stop the damn nukes!

Criminalise War, Stop World War 4 Logo

I didn’t realise that there was a World War 3, until the banner of the Perdana Global Peace Forum screamed ‘Criminalise War — Stop World War IV‘. Eh? I am always the last to know.

Which may be a good thing because according to the speakers at the forum, we are all doomed to die a most horrible death, unless someone bitch slap that war-waging Bu$h and haul his sorry ass to rot on the deserted island of Repentance.

In case it isn’t obvious enough to you, I spent most of my productive hours yesterday at Putrajaya attending the second day of the Perdana Global Peace Forum 2006 because… uh, TV Smith asked if I’d be interested to go.

Several other bloggers were invited to the closed-door panel session and we had to register at the event and a hot chick handed to us media tags… Neat!

Perdana Global Peace Forum 2006 - Registering

There were 5 panellists — Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad (a man who needs no introduction, at least in Malaysia so I’m not even going to start), Dennis Halliday (important Irish, ex-UN Assistant Secretary General), Professor Francis A. Boyle (important American whose experience in law is at level infinity), Dr. Helen Caldicott (important Aussie who doesn’t really like the current Oz administration or any other government administration for that matter, founder and president of the Nuclear Policy Research Institute), Hans Von Sponeck (important German, ex-UN Assistant Secretary General) and Professor Michel Chossudovsky (important Canadian economist, active member of the anti-war movement in his home country). Dato’ Mukhriz Mahathir (businessman and youngest son of Tun Dr. Mahathir) moderated the session.

The Tun started off by stating that war is about killing people, period. He mentioned the Japanese occupation in Malaysia and that he lived through its horrors, hence the reason he feels so strongly against war. Dude, I totally know what you mean. My own grandparents survived the war, not without their own terrible stories from nightmarish experiences which I managed to extract out of my reluctant grandmother not so long ago. Suffice to say, it was a horrible, horrible unstable time.

Perdana Global Peace Forum 2006 - stage

True, I found it a tad ironic for the Tun to be talking about peace. It is sort of a running-joke among Malaysians — even when they had the first Perdana Global Peace forum last year, we were beside ourselves giggling (go search for archived blog posts and comments from other people if you so wish). It is indeed difficult to separate home from international affairs especially when the former struck us so hard and deep for 22 years.

But separate we must. If the threat of nuclear power-play is carried out just to let the world know who has the biggest dick, we ALL suffer. Your who’s-got-this-AP, why-Proton-in-the-first-place (and the rest of the 22 Questions) would be so insignificant that you seriously wouldn’t give a shit at the end.

So all the speakers talked about how illegal, unfounded and unjust it would be to strike Iran (all because of oil, other reasons they give are flukes). They gave very nice speeches…

Edited 24 June: Unfortunately I lost a couple of paragraphs from here onwards because my WP editing is a bit fucked up. Below is an image of what I thought when one of the speakers mentioned several countries having their nukes already targeted at Iran…

Perdana Global Peace Forum 2006 - nuking Iran?

I mentioned that Dr. Caldicott gave a strong, stirring speech on how the war in Iran WILL affect us here in Malaysia, and it is not an ‘other people’s problem’ as we may have thought it is. Thankfully FA found it acceptable to quote from my now-lost paragraph, and this was what it was:

… You see, the nuclear bombs that they are planning to wipe out Iran with – they are REALLY huge; heavier and more massive than the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombs. Something about depleted uranium, the flow of the wind, hazardous effects! Translated, Malaysia is downwind from Iran and we WILL receive the hazardous air that contains all the bad bad particles that WILL contaminate OUR air, water and food. Kids developing cancer at 3, ALL your babies born without skulls and other important limbs and organs! Getting fucked for no reason does not even begin to describe it.

And below is an excerpt from the movie ‘Team America’ on what I think of the UN’s effectiveness.

Kim Jong Il: Hans Brix? Oh no! Oh, herro. Great to see you again, Hans!
Hans Blix: Mr. Il, I was supposed to be allowed to inspect your palace today, but your guards won’t let me enter certain areas.
Kim Jong Il: Hans, Hans, Hans! We’ve been frew this a dozen times. I don’t have any weapons of mass destwuction, OK Hans?
Hans Blix: Then let me look around, so I can ease the UN’s collective mind. I’m sorry, but the UN must be firm with you. Let me in, or else.
Kim Jong Il: Or else what?
Hans Blix: Or else we will be very angry with you… and we will write you a letter, telling you how angry we are.

Professor Francis A. Boyle talked a little about international laws. During the Q&A session, a hot chick said something that I was thinking of all along…. “erm international law didn’t really work…” When America invaded Iraq, did they give two hoots about international laws? Every other country admonished them that the move was illegal, but Iraq is still fucked today, isn’t it? You can’t stop someone from doing what they have been meticulously planning to do all along, within their jurisdiction or not. Greed knows no bounds and I think we are all slowly becoming aware of what else could happen, and to whom it could happen to. By the looks of things, it could and would happen to me and you.

Pok Ku says that no matter what else you believe, who else you support, you have every reason to be afraid. In his own words,

[…] I am scared of the Coming Nuclear Wars. I am scared stiff of the fate that might befall my children and my grandchildren […]

[…] no matter what political affiliation you have or, what religion you belong to, be very very scared. Whether you are an UMNO member, an MCA member , a Gerakan member or DAP member, you will be affected by WW4.[…]

And this is the important question, ‘what can you do?” Bearing in mind that I am but the least of all insignificant minions at the pitiful mercy of those far more powerful than me, not much. I can’t stop Bush and his friends. Hell, I am far from being eligible to vote in the US elections. I do not have important friends within my network, unlike Datuk Paduka Marina Mahathir.

Perdana Global Peace Forum 2006 - Datuk Paduka Marina Mahathir with Suanie

(even then I don’t think she is capable of physically stopping Bush).

Nukes used to be used as the last resort. Today it is but a natural part of the war-mongering states’ tactical plans. Since when has it been acceptable to kill by the millions, endangering other millions AND mother nature because the neo-conservatives can’t wait to get their dirty grubby hands on other people’s oil? Add this with “We are afraid you would eventually bomb us, hence we are striking you first”, “Your country is not democratic enough, so we are here to make you do things the way we did back home”. Perhaps I am not putting this succinctly enough, nor am I capable of asking more in-depth questions complete with further analysis and research, but at its superficial level, I don’t think that this is right, and that is how I feel. I don’t think it is right to subject civilians to the horrors of the before, during and aftermath of war as they are facing now in Iraq, their children maimed and doomed before they are given a chance to live. I don’t think it is right for 18 year old American soldiers to be risking their lives in a senseless war while their families are glued to the televisions for any news at all. Misplaced patriotism to leaders who infuse them with wayward information via a biased media network.

I don’t think using nukes as war weapons is right at all.

Who cares what I think, right? If YOU think the same, if YOU have to power to elect your leader, PLEASE elect someone who thinks the same as YOU do. Please inform your friends, your family that the threat is very real and may be very near.

‘I didn’t realise that there was a World War 3’

    Take Your Pick
    The Dr Who One

    The Wrestling One

    The Tele-Movie one [or mini-series … I forget]

    The Other Tele-Movie

    Or my personal Favourite:
    Whoops Apocalypse

I could include ‘On the Beach’ and ‘Fail Safe’ ‘Dr StrangeLOve’ et al … but the list is endless. Surprised you didn’t know of those documentaries. 🙂

Also, World War Four is also a band that played around Sydney … so there has been at least one of those already as well! 🙂

‘important Aussie who doesn’t really like the current Oz administration’

We have no administration … only puppets!

‘The Tun started off by stating that war is about killing people, period.’

Well, he got that wrong. Send him a copy of Vom Kreig by Clauswitz.

‘… strike Iran (all because of oil, …’

And, my point is proven! It’s not about killing people. 🙂 War is about getting what you want when you can’t be bothered to use diplomacy. [Though Clausewitz said it was when diplomacy fails … but the US doesn’t even bother trying Diplomacy now adays].

    ‘MY relationship,’

    Eh? When that happen? 🙂

‘The U.N. was already rendered useless when they allowed any ONE country to have veto power (there are 5).’

Not quite. The UN became useless when they allowed the US to bully people like Hans Blix into manipulating reports to make it look like Iraq had weapons of mass destructions etc.
As Hans said afterwards, there was no evidence, but the US threatened them to make it look like there was.

If the UN had of collectively stood up against Bush, then the war wouldn’t have happened. After all, Germany and France had a plan which would have worked without a war … the Veto powers really didn’t come into it. Their plans problem was, the oil wouldn’t have gone to the US, it would have continued to flow to Europe.

BUT … it’s even more complex than that … not enough space to explain it all.

‘When America invaded Iraq, did they give two hoots about international laws?’

International law may still work. Remember, it is still possible for Bush, Blair and Howard (and anyone else who went to war against the UN’s better judgement) to be hauled into The Hague and face judgement.

I doubt Bush and his friends will ever have that problem though, as the US has an attitude that their President is above such things … but, you never know. They did impeach Nixon, so there is still a possibility that US Citizens will start to question why it is that they’re boys are dying to make Bush and his friends Uber-rich.

After all, the reason given for the war, of changing the Iraq Government from Saddam to aDemocracy, is still illegal under international law. The WMD thing has already been proven to have been an excuse that they knew to be false.

    ‘HEED ME, YE LOT!!!!!!!’

Alas, I feel you are preaching to the converted!

‘Nukes used to be used as the last resort.’

Well, they’ve only been used in one war … and it wasn’t as a last resort when you think about it, Japan was already losing and on it’s last leg.

It is good to note though, that the people who developed the nukes didn’t think it would be used against civilians. They thought the first one was going to be used to blow the top off Mount Fuji as an example (and to humiliate the Japanese Government with the loss of Japans greatest landmark).

It’s still possible to just aim nukes at military targets with little civilian losses … but, to some, life is cheap.

How much of the conference involved discussing ways to ensure Iran didn’t develop an atomic bomb? After all, if there is 100% proof Iran isn’t developing a bomb, then it removes all excuses for nuking them. Someone has to use diplomacy in intervene on both sides of this equation.

It’s okay to point the finger at Bush and the US for their obvious war mongering and oil lust, but things have to be put in perspective as well. Things need to be in place to prove 100% that Iran isn’t trying to become a nuclear player. If Iran continues to play dumb and not allow the UN to ensure it’s not making Nuclear weapons, then we’re going to have fear building up on both sides.

After all, if the UN can categorically prove that Iran isn’t in the nuclear arms race, it removes all excuses for the US to attack them and take their oil.

    Suanie:
Of course there isn’t proof, what I gleaned was that Iran had a right just about as anyone to defend themselves, and if that means developing atomic bombs… though Dr. Caldicott sort of said that they weren’t, of course I can’t prove to you or anyone that it is true or otherwise. Apparently Iran is rather scared atm, according to the Tun during the press conference held later, I don’t know why they are scared as in, they are scared because they have no equal means to strike back, or they are scared of the coming war that would break their country or etc.

But that’s how all the problems start. I build something for defensive purpose, you see that I am building something so strong and you feel that you have a right to build the same thing (which you do, equal, really) and everyone else starts to do the same thing, and everyone gets scared because damn, the weapon built for defense may well be used for pre-emptive attack, it’s a vicious psychological cycle. but what i am saying is really superficial and elementary, as you would know that there are other twists and turns to the issues at hand.

will see how it goes. i know i’m preaching to the converted, but maybe they would have other friends who are not so convinced and they speak to them bla bla etc etc cycle cycle round round ball ball. my main purpose is to raise this awareness that we are going to be fucked sooner or later if the nuke games continues. everybody sort of knows it within their hearts, yes it’s bad, we are going to be effed, but i don’t know if they realise how bad.

  11. ShadowFox says

Stop the damn nukes ? How about stop desecrating the Hindu temples in our own backyard first ?

    Suanie:
because if the nukes aren’t stopped, there won’t be temples of any kind.

actually the temples will still be there. just no devotees. all die mah.

or the surviving ones will flock to the temples and pray for a miracle.. hmm you are right. i take care of the nukes, you take care of the temples, k.

  12. ShadowFox says

But you conveniently left out the threat of nukes from Iran to another country, Israel.

I don’t doubt Bush is an imbecile, but I cannot sit by and let nukes get into the hands of terrorists from Iran who has publicly declared nuclear hostility to another country.

Malaysia is full of hypocrisy. Clean up own backyard first.

I am all for first strike against Iran’s nuclear capabilities.

Malaysia is supporting Iran simply because of their religious connections.

It is funny to see Malaysia the hypocrite accusing others of hypocrisy.

    Suanie:
But I don’t view Israel as having a real voice of their own than that of the US. If you’d believe this guy, it’s a set of misconceptions.

It is funny to see religion being used as an excuse not to save your own ass in the face of humanity destruction.

  13. ShadowFox says

If Uncle Sam is to go ahead with the war, there’s NOTHING you OR me can do anything about it.

The war will go on and nobody can stop it.

We cannot even INFLUENCE what goes on in our own backyard, I seriously doubt we can make a dent in the international arena.

What use is beating a dead horse ?

Instead, we should be focusing attention on cleaning up our own backyard and prepare for the aftermath of ww4.

Malaysian’s are not even united against injustice in our homeland, and here we are, trying to teach/educate the other super powers about moral values that we are devoid of domestically.

Malaysia has NO bargaining chip with the super powers.

    Suanie:
oh ok. excuse me while I continue flogging the dead horse. you go flog your horse too.

In order for me to believe this is happenning actuality, I need 2 people to voice support of this peace forum. Michael Moore and John Kerry. In video. Moore is a liberal but he’s support would mean that whoever watches his movie would likely support this forum. John Kerry is the man who garner the 2nd highest vote in history of America but he lost to Bush. SAme rule applies to John Kerry. then would I support.

    Suanie:
unfortunately it IS happening, with or without the supports of MM and JK. I don’t know if things would have been any different under JK, there are other people’s interests in this besides the president himself. it is easy to latch on to bush because he is quite the monkey, but there are layers and layers of other ppl in it as well who are motivated by power and money.

    so you wait la.. har?

  19. ShodowFox makes a great point. Once a while it is “nice” to stir the mind, go off tangent and dwell on topics like this. But we have to take care of some pressing issues first, like our own shit before talking about the US.
Yes, the overall image of a nuclear fallout is not a pretty sight BUT it literally takes two to tango.

Do you really think that the United States will give a damn of what the outcome of these discussions?
They are driven by the economics and politics in the White House and not some gathering of retired so called “important people” in Putrajaya.

So lets be real and clean up our own mess or if you prefer, just keep on bloggin!

    Suanie:
he might not believe it based on his strong… erm feelings, but i do understand where he’s coming from — taking care of our business before shooting off elsewhere. but i don’t think we should dump everything else in view of our domestic concerns. it is like saying, our local football team suck, we are never going to make it to the world cup, there shouldn’t be any screenings of world cup matches on telly because we can’t even train our homeboys to rise to international levels, so we shouldn’t bother with the performances of england and argentina and what not.

of course i am not naive enough to believe that the white house is going to give two flying hoots about some retirees. boyle however is still trying to impeach bush, i don’t know how successful that would be, but what are you doing?

the forum i attended on wednesday was attended by mostly ngos. the purpose of the forum on that day was to inform the ngos of this threat and that if they feel about this issue afterwards, they could do something about it. they have friends, their network around the world is rather powerful and if more awareness is raised, more information is disseminated then people could choose to elect a leader who do respect international laws, thus making it work.

this is not going to be an overnight process. it will take years, decades but someone’s got to start it somewhere.

  20. Hey Dr M. is looking good. I expect him to have shrivelled up by now…

But don’t forget that freak Ann Coultier, she would be so-bad-its-good entertainment if she’s on the campaign.

Maybe all we need is Oprah and Tom Cruise’s Scientology fleet to save us from WW4.

And no, I don’t support Bush and Co.’s nuclear war(if there’s one in the first place), but I get the jitters when I think that Iran is going to push the red button first. Hello, North Korea!!

    Suanie:
or mawi. mawi can save us all

  24. a-non-e-mouse says

are china and korea by any chance down wind from iran?

if yes, maybe i will give my buddies there a call… the kim dude and the chong/lee/tan dude… and get them to kick some USAss.

if that fails, we can always go back to your pathetic plan of having forums and writing blogs that will not do anything to change whether or not war will happen. heck if even UN couldnt stop it… what does suanie.net expect to do about it?

oh and we can also print stickers and flyers… then maybe if one reaches bush he will read it and break down in tears and realise the mistakes he has made and finally repent!

    Suanie:
Oh i remember you. welcome back yet again. i wonder why.

  29. Dabido(Teflon) says

Yeah, the point I was trying to make, is if Iran wants to avoid a war, it’ll need to use the UN to prove it is not making nukes. I don’t believe Dr Caldicott any more than I believe Bush regarding whether Iran are making them or not. I’d rather the UN have people on the ground.

History often makes people paranoid as well. After all, Hitler got around the German problem of not being able to build weapons by havin Sewing machine factories as fronts for Meschersmitt factories and stuff.

If Iran at least allows UN inspectors in to prove it’s being a good boy, it cancels any excuse the US can think of for going for it’s oil. The error Iraq made, was it thumbed it’s noses at the international community and made itself look more guilty than it was.
North Korea is making the same mistake.

So, Iran let’s UN inspectors in, proves they’re not making anything and Bush and friends will have to find other excuses … the more excuses they make and the mroe Iran shoots down, the more Bush look slike a turkey.

Like you said, the viscious circle of nukes has to end somewhere. We’re trying to disarm the world of nukes, not allow other nations to build them in the name of ‘defence’. Therefore, Iran, Nth Korea, etc etc should get on the ‘No Nukes’ band wagon, and try to get everyone else to disarm (including the US).
After all, what does the US have to fear? They have the largest best equiped Defence Force in the world. It takes the next thirteen Defence Forces in the world just to equal them. Most of those Defense Forces are US allies anyway!!!

So … where is the US fear coming from? The US Propaganda department!

So, Iran has to disarm the US in the only way possible … by proving the US are lying and that they’re not developing nukes.

As for a nuclear war between the US and Iran … I doubt that will occur. The US has a large enough defence force to walk in there and do an Iraq … yeah, they’ll P*ss off more people in the world, but they can hold and control Iran in the same way they’ve screwed Iraq up.

On top of that, the US are using more and more robotic equipment. They have unmanned tanks in Iraq now doing the rounds. [They’re controlled by soldiers sitting in a nice compound somewhere].

I think we’re more likely to see a collpse of the US economy (it’s over 300 trillion dollars in debt at present). It’s starting wars in order to bolster up its economy by selling weapons to other nations. The stockmarket is over due for a large correction of sorts. That’s what the grab for oil is really about. Economy crashes … whoever controls the oil will control all nations with an oil based economy.

Remove the US excuse for attacking Iran … they can’t touch the oil … they can’t start a war without an outcry … they’ll have to look for other methods to prop up their wanning economy.

    Suanie:
    you’re hired 😛

  30. Wow!! Suanie, this is the longest reply that I had seen in your blog ever. You really feel a lot here.

Oh ya, I belief the picture with Tun is real. I too have a picture with him and he still gives the same post. Just standing the way he is as always and smiles.

  31. a-non-e-mouse says

Dabido(Teflon)- that is an interesting point. you speak sense. however, what if the unthinkable happens and the UN does find nuclear weapons in Iran?

I am pretty sure W will take that as a license to nuke the crap out of them, whether or not they get rid of it. see the damage they did to iraq after the UN declared it clean.. imagine what they will do to iran.

so, lets all get together and wear stickers saying no to war. W has stickerophobia. he will give in.

p/s- i have a secret crush on suanie… i just want her to notice me…

    Suanie:
    almost as believable as houdini

  32. wanted to go too, invitation at Jeff Ooi’s but canceled last minute, guess it was great? 🙂

    Suanie:
    it was educational

  33. Dabido(Teflon) says

a-non-e-mouse: Well, there are none yet. The rumour is Iran is trying to develop them. If they are, then they won’t let the UN in to look.

If there is eventually 100% proof of nuclear weapons in Iran, then a direct war would be stupid (so W would probably try that), as declaring war will give them a reason to sue them.

Diplomacy would be the best thing to do at that stage. Failing diplomacy, then a covert operation to disable and render the nukes harmless would be better than an all out war.

Even if they have them, as long as there is little chance of them using them, then they can sit there till the bombs rust and become useless.

After all, how many nuclear nations are there? India and Pakistan both have them. So, just because they end up developing them isn’t proof they will start using them left, right and centre!

But, it could bring on a new cold war. We survived the last cold war when USSR and USA were pointing as many weapons as possible at each other. So, having Iran pointing nukes this way won’t be much different.

Not that I propose being blaise about it either. After all, WWI was a huge stalemate for years as both sides built huge armies thinking they were deterants … only to find that the assassination of ArchDuke Ferdinand would be enough to have them all go to war.

So, if Iran has them, then Diplomacy is the way out.

Let’s face it, when a gunman takes hostages, they try to negotiate them out of the situation, they only go in guns blazing as a last resort.

BUT, best way to disarm the situation to begin with, is to assure the other side you’re not looking for an excuse to gun them down to begin with.

The USA can do this with diplomacy if they want … Iran can do it by allowing inspectors in to remove any doubt of their sincerity in NOT developing nukes.

  34. Dabido(Teflon) says

Oh Suan, I forgot to mention, please notice A-non-e-mouse. 😉

    Suanie:
the rodent is hard to miss

  35. Point taken, but I still don’t agree with the analogy of the local football team to event of such immensity.

So what was the outcome of the gathering? Was there a consolidated proposal drafted and a list of action items for the participants to follow-up? Will the group and its network attempt to have an audience with the US Senators and folks on the Hill?

  41. I don’t know if I’m getting this right, but it seems the entirety of the post – or rather, the forum – has been about *nuclear arms non-proliferation*. War encompasses far, far more than this. This forum sounds like – from this post, at least – it has an agenda, and that agenda is anti-American. Is *this* Mahathir’s version of “make peace, not war”?

(Honestly, just think about MAD (mutually assured destruction) for a moment. Yeah, we’re shown the terrors of a nuclear holocaust via movies like Wargames and Dr Strangelove (I just love this movie’s tagline), but can you imagine the number of wars *averted* because of MAD? There’s a very, very good reason why the US have termed post-nuclear conflicts “soft wars”.)

Of course, we could just let it all happen, because … well, we might need it [as per Futurama quote below]:

Fry: This snow is beautiful. I’m glad global warming never happened.

Leela: Actually it did. But thank God nuclear winter cancelled it out.

    🙂

I know I sound naive for believing it, BUT OMG TUN LEFT A COMMENT ON YOUR BLOG!!!!!!!!

  44. Tun Mahathir … kudos to him for putting us on the map but he should retire in peace. And leave the running of the country to the people in charge. Let us not forget that he must bear some blame for the state of our economy now (look at Singapore and learn).

  45. what’s with the template??

  46. Wow! Picture with the big guy himself. WOuld have loved to attend the forum. Unfortunately was in Kedah.

  47. How can you stand next to that big oaf!?? Credit to you Suanie your blog is interesting and well written, but the guy is just a a facist islamist, anti-western corrupt ignoramus, all his talk of peace ini, peace itu is just a thinly veiled attempt at supporting any other terrorist harbouring country. He is a bigot and an irrational racist and should step down from anything that smells like politics.

    Suanie:
but it\’s a great camwhoring photo, no?

[…] That is the safest distance for me from Toon. I pretty much despise the man for what he did to DSAI (whom I admire more than the Old Man) and for that I will never forgive Toon. Suanie may have taken a photo of Tun next to her, and I won’t begrudge her luck. I have the opportunity to do that too, but I didn’t do it. Why? Because I am not sure if I could control myself from pushing Toon down the stairs…. […]

  3. As Suanie Sees It - dude, where’s your blog? says:

[…] Despite my skeptical tendencies, I am actually an optimist at heart. There were considerable doubts regarding the effectiveness of a peace forum that I had previously blogged about. And a little further back, there was the issue of the Arab Square being built along Jln. Bkt. Bintang, sparking unofficial slogans of ‘Visit Malaysia. It’s Like You Never Left Home‘. How many people blogged about (and made fun of) it? How many others spoke up in the papers screaming for our Malaysian identity instead of a copy-and-paste project? The Arabic Square is still there, isn’t it? What are you going to do about it? Cry? Bleah. […]
