dionne warwick @ shangri-la for live & loud ‘07

Perhaps I had a wicked childhood
Perhaps I had a miserable youth
But somewhere in my wicked, miserable past
There must have been a moment of truth

Sorry ar, don’t mean to be emo, but this song kept playing in my mind as I was thinking of all the wonderful things that came my way via blogging. To some they may seem trivial, but to me they are greatly appreciated, and I constantly wonder what the heck I have done to deserve your faith and trust that led me to new friendships and eye-opening experiences. Believe you me, I am most grateful for all that I’ve encountered.

Someone thought enough of me to pass me some tickets to go see Dionne Warwick perform at Shangri-la Hotel this past Monday. It was a formal do with a sit-down dinner thing, and I understand that the tickets weren’t cheap. There were about 104 tables at the grand ballroom — our table number was 91 and I think it must have cost RM1000 a plate. My sister who was there with her colleagues sat at table no. 37, and her plate cost RM2000. You get the drift.

After work, I went to fetch Val, then went home to change. This was no mean feat, as I have ballooned to about 300kg and most of my nice clothes don’t fit me anymore. I managed to rustle up something, and we zipped into town and managed to reach Shangri-la on time.

not feeling too good/ ryan brushes teeth/ nokia n95 new firmware rox

It’s the time of the month to be feeling under the weather!

Mom is being especially nice to me. Yesterday she cooked up a scrumptious dinner, and then made me a drink of ginseng roots and salt. Apparently that is supposed to be helping with my ‘heaty-ness’ problem. This morning she gave me a small flask of the stuff to be consumed in my workplace.

Mom: Make sure you drink everything arh! Don’t just say you’d drink, but before you come home, you’d pour everything into the sink!
Me: Harr?!?! Why you say like that one!!
Mom: Because I know you.

But that was when I was in primary school and I hated the really hot Milo that we had to gulp down before going to school. I am (much) older now mah… and hopefully wiser not to pour stuff down the kitchen sink :P

This is for Ryan’s parents who are in the Philippines for a 2-week diving holiday, then proceeded to e-mail me to blog about their son.

Ryan having his teeth brushed

He swallowed everything; toothpaste, water and all :D

Nokia Independent Artists Club is having this ‘Fortnight’ thing, 2 weeks of live performances from, erm… independent artists :P I was invited to the launch tomorrow at Velvet Underground @ Zouk KL, but don’t think I will be able to make it lah. SO FAR (from me) OMG!

**************************************************

Just updated my N95 firmware yesterday :D Throughout the upgrade, there was this message along the lines of, “IF YOU DETACH THE CABLE DURING THIS UPGRADE, YOUR PHONE WILL FUCK UP” (I paraphrase). So it was a bit tension for me, fretting that somehow somewhere the cable might decide to detach by itself or something. Luckily everything went fine, and I really like it!

For one, boot up seems faster. Well, basically everything seems to be moving faster! Camera time loads faster, time between taking different shots seems faster, applications load faster… FAST FAST FAST GOOD GOOD GOOD!

There’s also this ‘Search’ function on the standby screen that I find really useful already :D Next thing I am waiting is for the Nokia Music Store to be available to us :D

Happy, happy.

tuborg launch @ mardi gras, 1u

Last Friday I was invited to the launch of TUBORG at Mardi Gras @ 1U. Thought I’d blog about it now to take off some of the undue stress caused by the darn slow Maxis customer log-in site. Short story short, I’d opted not to receive printed billing, just thought I’d help save some trees. But the site is unbelievably slow that I feel like yanking off my hair.

Anyway.. Tuborg by Carlsberg has been launched in Malaysia. From what I tasted, it’s slightly less bitter than other readily-available beer. It should appeal to people like FA who doesn’t really enjoy beer (“Fuck this, beer is so bitter, how can ANYONE LIKE IT OMG OMG OMG 1111″) but is sometimes forced to consume it because people around her do.

Clicking on the photo above will take you to a slightly larger version, where you can really ogle

I guess the part I like best about this Tuborg is how they added a pull-off cap to each bottle. Eliminates the need for a bottle opener, and I wish every other canned or bottled food and drink would have this pull-off cap thing. I don’t like can or bottle openers. I’ve been forced to use them since I was little, especially if mom is busy in the kitchen and needs someone to help her open this or that. Can and bottle openers are the bane of my existence.

Tuborg Malaysia launch - GBC boys
Can’t remember who, and a GBC Boy dancing at the back

The performances were really awesome :D Basically the Carlsberg/ Tuborg people got some boys with six-packs to run around the stage revealing their perfectly-formed assets. All those hours working so hard at the gym… I appreciate them, I do! :D

There was this local group, Gila Battle Crew (GBC) doing all sorts of funky stuff with their hands, legs and head. Michael Yip has a much better shot of them at his blog. They were so rockin’!

There was this Australian dance group, The Next Step who just moved and danced around a lot, incorporating various styles in their performance. I managed to find only one article about them on the Net, here you go.

Also took a short video of their performance. If you want to watch it, I really recommend that you turn your speakers OFF, and just WATCH without sound. Sorry ar, boh lui to buy a more canggih camcorder, hence the seriously distorted sound.

Hehehe, we had fun. At least until the free beer ran out :P

Thanks to Kuan Mei for the invite. Hi to Michael Yip and Eddy Han, as well as this really gorgeous guy that I saw somewhere in the crowd. You be in my dreams.

of megan meier

I’ve been telling people about this case I am following (via Google news and various blogs) that I think I might as well blog about it. Saves me from having to re-tell it every time I think about it.

Actually I first got to know about it from The Wilful Sunflower’s post. A 13-year old teenager Megan Meier from Missouri (USA) committed suicide last October. She had been diagnosed with ADD and depression, and like all teens before her, clearly had a self-image problem. Read the rest from Wikipedia.org, or the article that broke the story recently here.

For those who can’t be arsed to read, I summarised the popular perception of what happened:

1) Megan Meier and a friend ended their friendship.

2) Friend’s mother created a MySpace account, pretending to be a good-looking 16-year old boy named ‘Josh Evans’ to find out if Megan Meier had been saying anything about her daughter on-line.

3) Josh Evans befriended Megan Meier, gained her trust and confidence. Megan Meier was thrilled by the attention of an older, good looking boy.

4) One day out of the blue, Josh Evans messaged Megan Meier, “I don’t know if I want to be friends with you anymore because I’ve heard that you are not very nice to your friends.”

5) A series of MySpace bulletins and messages including “The world would be a better place without you” led Megan Meier to freak out. Later she attempted suicide by hanging herself with a belt in her closet. She was pronounced dead the next day.

6) Six weeks later, a single mother told the Meiers that ‘Josh Evans’ never existed, and was in fact Megan’s ex-friend’s mother. This ex-friend’s mother also enlisted the help of one of her employees to maintain Josh Evans’ MySpace account. The single mother found out about it because her daughter had been encouraged to join in the ‘joke’. A few other children who knew Megan were also into it.

7) One year later, Steve Pokin wrote an article on the incident, published on the St. Charles Journal.

8) The Internet community (if there’s one) was angered by what they viewed as a crime committed by the friend’s mother. Big news everywhere, bla bla bla, a blogger (Sarah Wells) followed trails from Steve Pokin’s article, traced down the family’s information, and revealed the name of the ex-friend’s mother. She was identified as ‘Lori Janine Drew’, and the family was friends with the Meiers (prior to the single mother revealing that Drew was involved in the prank, of course).

9) The Drews knew that Megan Meier took medication for depression as she had went on vacations with them before. So it was not as if the Drews did not know what Megan was suffering from. Their lack of remorse was incredulous; according to a police report published by The Smoking Gun:

Drew state she knew “arguments” had broken out between Megan and others on “my space.” Drew felt this incident contributed to Megan’s suicide, but she did not feel “as guilty” because at the funeral she found out “Megan had tried to commit suicide before.”

Another blogger said that outing Lori Drew was the right thing to do, because her behaviour was parallel to that of a typical child predator. The atmosphere is that Lori Drew is right up there as one of the most hated person in America at the moment.

10) After all that heat, city officials where Megan Meier used to live declared this Wednesday that on-line harassment is a crime.

Questions:

a) Is it fair for the Drew family to experience such a massive wrath of Internet mob justice? After their private information was revealed all over the Net, they’d been receiving all sorts of threats, and were victims of a prank call leading to the police rushing to their home thinking that someone was dead.

b) Could it be that Lori Drew had nothing to do with ‘Josh Evans’, but was protecting a loved one (i.e. her young daughter) who was pretending to be Josh Evans? Based on the single mother’s account, it seems unlikely, but you never know.

c) Why can’t MySpace be held accountable, even if so slightly? I once wrote an article about MySpace and crime, and in the course of research, signed up for a MySpace account as a 14-year old girl, the minimum age to be a MySpace member. There was absolutely NO verification process involved, and as 14-year old unverified member, I could EASILY search for other MySpace members to talk to.

Yes, sure that parents need to be responsible for their children’s surfing time as well. The Internet and its various social networking sites are just another means to crime. Somehow I still feel that there are a hell lot more that those sites can do; but in the US, privacy laws seem stricter than ours.

d) Holy fuck what is the world coming to these days?!

gua.com.my : the gua experience!

Some time back I attended the launch of GUA.COM.MY, an on-line entertainment portal by Media Prima featuring Malaysian showbiz news, events, celebrity gossip etc in form of videos and articles. Lovely Aishah Sinclair was the host, the event was dotted with lots of local celebrities including Jaclyn Victor, Vince Chong, Elaine Daly, Hannah Tan, Amber Chia… and Pop Shuvit gave quite a rousing performance.

In a nutshell, GUA aims to be the biggest entertainment and lifestyle portal with the best Malaysian content. A couple months after its launch, looks like it’s well on its way to achieving their goal. From the press release:

With GUA, information-hungry Malaysians will be kept abreast with the latest news on gossip and entertainment, food, travel, fashion, health and beauty, love and relationship, music and video downloads. The portal is packed with exclusive, unique and compelling contents that everyone, whether young or old, is bound to find something of interest within the website.

One of the more interesting stuff they have out are original productions shot exclusively for GUA, such as Kerana Karina, a made-for-GUA Malay drama starring Marsha (AF), Zizan Nin, Sazzy Falak, Roslan Aziz and Elaine Daly. It tells the story of how a pop princess, Karina copes with fame and life. Occasionally you’ll see familiar faces such as Chelsia Ng and Alan Yun as guest actors. Right now Kerana Karina can be watched for free at the portal (loads pretty fast), and come December it will be available for download. Apparently response to the web drama has been very positive, good enough for a second season soon.

GUA - Amber Chia and Hannah Tan
Q: What do you get when you put Amber Chia and Hannah Tan together?
A: Every man’s wet dream

Another made-for-GUA webTV is The GUA Report, a Saturday Night Live-ish setting where Nell Ng and Zalfian Fuzi fake it as newscasters to read… erm, almost made-up news :P I watched a few of these, and my favourite combination is still any episodes with Nell Ng in it. I think she just takes it to another level with her shrilly voice and ah-soh demeanor. She’s good, dammit! :D So now it’s my weekly thing to watch :D

GUA - The GUA report

An excerpt from Episode 12:

Her: Anyway it remains to be seen how Bukit Aman is going to get out of this pubic relations nightmare
Him: Uh.. heheh PUBLIC
Her: Hehehe sorry ar, forgot the ‘L’.

LMAO! Some of the stuff talked there, although tongue-in-cheek would never make it to national TV. Wanna bet?!?!?! :P I saw in the credits that the scriptwriter for that episode was Jasmine Abdullah; special shout out to you ‘cos I guffawed at the last bit that my sister came rushing into my room thinking that something happened to me.

GUA - The GUA team

Me and some random noobs at the launch

Basically, GOOD local content = very good, especially if it’s something on-line for someone like me who spends a good part of 24 hours on the Net. So if you want to catch up on what’s happening on the local entertainment scene (and behind the scenes), GUA.COM.MY is the site to go.

p/s: GUA is a local slang for ‘me’, sometimes used in the context of ‘gua caya sama lu’. In its proper term, GUA means ‘cave’ but who cares, I like the first definition better :D
