In that novel the White flower stood for purity/virginity etc (where the girl he bonked basically was frigid), and the red flower stood for PASSION and HOT HUMPING!!! (where that girl was more free and able to express herself sexually). Scarey that the imagery came back to me considering I read the novel in 1982! Waaah! ‘It was so bad that the next round, Paul decided to order three whisky coke at one go.’

Geees, that reminds me of DH Lawrences, ‘Sons and Lovers’ novel.
