I just saw this movie, but I'm not sure how to take it. Is it about the boredom of the city, the lack of father figures, the economic class, all of the above? I guess what bothered me were the piling up of red flags. Early on I was thinking that the guy was far too aggressive for their (lack of) relationship, wondering who his family was, wondering what he did for a living. Their first date was, to me, seriously creepy.

As a woman, I can understand being drawn to someone who's a little rough around the edges, independent. And I can empathize with the wishful thinking that lets women ignore the red flags until the story actually plays itself out. And maybe it would have helped if he'd been more over-the-top, generous, winning over her family. I guess I didn't buy the escalations in the relationship - her buying him the coat, her staying the night. But I must have bought it a little, because I had a hard time being sure that he'd planned it all along. Maybe the cousin kidnapped John, or maybe he got roped into it somehow. Or that's why he wanted to run and hide, to get away from a past history of doing that.

[...] Then I began to talk to the guy on MSN, and he kept bugging me to watch his short films. I was like, err.. no. Then I was invited to watch ‘Love Conquers All‘, and so I asked him to come along, knowing that he is an indie/ independent (well not so much now) director/ producer and would probably enjoy this kind of artsy local stuff. That was my first time meeting Edmund in real life, and I found him a rather enthusiastic chap whose informed thoughts and opinions on the local movie industry came tumbling out faster than he could speak [...]

the homework scene is also one of my favourite, the other one being the opening scene in the bus. well, i also like the scene when the mother ring the bell, while the girl hides behind the car.

Gotta agree, the homework scene was really affecting, there were times when I felt that the kid was being quite a brat.

"Shaolintiger?!"
