in search of non-halal tony roma’s

I dedicate this blog entry to Dr. Liew forummers :P

A few years ago, J and I were in Singapore, and she took me to Tony Roma’s located along Orchard Rd. I gasped at the price (Malaysians doing the currency converting, remember?) but it became one of the most memorable dining experiences of my life so far.

I… had… never… tasted… such… succulent… ribs…. EVAR!!!!!

Not that I have had a lot of grilled pork ribs at that point of my life, but hey, you know good food when you eat it.

Fast-forward to year 2006. Word got to me that Tony Roma’s is opening an outlet in KL. I was ecstatic.Word got to me that it’s going to be a halal restaurant. I was dumbfucked.

HOW CAN?!?!?!?!?!?!!!!!!!

In retrospect, they can lah, considering that this is an Islamic country and we get a lot of tourist money from the Arabs and it makes economical sense and all that. But… the sanctity of the food…. COMPROMISED!!!!

So when I was in Singapore early this week, I made it a point to revisit good ol’ Tony.

Tony Roma’s half Onion Loaf (S$8.50).

They have all sorts of stuff on their menu — soups, salads, grilled chicken, seafood, burgers, sandwiches, pork and beef ribs and assorted combo grills. I was there for the ribs and ribs was what I ordered and I got what I ordered hence this photo of my dinner that is the original baby back ribs :D

Tony Roma's original baby backs

Mine was the regular slab (S$27.90). Should have gone for the half slab (S$20.50) because I had great difficulty consuming all of my meal (yeah, over ambitious again). In the end help was needed and tendered (thanks babe).

The baked potato sprinked with piggy bacon bits was wonderful! The ribs… well it was nice lah. But as great memories go, they are best preserved, left untouched and never revisited.

tony roma in sunway pyramid was originally announced as non-halal. then suddenly the news is that they changed their mind.

wolfx, i said, “tony roma in sunway pyramid was originally announced as non-halal. then suddenly the news is that they changed their mind.”

since they originally announced it as non-halal and after that they changed their minds, that would mean that they decided to make it halal. that’s why when u went last week, it was ’still’ halal

My whole family loves Tony Romas in SG cos of the pork ribs.
If you’re in SG and want a cheaper pork rib, you can go to Cold Storage and get it there.
They sell it over the counter with all sorts of cooked meat that’s on the go.
Buy straight away and can eat straight away! Yumm!!

When we heard abt Tony Romas opening in Msia, we were excited!
Went to the one in Sunway pyramid when it opened only to have our excitement crushed!
HALAL i.e. NO PORK RIBS/BABY BACK RIBS!!
In the end, we didnt even step in…..and NEVER WILL!…….unless its SG’s Tony Romas! (that’s exactly what we told the person attending to us at Sunway’s Tony Romas’ entrance)
