suanie ate raw fish for the first time!
Those who know me know that I am not one for raw fish and meat. That is why Japanese buffets are wasted on me, and I am usually not that excited whenever anyone suggests eating at a Japanese restaurant. But I still go lah, because there are other things to eat mah. Besides more often than not, it’s the company that matters
KY got invited to a food review thingy at Rakuzen, and he ajak-ed me along. Haaaaaaaaaaahhh apparently NOT because I am his back-up plan
Anyway we ate at Rakuzen a couple of weeks ago with some other noobs, so I was happy to go along because the food I had was pretty good.
The night before, I mentally prepped myself to consume at least ONE piece of raw salmon. As I keep telling people, it’s more of a psychological barrier than anything else; it took me a couple of years before I could eat medium steak, and more than that before I could stomach ebiko. So forgive me if I seem overly spirited about this whole eating raw fish thingy, but it was a pretty historic thing for me!

Chef Fai and his offerings
We were presented with 4 dishes — sashimi moraiwase, sashimi salad, dragon roll and tempura. Apparently the sashimi moraiwase is really worth the money because the cost of the ingredients isn’t cheap, and the profit is only marginal. KY enjoyed it tremendously, as he wolfed down most of the stuff on the plate.

A sinfully delicious dragon roll
My favourite has to be the dragon roll — not only because it was something that I could consume without over analysing, but because it was truly and satisfyingly delicious. I don’t remember the exact price, but it’s worth it.

A beautiful sashimi salad before the sauce is poured
The sashimi salad was rather awesome. Again I don’t recall the price, but I remember it being worth the money as they throw in bits and pieces of tuna, squid, lobster meat and salmon alongside the fresh and crunchy greens, topped with a couple fat slices of raw salmon. Okay so maybe my first experience of eating raw fish happened at the first time I ate at Rakuzen where we had the same dish, but that doesn’t count because I didn’t know I was eating raw stuff.

Hello there!
After a while, I psyched myself up and ate the little bugger in the photo above. As I chewed it for the first time, I felt a bit sick in my stomach, but quickly reminded myself that it was all in the head. Which it was, because it didn’t taste half bad as I’d imagined. Everyone around me always gushes about raw salmon being creamy and buttery… I even had a second (small) piece later on just to make sure that I remember the taste and feeling.
Okay lah, I am still alive, didn’t have indigestion or anything. But it’s not something I’d order for myself in the future lor. Which is a good thing, because this stuff ain’t cheap

Just kidding, I pig on them a lot too. Just make sure to take zentel/deworming pills every 6 months.

Congrats on your achievement, though
damn .. nice pictures .. makes me feel like eatin sashimi now.. except i just came back from having sushi for lunch..
Congrats tehsuan! Raw fish FTW!
I too can’t take raw fish…..when i eat yee sang, I will pick out all the raw fish. (I don’t care even if the fish is salmon….) I tried to be brave and ate the yee sang raw fish a couple years ago. It wasn’t that bad, because i didn’t really taste it….so I thought ‘okaylah, raw fish not so bad’. During the next yee sang session, i ate it again, this time I really tasted it and felt nauseous. That’s the last time i ever ate raw fish! Even the best sashimi in the world will not convert me!
YOU ATE NEMO!!!!!!
I love their sashimi salad! Its the best in town!
You make me drooling lah!!!
first wife i’m so proud you!
just the other day u confessed your weakness and now you’ve conquered it… FTW!
Man, I thought I was the only freak who doesn’t consume any kind of raw fish. When people sing praises about how fresh the sashimis are at certain Jap restaurants, I usually go, Are the green tea ice cream any good? -_-
I like raw meat though(mid-rare steak…..YUM), but raw fish/seafood? They’re supposed to be cooked, y’all.
Wow… just reading your post and looking at the pictures makes my stomach queasy. Raw fish and my innards do not agree.
hungry~
The food look so yummy~
Sashimi – my absolute favourite. Eat it everywhere I go, and we eat Japanese at least once a week, despite the expense. You can tell when the raw fish is fresh, fresh fish should have zero odour, and give me a plate of maguro, white or red (tuna) every day and I would never complain.
Even got used (eventually) to eating raw squid, although that took a while longer due to the chewiness.
Raw Sea-bass, mackerel, tuna, salmon, squid/octopus = Awesome!!!
I love Rakuzen too! Dragon roll is priced at RM28 (if the price did not hike). We usually go for this and/or spider roll and/or stamina roll. Equally good! Should try that next time.
I found a new place that offers good japanese food at an affordable price. Sushi Zanmai, 3rd floor in Gardens (Robinsons side). The one in New Wing, 1Utama is opening soon. Check them out
Is this the one in Hartamas? LOL, anyway, I like eating raw or medium cooked stuff, in fact, I prefer it that way, since most of the original flavour is preserved. Since you’ve ate raw salmon once, you’d probably try it again and maybe grow to love it!
Ooi. I thought only reading KY’s blog will make hungry and spend money on good food. Why la you devil.
