Sorry for being a cynic. Earth Hour is first and foremost, a publicity stunt and not a bad one at that. I sincerely applaud all the raising awareness measurements pimped by WWF. So now, I have people on Facebook, Twitter and e-mails notifying all and sundry to switch off all electricity for an hour this Saturday. As if my sister is not doing a great job already by constantly berating me for leaving my notebook on… a lot.
(But I was running some programmes and doing stuff, I swear!)
Then two things caused me to roll my eyes till they almost popped out. One: an American female singer going on about supporting Earth Hour 2009 — her website will be blacked out for a whole hour… BUT during that hour, visitors to her website will be able to listen to her songs streamed on-line. Seriously, wtf?
Two: this shop somewhere sent out mass-emails to promote the fact that they would be switching off their lights in support of Earth Hour 2009. But they are still open for business! Do come to said shop, support said campaign. Attached to the e-mail are three damn big ass images.
I am probably not helping by this blog post. I draw comfort from not pretending to be something that I’m not. As always, feel free to do what you have to do if that makes you feel better

I’ll turn off my machine that keeps me alive whilst I sleep for one hour … um … on second thoughts … I’ll just go to a hospital and turn off someone else’s machine. They can save the earth via proxy for me.
Actually, if the banks turn off their alarm systems for an hour …

I find these campaigns very strange too. Great ideas executed in the oddest ways! But as you said, whatever makes one feel better!
If the earth is gonna blow up, its gonna blow up, regardless of how many hours you shut off your lights:P

I agree with you. Rather than promoting something that lasts just for 1 hour (helps la, but how teeny tiny only?), promote la greener living.
If ppl are serious about saving the environment, start with air pollution la. You don’t see anyone turning off their car engine (save money also somore) when they’re “parking” on the highways during peak hours.

I agree that the local Earth Hour commercials are putrid.
but i think it’s still a good way to at least raise some kind of awareness (not matter how tiny it is) on energy consumption *shrug*.
We’re following Earth Hour.. Here’s our family plan:
Everything in our home will get powered up. All lights ON. All hot tub pumps ON full power, The oven ON, All televisions ON, Toaster – ON (and constantly reset), Furnace fan turned up to High, All Radios ON, All cellphones charging.
Also – My 17 year old son has written a program to have all the computers in the house (7) run a complex CPU intensive algorithm.
We appreciate human kinds accomplishments and have researched GW – it is unfounded.
That should do it.
