Rebecca reappeared and told Dr. Alex that she was pregnant (with his kid). Dr. Izzie performed the pregnancy test, and the results came out negative. Unfortunately she could not inform Rebecca as it was almost impossible to get in touch with her. Alex, under the impression that Rebecca was pregnant, began to work extra hard to save for a house for the two of them and rebuffed Izzie when she tried to slow him down, mistaking her caution for disapproval.

Despite Alex being Izzie’s good buddy, Izzie could not tell Alex that Rebecca was in fact not pregnant due to the doctor-patient confidentiality issue. She did think about breaching the confidentiality, but decided not to because it was unprofessional and just not done. So she had to stay by the sideline while watching Alex rushing about like a mad person trying to do it all, deliriously happy and under the impression that he was about to be a father.

Much later, Izzie managed to get hold of Rebecca, and informed her that she was not pregnant. Rebecca (for other reasons) refuse to accept the test results, and allowed Izzie to tell Alex about the results. However Alex did not believe Izzie and told her to stay out of his life.

Suppose that in another situation where there’s no such thing as a doctor-patient confidentiality, but you are still at the sideline watching your good buddy working him or herself up in a situation where he or she is delusional about something or someone. How you know that s/he is delusional is because you have such a lot of information regarding that something or someone.

On one hand it is not your place to say anything because everyone is a grown up and you trust that people know what they are doing. On the other hand, you can’t stand seeing your good buddy in that kind of situation being made to look like a fool because… well, you are good buddies.

What would you do?
