no ships :(
Last Sunday after a hearty breakfast of Klang bak kut teh with my childhood friend Richard, we decided to venture out into the wilderness for a bit
You see, I’d always wanted to see ships. When I was little, we came to KL to stay a couple days with my mom’s ex-school mate. She and her family lived in the biggest house I’d ever seen, complete with a swimming pool and Super Mario (the version after the cassette tapes). She also took us to a boat trip (they owned a small private yacht) and it was superb!
So it was with that warm fuzzy memory that me and Richard drove out to the Klang ports. After 3 hours of driving round and round and round, the warm fuzzy memory was severely crushed with immense frustration and wanting to tear Paris Hilton’s head and violently swing her around with a limp doll. She’d probably enjoy it anyway.
We drove up to North Port. Because it’s a famous port, right? So illogically it should be filled with ships and yachts and ships and yachts, right?
Of course not. The roads were as confusing as hell, and we almost swerved into a wrong road. Luckily a driver in a humongous lorry honked to alert us that it was an outgoing road.
Needless to say, we couldn’t go into North Port at all. The closest thing to a ship was the massive numbers of contennas in many warehouses.
So, we headed for the West Port. It was a half an hour drive, went past Port Klang town, went past the turning into Star Cruise terminal…
And of course we couldn’t get anywhere remotely near the port. We asked a policemen where we could see the ships, and he said to try the Star Cruise terminal…
… where we were blocked from entering at all.
There goes my hopes of looking at ships and yachts ala CSI: Miami.
So if you are feeling adventurous, forget the North and West ports. We found it out the hard way for you.
p/s: Anyone knows where we CAN see the yachts and ships and boats?

If you plan to “balik kampung” any time soon, check out PTP. At the very least, you should be able to see some gargantuan Maersk ships there.
If you don’t, then probably the huge cargo cranes would suffice
Yachts are another issue though. If you are lucky, then you might get to see the Sultan’s yacht at its usual docking station at Stulang (near Zon Bebas Cukai), opposite the defunct TNB station.
Pray that I earn enough money to buy my own yacht so not only can you see it, I’d be glad to let you hop on board. If you’re extra nice, I’d probably allow you to navigate.
I think there are ships (cargo) near the Esplanade area. Always see a handful of ‘em there.
cycle and carriage bintang’s showroom on the federal highway has a selection of yachts…
Come to Penang. There is a new pier beside the ferry terminal.
Else, there is one near the marine police base in Bayan Lepas just after the bridge. If you come to the island, its on the left of the bridge. You can see the yatchs from the bridge.
Azmeen: but my kg in bp… what teh hell.. I could go from PJ to Klang, I can make my way to JB
Gallivanter: which/where esplanade?
Paul: floating yachts la…….
neeshen: oO Cool will note that down for my next trip to Penang
Thanks
come to singapore suanie… i bring you to see ships.
Why didn’t you go to the Royal Selangor Yatch Club?
hi suanie. (sometimes i work at port wharfside – very HOT in the day and very COLD in the night) sometimes its very ’sien’ when we go through the motions of going into the ports. check this, and check that. for girls even worse. so many questions (they are scared of whoring activities worrrr)…
if you would like to see vessels (from some distance lo), you can try going to tanjung harapan, behind those container yards in bandar sultan sulaiman, specifically along lingkaran sultan hishamuddin (u can find this road name in the mph mapbook), there is a ‘port klang golf club’ over there, and there is a huge ship structure opposite the club (can camwhore one). there is some designated walkway to enjoy the scenery there, but no sand, onli rocks. watch out for heavy vehicles in this area though.
alternatively, you can try the (esplanade area??) nearby southport. if you take the ktm until port klang, get off at the station and there is the area to take boats to pulau ketam. this is, urm, jalan stesen (aso can find in mph mapbook) if not mistaken. you can see boats here, and sometimes, vessels (ships lor).
don’t go to westport lar. the security is too damned strict. go in to work also so many questions to answer.
Are fishing sampans with a sail considered yatches?
Haha, there are loads of seaside kampungs in my part of the world where you can see them.
in: I didn’t know there was one
quartermile: Thanks for the tip! Actually I forgot to mention that we did go to Tg Harapan. No idea exactly where, but there was a medan selera at a corner, then we turned right. Asked an old man there where we could go, he gave some vague directions and kept saying ‘tapi jauh la…’ so we assumed he referred to West Port lor. So nothing like CSI Miami berths?
vincent: I’ve seen that many2222 times before also
If you go SG, take the Sentosa Cable Car, should be lucky enough to see a few. I once passed right over Superstar Virgo, though I think they have moved the Starcruise berth already.
Another place guarantee see ships in SG is the seafood center near Bedok, in East Coast Park. There are many, many vessels caught in the traffic jam to get into Singapore Port.
For Pt. Klang, the roads seem to be designed so that you only see the cranes and containers and not the ships.
If you go Pangkor, Pasir Bogak beach should have some leisure boats, though not quite impressive looking yacht-type stuff.
Gee, none of these places are near PJ. Something like beaches, I guess… BTW I love ships too.
mmm… likely the guy was referring to the jetty near the port klang ktm station nearby southport. its cordoned off in parts by some zinc sheet fencing but you can sight some boats there. if you get to the port klang ktm station at jalan stesen (which is also where pk police station is) you can ask the station master there where the ‘jeti pulau ketam’ is. usually there are just boats. not too bombastic type of boats, but are actually approachable (for rides etc.). there are less cargo vessels sighted around this area.
if u go to the tanjung harapan area along lingkaran sultan hishamuddin, (actually in taman perindustrian selat kelang utara, not bdr sultan sulaiman initially quoted, which is nearby), you will be able to see cargo vessels, albeit at a distance, as they will be standing-by at deep water point to berth or are going and coming from wharfside of Northport.
Given to understand that it is possible to sight vessels at Star Cruise, but at a distance.
Apart from these options, locals might quote Carey Island, which can be accessed along the road to Morib, i.e. turn toward banting from the kesas highway stretch, however, understood that notable items of interest are the local aborigine groups and the seafood. the berths are more industrial in nature with many migrant workers in the area, the berths are mainly used for barges transporting cargo and the like.
good luck!
got one boat in my living room!
Hmm.. if you want boats/yachts ala that CSI Miami, the only place I had experienced as such was in err… Langkawi Yacht Club (I think that’s the name, but I’m sure it’s in Langkawi). I’m also not sure how the hell I could go in there, I was and am not a member OBVIOUSLY, well… the person I dated could be, I err.. forgot.
But maybe… they could be opened to public also lah, that would also explained why I was there
But there my friend, would be exactly like CSI Miami that one lah.
It’s a little bit far but the best place would be Tanjung City Marina in Penang…the view of all the boats and yachts is just awesome
3 years ago…i saw a huge container ship parked near minyak beku…it was bloody huge and it was full moon that night. The sight was enjoyed with a couple of beers and good company of friends.
Contennas ??? They are anti-antennas???
i second Faieza. Langkawi. We stopped by this petrol station and lo and behold, right behind it is a port?berth? with many many yachts! just like CSI Miami! i don’t know if it’s the Langkawi Yacht Club, but it was quite devoid of hustle and bustle. very serene. and the gate wasn’t locked, so we could walk up to gawk at the yachts!
Come to KK lah – the Sutera Harbour marina here has a ton of nice yachts and a couple of the superyachts too.
AND it’s only 3 minutes away from town. But there’s a 2 and a half hour plane ride for you to get here
suertes: I think it should be easier to spot yachts in SG than in Pt Klang. They should stop advertising North Port along the Federal Highway… wtf make ppl think they could go there and look see only
quartermiler: heh i wanted to go to Morib, as my friend services the area and often goes there, so he’d know how/where to go. but it was too late. will go next time!
ky: but it doesn’t move.
Faieza: a bit too far from PJ, right
but will keep it in mind, thanks mwah
sabrina: oO thanks… will note that down for the next time I go to Png.
Andrew: Minyak Beku?!? The most I saw was sampans. But the beer part was great
There’s another beach that I forgot… have to drive along the road after the golf club… that was good too.
Dabs: hmmmm
entwined: awesome! lucky you
Shan: Hahaha next time! Will call you yah:D
Actually,
If you want to see berths and “those” type of “ships”; you’re actually referring to yacht clubs. Try Port Klang (for some reason I always type that out as Pork Tlang) Yacht Club or the PD or Malacca Marina.
If I’m not mistaken; the PD or Malacca marinas are almost exactly like those in the movies. Complete with high class ang mohs.
Be warned though; some of the clubs can be a ‘lil stuck up and only allow members in. Try and get someone who’s a member to bring you in. I did. hehe.
go to port klang la. got yacht club there. i used to go there a lot when my dad had a boat but not anymore. i dont think they would stop you from entering but its kinda dirty la.
