talk about food
I doubt anyone has any illusions about the current economic situation. It still hits you hard though, and leaves you gasping for breath wondering what the fuck happened to the cost of things. Last week I had to go to my mechanic in Bangsar, and decided to have lunch at a coffee shop. A small bowl of fish paste noodles (with 4 pieces of fish paste, three deep-fried tofu skin, two or three strands of lettuce, some dried seaweed) cost me RM 4.80. A standard glass serving of Nescafe ais cost RM 2. I ate very slowly as to savour every single cent.
Earlier at lunch, I had a peek at the new price list for the Chinese coffee shop operating near where my office is. A small bowl of wantan mee now costs RM 4. I know we should stop thinking about the ‘good ol’ days’, but you can’t help reminiscing a little, especially when the good ol’ days charged you RM 1.20 for a serving of wantan noodles. Thankfully the cheapest (albeit most unhealthy) food, the roti kosong is still priced at 80 sen per piece. I wonder for how long, though.
Have you taken a look at this year’s Ramadan buka puasa buffet offerings in town? Just for fucks, my boss checked out the one at Eastin Hotel. RM 105.80 nett per adult my friends, for a 4-star hotel. What do they cook their rendang with, kobe beef?! How is it possible for one to eat RM 105.80 worth of dinner? If it’s lobsters and oysters and gigantic prawns and truffles all the way, I can understand lah. Somehow I don’t think it’s going to be any of those babies.
Speaking of differences in food, said boss and I were in his car the other day. We passed by this Chinese restaurant and they had this huge banner advertising poon choi. I remarked to him that a dish like that could come up to about RM 500 (less for less stuff and at cheaper digs, more for more stuff) and he was understandably stunned.
We got to talking about Chinese food, Malay food, Western food and Indian food. The Chinese prize things like sharks’ fin, abalone, sea cucumber etc, which essentially have no taste nor flavour of its own unless you braise, boil or double boil them in assorted broth to second death. Bird’s nest? I don’t mind buying it as a present for someone whom I know would consume it, but I’d rather swallow Michael Jackson’s spit (and I don’t want to, really) than eat bird’s nest.
I guess I slightly digress. In my memory, Malay cuisine has always been a simple affair. I don’t recall this or that Sultan having a big feast with hundreds of dishes. The food is delicious with a lot of herbs and spices, but the ingredients are mostly simple and easily accessible. One of Lebai Malang’s two options was gulai daging kerbau. Was it pucuk paku that Raja Bersiong was eating before he turned vampire-ish?
I don’t know, maybe you have a better idea about whatever I am on about. Share, please?
Last one on munchies: look at what Kim and her boo got me from UK
Thanks babe!
You know, I have this insane craving for grilled eggplants in spicy tomato sauce with lots of garlic and olive oil. Moussandra and La Cocina are a-calling…

wagyu beef would taste horrible in rendang.
abalone does have its own distinctive taste.

OMG. Walkers Chips! OMG! OMG! Walkers Chips! …..
I love em to death, especially the salt and vinegar one. Sangat berguna apabila loya. Hehehe…
Malay food are simple, but the seafood adalah mahal kan. Unless there is some roasted veal there, I won’t be paying for a buffet meal of RM50 and higher.Who would paid for such prices time susah-susah ni. Of course the rich. Le sigh. Thank God for Corporation willingness to dole out money for these buffets. Huhu…
Thus I can spare a small budget for rm30 and below buffets siesta. 2 years back, rm50 buffet is Ok to me. Now… I don’t think so I can spare that much.
Lettuce. Ice berg lettuce.
i can buy all the walkers crisps i want.

Ew to the pork scratchings though.

reuben: DO NOT INSULT THE PORK SCRATCHINGS! 0_0
Pork scratchings? Hmm…I’ve never seen that around. Looks mighty interesting though.
Yeah, I agree about the price consciousness nowadays, I’m getting it too. I used to not even look at the prices before ordering but with the petrol price increase and cigarettes price increase, I’m starting to feel the pinch too.
RM 200+ for dinner used to be the norm for me (when I was earning salary and side income which do not come from blogs, if you catch my drift) but I balk at a RM 130 bill nowadays. I have even resorted to drinking local liquor priced at RM 5.
Oh well, hard times. Beggars can’t be choosers and all that.
Those expensive Chinese food are actually bad habits come from poor people trying to imitate “the life of rich towkay”. In the old day, rich people use exotic and rare food to show off their wealth. Just bet if the old day China has watch like Patek Phillipe, then rich people will show off that as well.
20 years ago, Malay race already “learn” this show off from Chinese and Indian. If you still remember those story of people getting loans from the government, buy Mercedes Benz first before putting on business. And billions burned in the process.
Crisps are not food.
bloody farking hell… I forgot Walker’s had Prawn Cocktail flavours. (sabar, sabar… bulan puasa)
Raja Bersiong ate kangkung right? or was that Hang Tuah and the Chinese Emperor?
Ah, another Moussandra fan! I have a loyalty card (Number 0016!) dating back to the first time that I discovered the place when we were briefly living in Lot 10. Still get my free chicken liver pate, and 15% off everything.
Reminds me – haven’t been in a while, definitely must go again soon! Y deserves a treat
ront: so you really don’t want to know what i had for breakfast?
dils: heahehae cheese and onion tastes good also! the worchester sauce was a bit weird though. seafood is same price everywhere what. prawns, fish, sotong… the chinese just go the extra mile to get rather unobtainable stuff
dabs: nice
reuben: show off
kellster: heahhae i love them all!
kim: heaehae i’ll try that soon
HB: apparently it’s just like our ju yao char. hah! I can’t afford RM200+ dinners mate
what does it taste like
moo_t: it’s just interesting that they tend to showcase their wealth by eating all these weird stuff
GS: it is so
izad: nyeh nyeh nyeh
LT: oh yah kangkung. don’t know, can’t find anything on-line about what he ate now
Grant: heh my sister took me there many years ago. it was very delicious, and they had this in-house newsletter thing that i thought was the funniest thing ever!
Damn, is it coincident or what. Now Patek Phillipe out in head line, towards the tempe bugger.
Walkers crisps? They’re ok… we have much nicer crisps though
I too sometimes catch myself hankering for the good old days of cheap and cheerful food. These days don’t seem to be cheap or cheerful. I got lazy the other night and watched a program by a guy who wanted to make the country’s worst sausage. Sausages are disgusting anyway, but when you saw what went into the ‘typical’ sausage, well… it was grotesque. Anyway, for part of the program, he showed the ingredients list to a nutritionist who pointed out that the ingredients had *negative* nutrional value – not only did you consume nutrients to digest the stuff, you got nothing back… Anyway, I have gone right off processed/manufactured food. Put it this way, you’re rather eat frog than sausage, if you knew what went into one (clue: not much meat…). Erm, have no idea why I am relating this except that you are an exceptional food blogger and, er… I still can’t think what I was thinking of when I was thinking of t that.
Oh yeah, the good ol’ days. I actually remember being able to buy a chocolate swiss roll – standard food item in the UK – for 36p when I was at school. We even had a Chocolate Swiss Roll club we liked them so much. Today, you pay over a pound, and they aren’t as good either (or I have just developed adult taste?). Prices have tripled at least, since them good ol’ days, and they just don’t make ‘em like they used to.
Anyway, look out for Seabrooks crisps – much nicer! And Smith’s Square Crisps
And now I’m off to find out what a Ringit is worth in real money
moo_t: heaheha check this out:

doomlord: but sausages taste awesome. i’ve always heard about the disgusting stuff they use to make sausages, but have yet to come across a documentary . any links?
but you are wrong there. i will not eat frogs, even if it’s the last edible thing on earth and crucial for my survival. i’m serious.
Can i have the pork scratching please?
no
So… that’s what a ringits worth? How do you guys buy anything???
<3
I will look for a link, Suan, on the sausage thing… if I only come up with pr0n, will you mind?
Here you are: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=8AoeUWf_sYA and also http://www.bbc.co.uk/mischief/hot_topics/food.shtml
The Youtube link shows pretty much what goes into them… believe it or not that stuff is normal for processed meat products, including burgers, pies etc… blech!
