you’re never too old for lactose intolerance

My car wouldn’t start this morning. So I had to borrow my sister’s car to go to my mechanic, have one of them come back to my house with me to get my car, then go back to the shop again. Since I live somewhere near 1U and my mechanic is in Bangsar, you can imagine how joyous I was from all the driving around.

Not to mention my car stalled no less than 3 times on the road.

Turns out that something was loose with my battery. I had it replaced with a new one sometime last month, so they didn’t charge me anything for tweaking it a bit. Of course they wouldn’t dare lah. But when these things happen, I am always so glad that they do not happen on Sundays. You can hardly get anything fixed on a Sunday without having to sell off your limbs.

I hate red ants.

Fiery Angry Red Ants

Die, you motherfuckers.

As many of you know, one of my indulgences is Starbucks’ ice latte. Well, I hereby officially announce that I am cutting down on the damn drink. After nearly 27 years of existence, I have finally come to terms that I may have a slight case of lactose intolerance. Got pretty acquainted with my toilet last night.

Actually I didn’t even think of the possibility. I am after all, (almost) hardy and (rather) sturdy, and I don’t seem to be allergic to anything. Peanuts and shellfish, come to mama.

So one evening I was at Starbucks with Richard and meimei, and I told them that I had to rush home because I needed to do #2. I offhandedly mentioned that I sometimes have to urgently go after a cuppa. Meimei looked at me in a daze, and said, “Err… doesn’t that tell you that you have lactose intolerance?!”

Since then I’ve not been able to get the thought out of my head. So there you go.

    ‘I hate red ants. ‘

That’s so racist picking on the red ones!!! :-)

‘I have finally come to terms that I may have a slight case of lactose intolerance.’

Cut it out of your diet, then wait about two weeks to see if you are fine. If you are, then slowly reintroduce it into your diet little by little.

Actually, it sounds more like normal caffine effects on the body. I have to go a lot if I have any caffine, but it also affects people who drink lots of coffee (and they often don’t realise it). So, if you are still drinking the same amount of coffee and after two weeks it’s still occurring, then guess what, it isn’t lactose! If that happens, then cut down on caffine.

pixie: yah. i got bitten by one of the motherfuckers in the photo on saturday, and it still itches like crazy

Wait till you have to dive on top of a red ants’ nest, taking fire, all alone and behind enemy lines.

Yes I’m sure you’ll never experience that in this lifetime Suan. Only one of them bit you ? Awww =P

  5. Suanie, 5. September 2008, 14:19

Suggest to Starbucks to use Coffee-Mate instead lor or other non-dairy lactose-free alternatives.

Red ant bites : wash with soap, the alkaline should relieve most the the pain and itchiness.

At home, I replace milk with honey. With a cheap branded RM 80 blender, you can always make ice blended drink at home, minus the mood ;)

lol Yeah, I was thinking of exactly the Black Hole thing. :-)

Like I said, go without milk for two weeks. It should answer your question about the milk. :-)

    Black hole sounds dirty…

  14. Dean Arif, 6. September 2008, 2:23

Oii!!! Leave them red ants alone!

Hey, I should introduce you to my trustworthy mechanic in Kota Damansara, so you need not drive all the way to Bangsar!

  15. Dabido, 6. September 2008, 7:36

Anttyk - You can always get it bleached! :-)

  16. Huai Bin, 7. September 2008, 0:53

It does happen. I used to be able to drink a 5 liter bottle of milk a day in Melbourne, but lately, whenever I have even a glass of milk, I get lactose intolerant. I feel sick and I get diarrhea.

  17. Grant S., 8. September 2008, 9:23

Agree with Dabido - it is far more likely to be the irritant effect of caffeine on the stomach, than lactose intolerance, unless you are exhibiting other forms of reaction to milk or lactose containing products.
A certain spouse used to have an instant reaction to coffee in any form, and didn’t drink it for 20+ years. Now she has to have her Latte every morning! Lucky she owns a cafe really! ;)
Just watch out for those wonderful caffeine withdrawal symptoms - snarl!

  18. Grant S., 8. September 2008, 9:25

Oh, and you could drink *pints* of Nescafe with almost zero effect - no damn caffeine in that piss-poor substitute for a beverage! ;)

  19. whimsicaljottings, 8. September 2008, 19:16

Dont drink Starbucks = save A LOT of money.

eh, Dean Arif, yr mechanic in KD where ah? Got many around there, but all also cutthroat.

  20. Christy, 9. September 2008, 10:20

I agree with the mechanics overcharging part on weekends (particularly Sundays and public holidays!)
And those red ants, hmmm….they are really freaky when they get all over you (shudders at thought)

And don’t worry about lactose intolerance, I am one of the highly sensitive people around and I can tell you more than a thing or two about all these allergies stuffs:p

By the way, nice blog you have and nice to meet you!~

  21. Suanie, 9. September 2008, 15:58

    anttyk: hah you racist! :P

dean: but they bite me! kota damansara and bangsar same distance to me lah

HB: but maybe it’s because the milk here is different than the milk in oz. which it is

grant: you know, i think it may just be the coffee. had a lil experiment the other day. btw soy with coffee just plain sucks

    whimsicaljottings: heh already controlled ;)

christy: not to mention locksmiths. i should learn how to pick locks. thanks for the kind words :)
