I used to travel a lot, and have stayed in hotels big and small all over Malaysia. I've had some strange experiences but its usually related to me by people I share the room with, while I was totally unaware of them. I'm one of those with EXTREMELY STRONG "Sat Hei". Here are some common 'etiquette' and 'precautions' I picked up from my years of travel.:

-Always knock before ging in, everytime you leave the room.

-Bring a pair of slippers, even if you have no need for it. Has to be well used BY YOU. Brand new hotel slippers, or your friend's slippers won't do. Before retiring, place the slippers next to each other near the bed (but not right next to the bed) pointing away from the bed, with one slipper flipped over. I don't know the exact reason for this but it has something to do with 'diverting' your presence away from the bed to 'confuse' any spirits.

- If there are mirrors in the room, cover them with something. All of them. I'm sure everyone know why this is done.

- Carry some kind of 'charm' with you, and place it next to your bed. Every religion has their own version, so use what suits you the best. If nothing else it will at least give you some sense of security.

- If you feel 'weird' while in a hotel room, its always advisable to leave a light on. Not a dim bedside light but like one fluorescent light. I find that I can sleep soundly when I do this. If nothing else at least it prevents you from seeing shadows in the room when you wake up in the middle of th night. If you STILL see shadows in the room even with the light on, GET THE HELL OUT OF THERE PRONTO!!!

My favourite hotel? Pangkor Laut. Simple THE BEST! 2nd place in my book goes to: Nexus Karambunai Resort; because I can go there and frolic in their grounds & eat in their restaurants anytime I want without having to book a room :P

Heh. Got 2 stories to talk about.

When I was in Genting First World with a friend, apparently our door was opened while we were fast asleep. A friend in the adjacent room (there's a door btw. the rooms) woke up and said she saw someone step out but when she looked into the hallway from her own room, nada, zip, nobody.

Freaked the hell out of us because we're both light sleepers and we don't recall anything of the sort. But that little hook thing over the door had been opened, and we're 100% positive that we had closed it before going to bed.

Weird eh?

Second was at RIA apartments, collegemates went up to the room to settle in. Lo and behold, we all walked in, and I got major goosebumps the moment I stepped out the lift. Hell, everyone in the group just went silent and exchanged worried looks.

The whole floor was seriously freaking gloomy and to top it all off our room was cleaned halfway. Like the cleaner just beh tahan and had to leave it halfway. (We didn't see ANYONE on the floor either btw.) All of us immediately agreed to call and change to a different room.
