pimpage: jangan togel by nike football
I was 16 years old when I was seriously into football. I could give you the various footballers’ names, teams, country of origin and how well they did in this or that match. Now I can’t really be bothered but once in a very blue moon, I’d catch the occasional game while not knowing what the heck was going on. But some matches are better than others, in the sense that they are more gripping, and frustrating ( in a good way ), and I rather watch these than some half-hearted performance by a top team against a rookie team so way out of their league.
One thing I remember vividly was that the footballers would remove their shirts when they have a victory… like this…

What? It’s not a sin to admire from afar…
Then comes along Nike with their ‘Jangan Togel‘ football campaign. Half-naked booties as well, but this time the rules are reversed. Apparently:
1) You remove your shirt and play the rest of the game topless when the opposing team scores the first goal; so
2) You don’t really want to be one topless; and
3) It is a long-time Malaysian tradition.
Seriously, I had NO idea what togel meant. Bogel I know lah… so I thought this was Nike’s attempt to be ‘cleaner’, heh. So I asked my Malay friends, and one told me, “… the arse part exposed…”. Heh, ok
According to Nike, it means ‘incomplete’ or ‘tail-less’, so…
And yes, I am pimping the Nike football ‘Jangan Togel’ campaign ( while not getting paid for this pimpage ). In line with that, I must recommend that you check out the website, where you’d be impressed by the nifty flash work and cartoons against a lovely backdrop of KL. Don’t know who the cartoonist is ( or are ) but the whole thing was pretty well-done.
The only problem I have was perhaps the lack of a purpose for the campaign. Maybe there is one, but I failed to realise it? Or maybe I am the type of person who must have a product association, maybe Nike just wants to pimp the street football culture in Malaysia, or highlight awesome local artists and bands… then is it awfully nice of them or am I just naive?! Heh
Anyway the song in the background is ‘My Generation’ by a local band, Seven Collar T-shirt. The song is available for download at the website, and part of the lyrics goes:
“In this field I’m weightless, clinging on to my shirt,
Clinging on to my shirt
We can break their fortress, fighting on for the score,
I believe there’s more.”
But I think the more awesome stuff is the comic… In the ‘Download’ section where you can get wallpapers for your PC or mobile and ringtones, you can also download the comic in PDF format. Volume One is ‘Buang Padang’ which is roughly about a bunch of kids being thrown off the field and arrested for playing football. Volume Two is ‘Kebangkitan Terakhir’, about the evil dude who banned football, who decided on a FINAL football match to determine if the prisoners should be released… Heh, well I like them, and I await Vol 3 and 4.
So… check out the ‘Jangan Togel‘ by Nike Football website, like NOW!

I never knew there was such a “tradition” all these years. I can’t remember how we decided who got to play shirts and who got to play skins, but it was all done in a practical manner – no shame in being the skins team.
‘I rather watch these than some half-hearted performance by a top team against a rookie team so way out of their league.’
Yet, watching a team like Scarsborough in 1989 who weren’t even in the league [they were in Vauxhall Conference] kick Chelseas nuts when Chelsea was fielding thier Internationals and were top of the FA Premiership Ladder was wonderful.
Looks like I’m third from left in the first Nike picture. [Not the colour photos one].
Never heard of this ‘Jangan Togel’ shite.
I suspect it’s just clever marketing by Nike.
All I remember of playing football was that when we lost, we had to line up at the goal so the opposition could take pot shots at us
omg so wrong, those pics..
KY’s right. Biar bogel but jangan pick up teh SOAP….
Will there be female teams?
suertes: I don’t remember this tradition either, lol
dabs: I was thinking along the lines of manchester utd vs malaysian football team. i’d watched some really good games where the top dogs went home with their tails between their legs
julianME: ouch
but that sounds more practical though
ky: dont la jeles
jamil: oOoOoOOoOOoOOOOOo
cmos: i found some good photos of them females. but being straight, i’m not interested
Togel is indonesian for Botak.
so, when someone say that he will togel you, he meant he want to botak you.
and in this context i guess togel means to strip…
and hey, some of us chap do have nice body to be togel-led!
Suanie – Unfortunately when Man U and other teams go play in Malaysia or come to play against some Aussie league team they usually don’t field their best side. Their internationals are off doing other things whilst their reserves [and players they want to try out], come out to play.
Though, I do remember watching Gordon Banks playing with Stoke City against WA State side when I was about 7 years old. That was memorable.
[At least I seem to think it was memorable, I'm getting so ol I can't remember. I only remember that it was memorable!]
[For those too young to remember, Gordon Banks was Englands International Goalie. He saved a shot from Pele that Pele refered to as the best save he'd ever seen in his life!]
Geees … I’m old … again … well, still …
U love hot men! So do I! We will get along! See you at ping’s party this SAT! I got ur website from ming!
Really cool ad, I have to admit! Glad to see Malaysia Boleh
stupe: oh ok. i know u are speaking for yourself, heh
dabs: you are old yay
estee: heheh hi! i am going for ping’s party? heh
paul: i thought the ads were cool…
Suan – no, i’m a fat slob which like you, wants to be a lean mean machine.
Keep up the good gym work!
it is a not a tradition.but more like to easily recognize your team.shirt on is my team, shirt off is another team.to decide, who ever score the 1st goal will keep their shirt.so eventho u dont know everybody in the team,u would easily recognize them.keeping your shirt on is always my priority,i dont like being half naked with girls staring at me.
