry but not in the mood to eat anything. Sister’s maid cooked soup, I suppose that’s my dinner. Had to lock door to my room as Ryan was asking too many questions, expecting lots of answers even though I’ve told him that I’m in pain and cannot speak much. He’s howling outside now as I type.

Oh well.

That’s a mean-looking molar. Reminds me of a kind of chinese fruit my mum used to ‘jeruk.’. thought you are staying solo – non?

  2. haha . i’m still trying to clean it properly but the red bits stick to the tooth. i’m staying over as they’re berholidaying in china with my parents 🙂

  3. heh … your tooth looks alienish. lol. I had my wisdom tooth taken out …. only had 1 huge fat root. Also had the gum stuck to it. took quite a while for it to get cleaned. heheh. My dentist gave me alot of antibiotics before I got my tooth taken out, so it healed very fast, in 3 days! 😀

  4. i’m on antibiotics also! was on a different one before tooth extraction, now on a different one cos the tooth is out already. but uh… define healing fast? i should have some patience, after all it is not even 24 hrs yet! grrr

this is not the wisdom tooth, it’s the one next to the pre-molar

  6. eh … less than 24 hours of course pain lah. doc gave me ponstan for the pain. pop the painkillers and try to sleep as much as you can and finish the antibiotics. i had pain for a day or 2 , but by the 3rd day, no more pain. that’s fast to me. 😛 did your doc give you MC?

  8. kim: it is about a quarter of my entire thumb la… it’s not THAT big 😛

shirley: i didn’t ask for it. reckon i’d be okay. actually it’s not THAT painful… so pretty much manageable. the only thing that i don’t like now is the metallic taste that is ze blooood….

niki: haha actually i thought of you when i wrote the ‘warning’ 😉

  9. Owowowowowowowowowowowowow……….

    Ouch.

Take care, hope it all ends soon!

  10. OUCH!!! Those pics…. make my teeth pain now!!! >.<

  11. Eeeeek… you have my absolute, complete and utter sympathy… almost nothing is worse than tooth pain. I salute your bravery to have it out. Hope the gum heals quickly.

  12. suertes: hehehe thanks!

sotong: but you have nice teeth 😛

half: hehe i’ve been through worse pain than this 🙂 thanks!

  13. Ouch….u brave, brave woman!

  14. I think you mean the tooth was ‘yanked’ out? ;p

Thanks for the reminder that I need to get my ar$e down to the dentist too!

  15. Oh, by the way, a good way to reduce pain is to hold some whiskey or other liquor in the mouth.
It also gets better the more you swallow 🙂

  16. eleen: lmao not really, i was whining a bit with my dentist 😛

julian: yeah but the way she did it, looked and felt like it was being wanked out 😛 not painful anymore

  17. that’s a huge tooth!

  18. dontagree says

Oh my big tooth lady. Please don’t bite me. Somebody’s gonna get hurt real bad..

  19. ky: it is, isn’t it? can’t believe that came out from me. that’s what people say about babies, right?

dontagree: hah i’m sure you have molars as big as that also

  20. I know, we’re not talking about wisdom tooth, but let me share my tooth extracting story. The dentist gave me a blue pill which kind-of knocks you out, then the teeth (yes, 2 wisdom teeth at a time!) was removed. 1 surgically and 1 yanked. After that went home. By dinner time I can eat maggi mee oredi. A little bit of pain with consumption of pain-killer. The next day, a bit little of pain but without painkiller. By 3rd day no pain and no swelling at all.

  21. Goshh… i didn’t know the root can be that long… that’s freaky… make me wanna brush my teeth straight away! Suan, is it painful now when you brush your other teeth, will the gum bleed if ‘kena’ the toothbrush? And what are you gonna do with this molar?

  22. Oww very painful.. don’t worry too much, a new tooth will grow back.. won’t it? hehe

  23. in: wow .. really? my wisdom teeth are intact.. but i’ve always heard horror stories of wisdom teeth extractions… but you make it seem like it’s not much to worry about! hmmm

SooPey: it’s not just the long part that’s freaky, it’s the crooked part! I wonder how the dentist managed to extract that without totally screwing up my gums, hahaha! Gum where the tooth was still bleeds a little but very very little. Nothing to worry about, it’s normal. I’ll probably throw the molar away, already took photos of it 😉

    Jeff: I’m 28 years old, not 8 … so it won’t grow back 😛

  24. ViciousKitty74 says

Poor baby! I cracked two molars and extracted one long time ago. The 2nd one I am still keeping, because I dont think any crowning will save it. Will probably have to take it out next month too. Must plan my medical leave…..

  25. GAAAAH DISGUSTINGGG

  26. Oh,… u gonna throw it away ah? Make sure you throw it to the rooftop ah! Lol, that’s a housewives’ tale lah… somehow, i was made into believing this since i was a kid, someone instill this thought into me “Gigi bawah, buang atas bumbung, Gigi atas, buang bawah katil” Make sense ah? Not really, i know… and i wonder if i climb up to the rooftop, how many teeth will i find there, damn! 😛

  27. Whoa! Boo ya! That’s one mighty big tooth. When I had mine extracted, the Dentist had his leg on the chair to brace himself. I heard it snap. Twice! But could not feel anything due to the ubat bius. Surreal!

Hurt like hell for the next 4-5 days. All I could eat was porridge that was cold.

  28. Every case is diferent and unique but for what you tell in your story it seems like laziness, I don’t want to be hard but now I feel indignation.
Probably it has something to do with the legal issues that in US surround the medical practice, in that way a can’t put my self in the shoes neither the patient nor the dentist, In my country the legal issues are not such a big headache still.
Anyway, it must be known that de canal treatment are a very safe procedure with a succes rate of 95-98% when are well performed.
I hope, that I never haver to be in the position of pulling out such a beautifull organ (tooth) of a what it seems to be a perfect mouth, if there are other choises to try.
