me want to be a lean machine: day 4

It’s my second day doing the Atkins. At first I had thought of just wanting to cut down my food intake (yes, I did eat a lot, mostly when I was unhappy and felt like I was out of control with my life etc). Then my sister talked to me about the Atkins, which I had heard before, and sort of got me into it. Mostly because she was so encouraging, I think.

I went online and looked up for more info on the Atkins diet. You can find it at Wiki, me lazy to post the url now. For most parts it sounds ok — I was prepared to give up rice, noodles, bread, sugared drinks, alcohol (oh le horror), but what I didn’t expect was to find caffeine on the list.

OH MY GOD LIFE WITHOUT COFFEE, HOW TO LIVE LIDDAT?!?!?!?!

Guess I’m going to find out the hard way. Sniff.

    Atkins diet… might kill you.

It’s totally bullshit, used by people who’s never bother to do things the proper way. Go read up on it’s side effects.

Why is it people always want to take short cuts ?

Nobody ever wants to work out/exercise.

It’s either this diet, or that diet..

This slimming pill, or that slimming pill.

This slimming center and that slimming center.

    It’s the lifestyle you know.

So what if you lose the extra weight ?

When you resume your old habits, you’ll just gain them back again.

Lifestyle change is the key, eat moderately and exercise regularly.

I am certainly not seeing any exercise/workout plans.

They say fat people are lazy, so even in their attempts to reduce weight, you can see the lazy efforts.

    Where’s the exercise hmm ?

Dieting does NOT WORK. Not if you’ve got way more fat than the normal person. You’ll end up dieting for quite some time, give up halfway then pig yourself out and may end up even fatter.

My prediction, your lean machine project is going to be a miserable failure. :-P

erm. don’t overdo it with the atkins diet k. in fact, don’t over do it with ANY hip and happening diet plan. just eat moderately.

and stay away from williams for a bit. Wakakak. sorry william, you rock too hard.

    jom! minum!

Oh yea.. beware that also for some ppl the lack of carbo(like rice and noodles perhaps) will lead to a depressive mood.. it happened to my sis. U might wanna consider LOW-CARB instead of totally cancelling out carb altogether. There is also the danger of putting on weight even more dratically once u get off this diet. Take care

SF: Aiya, you so bad la! Be a bit +ve can or not? I do agree with you, Atkins IS a load of bullpoo. Even Anthony Robbins is not in favour of that diet scheme. Eating too much meat or protein will poison your system. Your body will tend to be sluggish and you’ll spend more time sleeping coz your body will need more energy to digest all that stuff. You’ll burn more energy, true, but at the expense of vitality and more waking time.

Even as an “overweight” vegetarian, I can still run for an hour NON-STOP and without any muscle pain! Plus, vegies are cheaper and easier to prepare. Go easy on the meat Suan…

Oh yea.. I would like to add to ShadowFox’s comment :) DIET is not a bad word. ITs just one’s eating habit. One can have a BAD DIET.. or a healthy DIET. Your objective(long-term) is to seek out a healthy diet which you can live with. On the other hand, in some ppl’s case EXTREME DIET is needed due to obesity. Then one can go down.. then CHANGE to another more normal diet, exercise regime for maintenance. SOrry dun mean to nitpick.. but I can’t help myself the word DIET is auto-associated with something bad… or what not

Me think eating moderate is good, doesn’t need any specific diet plans, be it Atkins or drinking vege soup only.

The other key is, of course, to be slightly more active. Like walking to starbucks instead of driving the 5 minute journey. =/

Have you tried this? The Abs Diet? I’m currently reading it and wonder if I will be able to get a flat tummy in 6 weeks. If it works, I’ll just come back and inform you. Hehe!

eat less meat, less carbo (rice, bread etc), take more vege, drink more water, and go for some chlorella products to boost up your energy level/nutriens intake for the day (because you take less carbo and meat. :)

you might wanna check out my blog, as I’ve just posted my before and after pictures of myself. I lost about 18kgs in 3 months, so hope those pictures help encourage you on your mission. :)

atkins is a very controversial diet method. becareful with the kind of protein u take. u don’t want to be losing weight and get high cholestrol in return. do eat a bit of carbos like mushroom (grilled mushrooms with olive oil and herb). try making your food more flavourful so that u enjoy them. and…exercise!!! it’s tough but you have to.

    good luck mwahs.

  10. UnkaLeong, 18. September 2006, 12:08

I agree with KY, all things in moderation = good. Dieting itself won’t help. You need to exercise as well. Try eating in a reverse pyramidal fashion: heavy breakfast, moderate lunch and a light dinner. Being asian it’s gonna be hard to stay away from rice as well :( Anyways, I cut back on coffee and switched to Green Tea instead. But I still need a cup of joe in the morning to get the engine going…Good Luck on your quest!

  11. Jasmine, 18. September 2006, 13:24

this is not gonna work…u nid to exercise..brisk walk, gym and yoga not diet…

  12. harpy, 18. September 2006, 14:39

you should do name change instead…suanie to suaku which is safer, probably instead just listening to dear old sis, do some reading, justify it suites you, cos no matter what other ppl says, you are the one responsible for your health and probably you will be the one who executes them…unless of course, you also believe those stupid OSIM chairs, thats another story another time…ciao

I’ve got a friend who’s a living testimony that the atkins diet works, somewhat. He did lose weight after undergoing the diet, but he didn’t overdo it and he EXERCISED on the side. I think atkins’s works only for the short term. After that you might want to change to a healthier diet/lifestyle plan.

green tea got caffeine what. so when you feel the caffeine withdrawal headaches coming on you brew some of the hijau stuff la. plus got anti-oxidants some more and even a metabolism stimulation thing. rindu you girlie xoxo

  15. Chen, 18. September 2006, 15:57

wow. everyone seems so against atkins diet.

i’m not being the devil’s advocate here, just truthful, heart-to-heart sharing. cehhh.

my aunt and cousin both went on the atkins diet a couple of years ago. aunt very nearly could qualify for a female sumo wrestling team, bless her kind soul. my cousin was even fatter than i am (i hope you still remember how i look like). due to willpower etc etc, my aunt lost enough weight to be deemed healthy by her doctor, and my cousin, goodness. she’s damn fucking hot now.

my mom on the other hand… she did try the atkins diet and lost about 8kgs, but then she gave up. :/

so it really depends on the individual loh. whatever it is, i give u moral support suan. go for it! :)

  16. Chen, 18. September 2006, 16:00

oh and yeah, exercise plus change of long term eating habit lah.

  17. Jee, 18. September 2006, 16:17

Atkins do work, I’d tried that before, losing some 10 pounds in 2 weeks.. but then the old habits crawled in and gained back the weight shortly.

Like many said it’s long term habits that matters. Have a look at South Beach Diet instead, it’s more like changing eating habits for long term than to look for drastic changes.

    Good luck, ganbatte.

  18. krisz, 18. September 2006, 20:13

i was about to suggest south beach instead of atkins, if you decide to go on a famous diets.
They do work. But however for long run, exercising and eating moderately is still the best. I know i lost 30kgs in one year before :p

  19. Dabido(Teflon), 18. September 2006, 22:00

Best of luck with it Suanie.
Give everything a try, make sure it’s Doctor Approved. Losing weight also helps with the exercise. It’s a lot easier to exercise once the weight is off. :-)

    GO SUAN! GO!
    YOU CAN DO IT!
    GO SUAN!
    STAY FOCUSED!
    GO SUAN GO!

Hope that is enough encouragement. I can copy and paste a dozen more times if it helps! :-)

Healthy does not equals losing weight. Atkins DOES makes you lose weight. But where does the weight comes from?
Base on what I read, high protein intake leads to fluid loss in your system. Water = weight too.

Eat moderate, exercise… set a longer but achievable target. In the long run, I believe it’s better

  21. Suertes, 18. September 2006, 22:58

That a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down.
The medicine go down, the medicine go down.
Just a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down.
    In a most delightful way.

  22. ShaolinTiger, 18. September 2006, 23:44

Atkins is very dangerous actually, indeed losing weight isn’t necerssarily good, lose fat, not mass. Atkins is good for rapid weight loss for very fat people, but for most people it’s not really healthy and it doesn’t work for the long term, it’s a quick fix.

The best thing is eating at regular intervals, same time every day so your metabolism can get used to utilising the energy properly, not sleeping right after you eat, not starving yourself and binging, regular exercise and eating in moderation, that’s the best way to lose weight.

All these fad diets are bullshit.
