afdlin shauki’s fuuyo takes home the cake
I asked for a CD of Fuuyo by Afdlin Shauki some time last week and it arrived yesterday.
I have not seen much of Afdlin Shauki’s works let alone know what he sounds like. Besides the last album by a Malay singer I bought was Siti Nurhaliza’s debut album. Yeah that was a mighty long time ago. And the recent development of Malaysia’s love for reality shows that produce not-so-commendable (in my opinion) singers are… high school efforts at best. Except for Jac, most of them do not reach graduate levels, no matter what POPULAR OPINION says. If you want to know more about the lameness of popular opinion, feel free to watch Malaysian Idol S2. That should give you some idea on why quality SHOULD preceed popularity because the aftermath can be scary.
Anyway…
The CD version I received is probably the limited version for it contains a VCD ‘The making of Fuuyo’, titled Angkasawan Yang Terlampau (bwahahahaha!!!). I haven’t have time to see it - then again the focus is on the CD. A booklet is included with the lyrics and credits. Tunggu apa lagi… main CD lah!
The opening short skit had me laughing my nuts head off and it set a relaxed mood for the rest of the album.
I was quite surprised by how much I like the album… there is always a pre-conceived thinking that the Malaysian music industry mainly focuses only on kampung rock groups, nasyid groups and teeny-bopper wannbes. That was my pre-conceived thinking anyway. In the credits, Afdlin said that this is an album about love. I say that this is an album about love, life and being different. I can feel that he really put his efforts and everything he has in this album; I feel as if I have a piece of Afdlin Shauki in my room.
Afdlin does not seem to have a very wide vocal range ala Siti/Jac etc and there are moments when I feel that he was straining… but his voice was pleasing and very soothing. He composed most of the songs and lyrics himself and based on his blog, I feel that he has been very honest in this album as well.
The lyrics… oh man…
In ‘Aku Lelaki’ for example,
Aku pergi sekolah tinggi
Ada diploma dan degree
Tapi nampak gadis lawa
Cair otak bak… bak.. bak… mentega
Like some roadside pantun you just make up there and then, right??? But the way he sang it + music etc was so funny… I was laughing all the way throughout this song!
Afdlin does some slow numbers as well, I like Bukan Cinta and Waras. As I have said, there are some straining moments but somehow his honest approach made me overlook all that. My favourite song in the album is probably Mangsa Keadaan, a good jazz attempt, funny and naughty as heck!
I tell you what I am going to do with this album: keep it, send in RM36.50 and wait for Afdlin & Hattan’s blues project : Mak Ok Jer!!
I would not have such an enjoyable experience if not for Afdlin Shauki’s blog.
Which led me to thinking…
This is a darn good way to publicise your album!!!
The risks are great but Afdlin decided to let the album speak for itself. And I tell you Afdlin, the album creamed SCREAMEDDDDD!!!

Madness pays off after all.

Afdlin Shauki lost his mind
He can be quite naughty, as can be seen in his show “Aha”. Sometimes his song lyrics are brilliant, fucking brilliant!
As long as he doesn’t sing:
She whispered to me
Aku cinta Kamu
What’s that in your pocket?
Is it a canoe?
I have a copyright on that one!

I thought this whole thing is a scam…you know…like our Malaysian version of the Nigerian scam. But you have proved it wrong. So, does that free offer implies to overseas also? I might want to request for one also.
Afdlin wrote that this offer is open for anyone in this world who wants to experience his album, so it’s extended to you. If you like it, then do send him whatever amount you think the album is worth, ya.
so you’d definitely recommend it?
hehe. want one to test also. if it’s that good, then afdlin is def. getting his worth back.
Afdlin Shauki was a big winner last night. I actually sat down and watched TV3’s Anugerah Skrin last night without knowing who was nominated for what. And Azwan Ali was the MC summore. But I stayed in my seat because Afdlin won the best screenplay fo…
