Growing up, I always thought that Barisan Nasional was the be all and end all. In school we were ‘encouraged’ to buy newspapers to aid our language skills, as well as to keep ourselves up with current events. As I was in a national school for my primary and secondary education, and had so protested at being sent to ‘night school’ to learn Chinese, I never did learn my ancestors’ language beyond recognising the characters of my Chinese name. Hence my choice of newspapers were (and still is) limited to Malay and English medium newspapers. That’s my excuse for the first sentence of this paragraph.

Growing up, I thought that the Opposition were the scums of the earth. How could they possibly disagree with the obviously wise and sensible decisions made by our ruling government? My impression was that they argued for the sake of arguing, insistent on nit-picking and not focusing on the issues at hand. And when they were rebuked by any BN party members (and rightfully so, I thought), they’d launch into a tirade of name-calling and unreasonable debate. Such lowlifes were blinded by their selfish political ambitions, and could not see the pot of gold at the end of the BN rainbow.

Who else was evil? Hmmm.. oh yes, Singapore, those cheating bastards of a minuscule dot they call country. Our Sejarah teacher told us that Lee Kuan Yew successfully manipulated Tunku Abdul Rahman into accepting Singapore as part of Malaysia, so they would be safe from the communists. Tunku being the kind-hearted prince accepted. Then two years later, Lee unceremoniously ditched us. Con men of the highest order — who the heck do they think they are? Hey, Malaysia can crush Singapore if we wanted to, you know?! Whose country is bigger? Whose population is larger? Which country has more natural resources? If you Singaporeans think you are so friggin’ great, then we dare you to stop buying water from us! Then your people will die of thirst! Bwahahah! Arrogant SOBs.

(I was a very young 15. I probably didn’t really mean it anyway — Channel 8 was too engaging.)

Should I talk about Jews, otherwise known to me as orang Yahudi? Didn’t know a Jew, didn’t really know what constitutes a Jew except that they are this bunch of evil bastards out to dominate the world, and they must be stopped at all cost. And the only person brave enough to stand up and speak against their wickedness was our prime minister (at that time). What did the Jews do? Hell if I know. They were just despicable being them.

Western powers are akin to the devil. They are so hell-bent on polluting the rest of the world with their degenerate culture and deviant ways. Everything about them is so sickeningly evil that their ways must be wrong. Change of power every other term? Must be political instability. Look at Malaysia! We have had the same ruling government since Malaya! And they were put at the helm of the country by Malaysians! If that doesn’t spell democracy and happiness that the ruling government’s doing a great job, then you must be a Jewish American.

Then in 1997 I discovered the Internet. And everything was never the same.
