gua.com.my : the gua experience!

Some time back I attended the launch of GUA.COM.MY, an on-line entertainment portal by Media Prima featuring Malaysian showbiz news, events, celebrity gossip etc in form of videos and articles. Lovely Aishah Sinclair was the host, the event was dotted with lots of local celebrities including Jaclyn Victor, Vince Chong, Elaine Daly, Hannah Tan, Amber Chia… and Pop Shuvit gave quite a rousing performance.

In a nutshell, GUA aims to be the biggest entertainment and lifestyle portal with the best Malaysian content. A couple months after its launch, looks like it’s well on its way to achieving their goal. From the press release:

With GUA, information-hungry Malaysians will be kept abreast with the latest news on gossip and entertainment, food, travel, fashion, health and beauty, love and relationship, music and video downloads. The portal is packed with exclusive, unique and compelling contents that everyone, whether young or old, is bound to find something of interest within the website.

One of the more interesting stuff they have out are original productions shot exclusively for GUA, such as Kerana Karina, a made-for-GUA Malay drama starring Marsha (AF), Zizan Nin, Sazzy Falak, Roslan Aziz and Elaine Daly. It tells the story of how a pop princess, Karina copes with fame and life. Occasionally you’ll see familiar faces such as Chelsia Ng and Alan Yun as guest actors. Right now Kerana Karina can be watched for free at the portal (loads pretty fast), and come December it will be available for download. Apparently response to the web drama has been very positive, good enough for a second season soon.

Q: What do you get when you put Amber Chia and Hannah Tan together?
A: Every man’s wet dream

Another made-for-GUA webTV is The GUA Report, a Saturday Night Live-ish setting where Nell Ng and Zalfian Fuzi fake it as newscasters to read… erm, almost made-up news :P I watched a few of these, and my favourite combination is still any episodes with Nell Ng in it. I think she just takes it to another level with her shrilly voice and ah-soh demeanor. She’s good, dammit! :D So now it’s my weekly thing to watch :D

GUA - The GUA report

An excerpt from Episode 12:

Her: Anyway it remains to be seen how Bukit Aman is going to get out of this pubic relations nightmare
Him: Uh.. heheh PUBLIC
Her: Hehehe sorry ar, forgot the ‘L’.

LMAO! Some of the stuff talked there, although tongue-in-cheek would never make it to national TV. Wanna bet?!?!?! :P I saw in the credits that the scriptwriter for that episode was Jasmine Abdullah; special shout out to you ‘cos I guffawed at the last bit that my sister came rushing into my room thinking that something happened to me.

Basically, GOOD local content = very good, especially if it’s something on-line for someone like me who spends a good part of 24 hours on the Net. So if you want to catch up on what’s happening on the local entertainment scene (and behind the scenes), GUA.COM.MY is the site to go.

p/s: GUA is a local slang for ‘me’, sometimes used in the context of ‘gua caya sama lu’. In its proper term, GUA means ‘cave’ but who cares, I like the first definition better :D
