neil labute’s ‘wrecks’ starring patrick teoh

Patrick Teoh in WRECKS

I know I put this under ‘Reviews’, but I came to the conclusion that I cannot, for the life of me write a proper review detailing what I really want to say without ruining your experience of watching the show. As I write this, there are only two more shows left, and I must urge you to catch them if you can. Like it, hate it or left perturbed by it, you will appreciate my asking you to catch WRECKS, a play written by Neil Labute, being staged at KL Pac, starring the one and only Patrick Teoh. If you need more clues as to why this play will be one neuron short of a mind-fuck, this staging is directed by Gavin Yap, and we know that at this point of his life he wouldn’t touch anything unless it’s dark, sinister and totally disturbing.

Trust me, you will appreciate it.

I’ll blog more after the show ends tomorrow. Until then here’s the plug:

Meet Edward: loving father, successful businessman, grieving widower. At his wife’s funeral, he candidly shares his story with us, of the life he’s lived, and the woman he lived his life for. Director Gavin Yap and veteran actor Patrick Teoh collaborate once again to introduce Malaysian audiences to acclaimed playwright Neil LaBute’s affecting and poignant exploration of the human soul.

TWO MORE SHOWS LEFT!!!!!
8.30 p.m. shows. 21 and 22 November (Wednesday and Thursday), at KL PAC. Call for your tickets!! KL PAC 03-4047 9000 or TAS @ BSC 03-2094 9400.

heineken ‘life below zero’ - beer served exxxtra cold.. brrrrr!

A few of us were invited to the Heineken Life Below Zero launch last Monday at Velvet Underground @ Zouk KL. So off we went, and despite it being a week night (old bones, not so happening anymore) we had lots of fun! Well to be fair anything that involves free (good) alcohol is fun ;)

We were sent a ’survival kit’ that turned out to be a scarf…

Heineken Extra Cold - Something in the mail
… for the cold nights…

Me and Fireangel reached the venue on time(she drove, omg history was made) and we lepak outside waited around a bit for the other noobs to arrive. They were serving Heineken on tap for those waiting for the launch to commence. A short while later we were ushered into Velvet Underground where the event would take place.

Bottles of Heineken stuck in ice! Someone rescue my babies!!!

Joey G emceed (he’s everywhere, isn’t he?), got a few Heineken people to get on stage to say a few words. Up until then I had no idea what the launch was about. We were then shown a presentation that made all the sense in the world (to me).

If you are a solid beer drinker, piss warm beer be your kryptonite. Conventional coolers chill your beer from 4 to 6 degree Celsius, and sometimes they don’t stay cold for very long. I don’t think I really need to explain this bit, unless you are allergic to alcohol or you are under 18 years of age, then you shouldn’t really be learning about all these things until you grow up :D

My babies got rescued after all!

So Heineken got this really cool idea to obtain some sub-zero coolers, which will chill your beer at an impressive -2 degree Celsius. By now most of the major pubs and clubs in KL/PJ have the sub-zero coolers installed for Heineken on tap. So piss warm Heineken is a thing of the past, barring an electrical power meltdown.

No thorn among roses jokes, kthx

Before the presentation, I was thinking that maybe it would be something like an extra ingredient in Heineken to make it extra icy cold. Okay, so the story is that, I’ve bought ‘Nescafe Dingin’ a few times, and I highly suspect that the reason it kept ‘dingin’ or ‘cool’ for a longer time was NOT because of its refrigeration, but of its ingredients. There’s something in ‘Nescafe Dingin’ that tastes a little dry, and the sensation after a gulp was as if you’d swallowed dry ice. Not unpleasant mind you, but well, it’s an ingredient.

But happily for Heineken, the beer is not tampered, just the delivery :D Unfortunately it also means that you can’t get Heineken served extra cold at home, unless you have a mini Alaska going on in your kitchen. Oh well. All the more reason for going out and socialise, no?

So what does Heineken served extra cold tastes like? Erm… like Heineken beer… -_-” Heh, well it was almost frozen, the few degrees do make a hell of a difference. For the average Joe, it means that when you order beer on tap, leave it there for a bit while you chat with your friends, you don’t return to a mug of beer going the way of global warming.

It was like smooth golden nectar down my throat :D

books/ afro/ nokia/ e-mail/ travel

I am so stoked right now, must have been the coffee (and a discussion with someone about the forum on Al Jazeera last night). Several things before I post another piece then retire for the weekend…

1) Pearson & Penguin Books Warehouse Sale

You absolutely, absolutely, ABSOLUTELY MUST go! I went to the preview sale yesterday, was giddy with happiness :D And guess who I saw there with a huge stack of Tom Holt books? (HINT). Spent RM 108 on 11 items, 2 of which are for Ryan.

Among my buys: A Royal Duty, Confessions of an Economic Hit Man, Neil Gaiman’s Stardust etc. They cost between RM 10 - RM 12 each. I even got one of my favourite classics, Heidi for RM 5. Yes, I am aware that it is available on-line for free. But there’s just something irreplaceable about good ol’ printed paperbacks.

The warehouse sale is at: Pearson Malaysia Sdn Bhd, Lot 2, Jalan 215, Off Jalan Templer, Petaling Jaya, Selangor. PUAS should be on your left hand side, then take the first left turning after PUAS. Go straight till the end of the road, the venue is the last building on your right hand side. Wikimapia link here. Dates and time: 16 - 21 November, 9 am - 7 pm. Cash and credit cards accepted. Must. Go. Now.

2) The afro ain’t real

The afro do in the previous post was a digital experimentation by my colleague. Not real. I hear he’s giving me a mullet next.

3) It’s a Nokia

A couple days ago, me and a few bloggers had dinner at Rick’s Cafe Casablanca with Mr. Mahmood Kalantar (Nokia APAC business development big dude), Dinesh (Nokia AP communications manager), Hazel (Nokia (M) communications manager) and a few lovely Text100 PR reps. The get-together was to share with us on the S60 development, as well as to get our insight and feedback on the Nokia devices that we own.

Truth to be told, I am not a tech/ gadget person. I only know what I know from actually using a product, and gradually pick up bits and pieces about what goes on behind it as I trod along. Generally I am the furthest end of the end user. So it was interesting to learn some stuff about the S60, what makes it work, how smart phones will take over the world… etc. Makes me more appreciative of the gadget that I have on my hands :D

My 3 main grips about the N95 are: (a) short battery life if you use it as it is meant to be used; (b) Nokia PC suite which I think can be greatly, greatly improved to make my life easier; and (c) 5-megapixel camera that loads too slowly and takes grainy/ noisy photos. All these have nothing to do with the S60, right? Heh oh well. The food was good.

There and then I saw something that I greatly desire, the Nokia N82! Holey crap, I WANT THAT PHONE Z0MG!! Colbert blogged about it, so you can read all the specs and stuff there. We took some photos with the Nokia N82, and IT WAS SO BLOODY AWESOME!!!! Something about the Xenon flash; hey whatever it is, I loved it, but it’s only going to be launched next year :( Sniffs, I hope someone loves me enough… … … (hint)… … … . .( hint) .. .. . . .. . (hint). . .. . . .. … ..

Then a few of us with Hazel, Dinesh and David stayed and chatted till past midnight. Dinesh told us about Jealous Computers… hahah very funny :P Well it was really fun, thanks for having us :D

By the way here’s the link to Maddox’s article on Nokia E70 vs the iPhone.

4) My Gmail rocks (and James Yeang too!)

Gmail just got a whole lot better for me, thanks to James Yeang’s invaluable tip on how to archive all ye e-mails so they do not clog up your inbox. I swear I didn’t know what the ‘Archive’ box was for before this. Decoration, maybe. James Yeang rocks. James Yeang rock so hard that the Rolling Stones are out of a job. James Yeang rock so hard that Britney Spears crashed into Heather Mills’ other leg. James Yeang rock so hard that Tibet wants their mountains back. Yeah babyyy!!!

On an e-mail related note, Hotmail just got sexier looking with a lot more storage. Nice one, but a bit too late right?

5) Home sweet home

It’s back to Batu Pahat after work today for me! I miss my lontong.
