hotels and stuff
Recently, something work-related had me visiting several prominent hotels in the city. I swear that this happened every time the sales peps took me to check out their hotel rooms — they would either knock on the door, or ring the doorbell or do both before putting the key in to open the door.
How do I begin to explain it? Right — it is semi-believed that hotels are full of spirits ( not the drinkable type ), and there is one in every hotel room. Long-term residents, if you will. So before you enter the hotel room, it is best that you knock on the door first, as if asking the spirit for permission to enter. If you do that, then the spirit would not bother you at night.
Some people believe it, some people don’t. Some knock, others don’t. I do believe in the supernatural, though not having had the misfortune to encounter one. And I generally do not give much thought to it until some hotel personnel go knocking on the room door before entering. The assumption that there was a spirit in the room that we were about to enter, made me cut short my room inspections. Just my imagination working overtime in my head, and there’s not much I can do about it, read third sentence of this paragraph.
I don’t suppose I am the very intuitive type then. A couple years ago, I was on holiday with two other friends. At that time, one of them could strongly ‘feel’ the presence of spirits and such ( which I believe to be genuine due to some stuff that happened, whom shall remain anonymous ). After we checked out of the hotel, my friend told me that there was a spirit in the bathroom the whole time we were there. My friend just tried to ignore it, and didn’t want to tell us beforehand in case we got freaked out. On my side, I thought it was a pleasant hotel room and spent the 1 night there peacefully.
My favourite hotel in Malaysia is the Mutiara Beach Resort in Penang. What’s yours?
u mean ur favourite hotel is where all the spirit (consumable and non-consumable) joined u for a night?
no ar. the said encounter was not at the mutiara beach resort. but lots of consumable spirits, yes
ah. miss the fun… maybe u should try get freakish..
wanna see how Suanie react at time of such
The reason why you have never had an ‘encounter’ is that your “sat hei” (killing vibes?) is very powerful. Or so I’ve been told..
The most enjoyable hotel I’ve ever been to was probably this chalet in Redang - nothing fancy, though it did come with air-conditioning. Although the real reason why I enjoyed it was because of my friends, it did come with smashing scenery and a pretty decent all-you-can-eat bbq on one of the nights.
You think too much. It is standard procedure for all hotel personnel to practice the ringing/knocking part, nobody want surprise. Just imagine you bathing and the cleaner enter the room with general access/key, enough to give you heart attack. It become a habits for them to knock/ring even for empty room.
My favorites will be hotel at Lake Toba, natural chill breeze, no salty wind.
Talking abt Penang hotels, I tink they might be reli spooked… O_o …
Here’s a real life encounter.
I was travelling around whole of Msia for some regional training in Oct 05.
At each hotel stop, colig n me wud knock before entering the hotel room for 1st time. Dun ask me why but it was juz advise from mum n coligs.
But the time in Penang, we FORGOT to do it.
Blame it on exhaustion n what not.
But that particular stay wasnt particular pleasant.
For the 1st time in my hotel stays (for that bout of travelling), my skin wud literally PRICKLE when Im in the toilet. As if someone was watching. I shrug it off thinking maybe its coz the toilet was all marble-y and it was quite huge.
Later that nite, we went out for din n when we came back, we had problem accessing our room door. The access card juz wudnt work. We were almost gonna go down all the way to the lobby when we decide to try 1 last time n it worked this time…
Nvm that. We both got into our own beds n slept it off.
This is the best part…
In mid of the nite, I became conscious that someone was standing next to me.
Don’t ask me how I know.
Its one of those if you’re in bed wif ur partner n instead of sleeping, he looks at you and you are AWARE that someone is looking at you sort of thing.
SIDETRACK!
Anyway, I felt that presence. By then, I was fully conscious albeit wif my eyes closed.
The spookiest thing was that I felt it was a FEMALE…
But scaredy me didnt dare to open my eyes lest I cant face what will appear!!!
I silently muttered a prayer of Im here juz for work, Im only staying a nite, Im sorry Im trespassing but I’ll be out in the morn n pls leave me alone.
After some time, I fell back to sleep.
After we left the hotel in the morn, I casually asked my colig what she tot of the hotel. N she actually commented we weren’t the only ones in the room. Apparently, my colig has sixth sense n tho she can see them, she can sense them! But she didnt want to spook me out so she kept quiet. N vice versa for me too.
So yeah, no fav hotels for me… >_
Traders and Maya are pretty funky hotels. Quite cool.
I like hotels if they let me say for free.
Favourite hotel? Howls moving castle! Oh wait, that’s not a hotel!!!
eee momok!
u know me ….. pinky the ghost story teller. hahahahaha. anyway, i truly believe that every single time u step into a hotel room that you should knock …. just an act of courtesy, to tell these spirits that you need to use their ’space’ for a while. The moment you leave the room, they will come back and occupy their space. so KNOCK EVERY SINGLE TIME! i even knock on the toilet door when i go to the toilet at work. lol.
and so far, favourite hotel … wahaha …. Mandarin Oriental, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
I’ve always thought such tales were nonsense. My gf told me that she heard someone advised to bring a lemon (i think) and cut it half or something and put it in the hotel room. After some time, that is suppose to “capture” the spirit and then you take it out and throw it some place else. Seriously, the hotel rooms doesn’t bother me. Not until I hear “spooky tales” of hotel rooms like this that is.
I’ve been at the office alone one night without a problem until I remembered a story told by my colleague some time before — her friend was supposed to open shop but didn’t dare to go in because of “a family” that was in there. The song that was playing in my headphone didn’t help much either. It was a mandarin rap song about ghost.
I think it’s all in the mind. The more you think about it, the more it screws your mind. Now I’ll have to try forget this post asap…haha.

Heh. Got 2 stories to talk about.
When I was in Genting First World with a friend, apparently our door was opened while we were fast asleep. A friend in the adjacent room (there’s a door btw. the rooms) woke up and said she saw someone step out but when she looked into the hallway from her own room, nada, zip, nobody.
Freaked the hell out of us because we’re both light sleepers and we don’t recall anything of the sort. But that little hook thing over the door had been opened, and we’re 100% positive that we had closed it before going to bed.
Weird eh?
Second was at RIA apartments, collegemates went up to the room to settle in. Lo and behold, we all walked in, and I got major goosebumps the moment I stepped out the lift. Hell, everyone in the group just went silent and exchanged worried looks.
The whole floor was seriously freaking gloomy and to top it all off our room was cleaned halfway. Like the cleaner just beh tahan and had to leave it halfway. (We didn’t see ANYONE on the floor either btw.) All of us immediately agreed to call and change to a different room.
I used to travel a lot, and have stayed in hotels big and small all over Malaysia. I’ve had some strange experiences but its usually related to me by people I share the room with, while I was totally unaware of them. I’m one of those with EXTREMELY STRONG “Sat Hei”. Here are some common ‘etiquette’ and ‘precautions’ I picked up from my years of travel.:
-Always knock before ging in, everytime you leave the room.
-Bring a pair of slippers, even if you have no need for it. Has to be well used BY YOU. Brand new hotel slippers, or your friend’s slippers won’t do. Before retiring, place the slippers next to each other near the bed (but not right next to the bed) pointing away from the bed, with one slipper flipped over. I don’t know the exact reason for this but it has something to do with ‘diverting’ your presence away from the bed to ‘confuse’ any spirits.
- If there are mirrors in the room, cover them with something. All of them. I’m sure everyone know why this is done.
- Carry some kind of ‘charm’ with you, and place it next to your bed. Every religion has their own version, so use what suits you the best. If nothing else it will at least give you some sense of security.
- If you feel ‘weird’ while in a hotel room, its always advisable to leave a light on. Not a dim bedside light but like one fluorescent light. I find that I can sleep soundly when I do this. If nothing else at least it prevents you from seeing shadows in the room when you wake up in the middle of th night. If you STILL see shadows in the room even with the light on, GET THE HELL OUT OF THERE PRONTO!!!
My favourite hotel? Pangkor Laut. Simple THE BEST! 2nd place in my book goes to: Nexus Karambunai Resort; because I can go there and frolic in their grounds & eat in their restaurants anytime I want without having to book a room
Yeeeeee! I stayed in a haunted room when I was in Korea! My sister was snoring away and I was hiding under the sheets beside her! =O
w000000000t more MOREEEEEEEE storiessssssssssss pls thanksssssss
