Believe me, I once tried out the cheapskate route in Kuta and you really get what you pay for. Unless you stay in relatively new (and more expensive) hotels. and yes, don't expect to have your room sound-proof! It's ok to go for much cheaper digs elsewhere in Bali, eg. Ubud losmens. Cheaper, AND cleaner. And mmmm... bacon... squirrel likes bacon. Indonesia's great in that sense. You can easily get real bacon/pork in Jakarta. you did well re: Kuta accomodation.
