movies i’ve watched recently

Still no mood. Not emo, no auntie visit, nothing happened (which was precisely the problem). Okay maybe I should blog about the upcoming elections, but that requires a lot of words, and I am not in the mood, so…

Instead of vomiting endless senseless words and words and words, allow me to share with you my thoughts on some of the movies I’ve seen recently.

Juno (IMDB page):
Must watch. Overly snarky dialogue, storyline not altogether groundbreaking, but the acting more than makes up for it. Must watch.

Vantage Point (IMDB page):
I liked it.

The Wedding Date (IMDB page):
Love Debra Messing. Hate this movie.

Eastern Promises (IMDB page):
I’m beginning to really appreciate Viggo Mortensen, especially after ‘A History of Violence’. Really enjoyed watching his butt seemingly stoic demeanour which enables him to jaggedly slit your throat without compassion. Whoa.

Sweeney Todd 2007 (IMDB page):
I think I would have enjoyed it more if it wasn’t a semi-musical. Love all the actors/actresses in it, couldn’t stand everything else.

Casablanca (IMDB page):
Never too late to pick up on a classic :) Now I understand why ‘Casablanca’ is consistently placed in the Top 5 of every other ‘best movies ever’ lists out there. Wonderful, most wonderful. And now I have an unhealthy obsession with Bogart. And black & white.

Added:

Rambo IV (IMDB page):
Confession: This was the first Rambo movie I’d watched in full. All action heroes should be like Sly; doesn’t say a lot, just kill kill kill! Apart from the bit where the Americans save warring Third World countries from themselves, the rest was pretty fine. Though not something I’d watch again until a year later, at least.

Shoot ‘Em Up (IMDB page):
Clive Owen and Paul Giamatti can do no wrong. Except for the bit in ‘Sideways’ where Giamatti constantly bitched about merlot. I like merlot. For everything else, see what I wrote about Rambo and take out the Americans bit.

The Notebook (IMDB page):
It was so moving that I cried. That was why I emo-ed for a couple of days.

I can leand you THE BIG SLEEP starring BOgart on video TAPE [yes, I have it on tape].
Definitely one of my favourite all time movies.

    Ric in Casablanca:
You played it for her, you can play it for me.
Play it, Sam. Play it again.

[As opposed to the misquoted version of 'Play it again, Sam']

psst where did u get juno?

  3. suertes, 25. February 2008, 12:06

“Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world, she walks into mine.” I so prefer this line from Casablanca to the ‘play it again’ one. So much more drama, and there’s booze involved in it as well.

  4. Suanie, 25. February 2008, 12:20

Dabs: i guess you could, but I don’t have a VHS player anymore. I know about the misquoted line :P but that’s not my fav

kim: from my ever-obliging relative, uncle ho

suertes: that’s my favourite! paraphrased and adapted many times, but the most memorable to me was a scene in Sex & The City; when Charlotte and Harry reunited at a synagogue, and he said, “Out of all the synagogues in all the cities, you had to walk into mine.”

    Another favourite conversation is this:

Mr. Leuchtag: Liebchen - sweetnessheart, what watch?
    Mrs. Leuchtag: Ten watch.
    Mr. Leuchtag: Such much?
Carl: Hm. You will get along beautiful in America

Here’s looking at you kid. Heard Juno was good, something like Little Miss Sunshine. Out of the rest only really interested in Vantage Point.

  6. pinkpau, 25. February 2008, 13:37

  7. eyeris, 25. February 2008, 13:52

I wanna watch Juno too. :( watch There Will Be Blood at your own risk. It needs A LOT of concentrated tomato. er… concentration.

  8. fireangel, 25. February 2008, 15:34

I want to watch Juno also! And Sweeney!

Not Casablanca though… black and white movies give me a headache and an uncontrollable urge to want to stab my eyeball with a spoon.

  9. Grant S., 25. February 2008, 19:43

Must watches for me and Y. are currently: Juno, The Diving Bell & The Butterfly, There will be blood, and My Blueberry Nights - Kar Wai Wong’s first English language movie - I’ve been a big fan of his work since Chungking Express . Almost Kubrickian lighting use & tone.
Did I ever tell you I worked briefly with Stanley Kubrick? ;)

  10. Dabido(Teflon), 25. February 2008, 20:28

Grant S - I’m impressed. I think I own almost all of Kubriks work on DVD … as well as having adapted the wordpress Kubrik template to make my own. :-)

  11. wan2, 25. February 2008, 21:43

There was strangely very little hype about My Blueberry Nights when it came out in Sg, I’m still looking for it. I cried during the Notebook too, was watching with my mom and felt so embarrassed. =P

Shoot ‘Em Up is just bloody fantastic, and you forgot about Monica Bellucci!

  12. suertes, 25. February 2008, 21:50

FA, I actually watched Casablanca in glorious colour. That was the version that they showed on TV3 on the Saturday Classics slot, many years ago.

  13. Grant S., 25. February 2008, 21:59

Dabido - remind me to tell you the story one day, you must be the only one I haven’t told yet ;)
Yes, I had a fascinating hours meeting one-on-one with Stanley, and actually had one of my ideas used in the last film “Eyes Wide Shut.” I was the House Manager of the building that they used for the last scene, so I had to work with Stanley, Jan Harlen etc.
I have pictures of him with me, an autograph (with another long story behind it), and I found him to be a nice, but piercingly intelligent man. One hour was enough to drain me of ideas lol!

bah… the vantage point sucks… I nearly vomited because the shot taken is super eye confusing.

  15. Reta, 26. February 2008, 1:23

i want to watch science of sleep. I think you’ll like Wicker Park if you emo over The Notebook. I find Malaysians’ humour a bit odd when everyone in the cinema started laughing off to the numerous rewind angled scenes in Vantage Point. Very funny meh?

  16. pinkpau, 26. February 2008, 3:09

    reta : WICKER PARK!!!!!! <3 <3 <3

  17. Z, 26. February 2008, 10:24

I’ve been pushing Eastern Promises on basically, everyfreakingone. Naomi Watts was a bit of a drag for the film, but she plays off well against Mr. Mortensen.

I still don’t have the heart(or mindset) to pick up No Country For Old Men or There Will Be Blood, but will probably be watching Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead(wtf with the long ass name) this weekend.

  18. Reta, 26. February 2008, 11:35

pinkpau: did u bawl when coldplay’s ‘the scientist’ was played at the ending? I know i did!!

  19. Hallaj, 26. February 2008, 12:37

Eastern promises was a bit silly for me. I can watch it until the end, surely but I couldnt watch it again for the 2nd time. The rest are okay I guess..

  20. Pokku, 26. February 2008, 21:39

You can get the script of Juno online. Its on pdf. It is not often you can get a copy of the Oscar-winning script.
    Other DVD I would recommend:
    Run Fatboy Run
    Hunting Party
    Rendition
    Jane Austen Book Club

  21. Suanie, 28. February 2008, 13:42

ST: yeah i should really finish watching the remaining 40 mins on LMS

pinkpau: i thought it was nice, but for some reason, it didn’t get me thinking on anything. maybe i should watch it again

eyeris: haehaheaheha don’t like daniel day lewis, and after your review, i don’t think i want to watch it

    fa: hmm

grant: now that you mentioned it… :P

wan2: heheh okay monica bellucci brought a whole new level of mammaries in that movie

suertes: some things should not be changed

    peg: hehe it’s teh good!

reta: wicker park sounds a bit like the talented mr ripley, heh. must laugh mah, can’t be too serious :P

z: don’t really like her, heh. any movie praised till high heavens by the oscars is bound to be a drag to watch. need too much concentration. that’s why i tend to avoid them these days

hallaj: but the russian mafia bits were real!

    pokku: noted :D

  22. Mae, 29. April 2008, 14:17

  23. Suanie, 30. April 2008, 1:16
